It does. Also, you can change the "target=" part to just "@".

If you are using your spirit beast during a raid, you can help out with tank healing by keeping the tank as your focus target and putting "/cast [@focus] Spirit Mend" somewhere in one of your shot macros so it always goes off.

Have you tested this today? Yesterday my flaming boar was leveling quickly like yours, but today my oil-stained wolf got one bubble (roughly 15%) from one full heroic run.

I noticed leveling my pet in heroics on my lvl80 took FOREVER like you mentioned. But on my lvl55 hunter in WHU, I was in an UBRS/LBRS pug leveling my newly aquired Lone Hunter with sword intact, and it leveled from 52 to 55 in one instance run. Unsure why there is a difference here.
