Re: PetEmote Addon - New Patch Zip File! 9/11/10

Thank you for contacting me and asking for help. And – even more important – thank you all for your interest in PetEmote. At least there seems to be a grow(l)ing community around it.
Teigan, as far as I can see, you did a great job here.

First, let me introduce myself, to clear up all mystery.

I created this addon in 2007, as far as I remember, to have a quick way of typing typical /me-emotes for my pet. Then I found a way to hook into the chat text and got the pet's name to be the first word of the emote. (This is still a bit tricky – that's why PetEmote causes conflicts with some other addons.) I added more features, so as the here debated random emotes.
By the way, did anyone notice, that you can type any emote using the /pet command? Sometimes i think that this original idea is completely forgotten.

So, I had to take a break for the last 13 months or so, but as you read on my blog, I'm still alive. I was thinking about what to do with PetEmote, and all I know by now is that I want to keep it working. I don't know, if there will be any trailblazing new features, but I want it to work with future versions of WoW.
You want to make your great work here available to more players. I like this idea as much as I like your emotes and I see this is going into the direction for which it was originally intended. Unfortunately, I did not get too much feedback in the official forums, back then when I asked. The better emotes that you got with the addon are some results of previous responses.
To get to the point: Why not include your emotes into the PetEmote core? I have to update for some other reasons, so I can replace the existing emotes with the much better ones you worked out here.
I'm not a fan of Curse, because of the time-consuming interface. I closed the PetEmote page on curse long ago and i stick to this decision. I remember one more reason, which I did not describe: the Curse admins don't like my uploads anymore, since the editor is on board (exe baaaaad). I think this is not a problem, since PetEmote can be found easily using any search engine.
However, please feel free to publish your changes on Curse, if you like. It's open source anyway.

***
Last but not least, I need some feedback on the following problem that a player told me some weeks ago.
Since Blizzard added its own /pet command, which was totally unnecessary in my eyes, there seem to be problems on some clients. Can anyone here confirm this? I can't, that's the problem... If you could just type something like "/pet loves its master." and see if that works, this would be very helpful.
Maybe (and I hope I'm wrong) I will have to change the command into something else, to not override the useless emote Blizzard gave us. Here are some suggestions. PetEmote can have all or only one of them. What do you think? Do you know any other addon, that uses one of these commands?
Code: Select all
/pe – like "pet emote"
/pme – like "pet me"
/pm – ditto, but shorter

Wow. *sits and listens* I did notice the /pet thing. XD I loved it cause hilarity ensues.
I think Teigan and all of us here at Petopia would LOVE to have these custom emotes put into the core and updated regularly via Curse.com. :3
Yes, the /pet command only activates the PetEmote, and cancels out the actual Blizzard /pet command.
Far as I'm aware, none of those are taken. I do like /PE since its easy to remember. :3 If all else fails, I think /petem would work too.

The /pet hasn't given me any trouble, but I'm not sure for others. The reason we were thinking about putting an updated version on Curse was that it would be a bit easier to install the addon, and you seemed to have abandoned it. That no longer being the case, however, I see no need to do that anymore. :P
Also, glad you like Teigs emotes as much as we do! :D

For the feedback, I like the /pe command you suggested. I think it's easy to remember as Pet Emote = PE. It's true that trying to use Blizzard's /pet default emote doesn't work if you have PetEmote installed since the addon assumes you're trying to write a custom emote there.

I would love it! (Even if I only wrote one spiritbeast emote...)Teigan wrote:I would guess they wouldn't mind being included though! :D

Saturo: you gave the SBs more life. Trust me. Loque wows EVERYONE he comes in contact with.
I do think raptors need some more emotes. Maybe like...
"...spots a critter and darts after it with incredible agility."
"...growls affectionately towards his mistress/master."
"...nips his master/mistress playfully."
"...snarls ferociously at (unfriendly target) before lunging."

Also, maybe another.
"...glances to (unfriendly or friendly target) and sticks his snout in the air, feeling he/she is superior."

I did not yet read all 12 pages here, but I will try to in the next days. I noticed the problems with Spirit Beasts and will think about it.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask whatever you like.

Re: PetEmote Addon - New Patch Zip File! 9/11/10

I'd be thrilled to have my silliness included in the core files - it's a great honor to be able to contribute!
As a few of the Petopians know, I was readily making use of the "pet <emote>" option, and in fact, a bunch of the new corehound/bear emotes came from that.

<3
(Regarding the other discussion and raptors, I would giggle if there were emotes referring to them opening doors and/or poking their head out of some nearby bushes.)
