My answer is extremely biased, but I'd stick to traditional art first. Having good base skills in raw media is the key to good art, regardless of whether it is digital or not!

Nope, and I'm aware of how real life snakes function! I swear the model used to have it's long fangs exposed all the time, like the current picture up on the Petopia site for the Sunburst Adder. Now the head seems to have been changed, though I could well be wrong!
