Are Hyenas still hunched back?
For those who do not know what I am referring to, Hyenas used to have this stance:
http://www.wow-petopia.com/look/hyenaskinblack.html
I remember a while ago, they suddenly looked deformed, like so (and still have this very stupid looking stance):
http://www.wowhead.com/npc=4127#modelviewer
I have yet to understand why Blizzard would suddenly have them hols their heads and neck at such an odd angle.

I never paid enough attention to Hyenas back when they had the original posture, however I do admit I like the hunched stance more. I know there's some model issues with the new pose, but they've never been enough to bother me. I really like the look when they walk around with the head down, just gives off a good attitude.

I hate it. Hyenas in real life do not hold their head down like that, and it's bugged me enough that I abandoned my Hyena when it happened and refuse to tame one until they look like they did.
I guess you can call it a pet peeve of mine

I never saw them before, I don't think. However, I honestly think they look fine now.

Yeah, it all comes down to personal preference.
*shrug* I know real hyenas don't necessarily walk like that, but as I said above I really like the demeanor it brings.

Ohhh! At first I didn't see what you were talking about but now i do.
Maybe they wanted them to look more menacing?
I actually liked hyenas when I first started playing, I remember i even tamed one on my first hunter but "released" it soon after because something seemed a bit off with me..
While I know they don't really hold their heads down in constantly real life I do think it seems a bit more fitting from what I have seen on google images....
Wait a second.. did they always have the wolf animations?

I really like the hunched look as well. Makes the hyenas and the gnolls seem a little more similar too.

Cmon, there has to be someone who remembers how they wewre, and like it better besides me

Wut?
Re: Are Hyenas still hunched back?
I also preferred hyenas when they had their head-up stance. My pet from 30-60 was a red hyena, but when they changed the model I just didn't like it anymore.

Re: Are Hyenas still hunched back?
I kinda like the new look better... although they can carry themselves in a more upright/doglike posture, hyenas tend to adopt a "hunched back" stance especially when fighting - the point is to cover their vulnerable achilles tendons by keeping their hindquarters tucked low to the ground (also, hyenas are supposed to look ugly... and brutal);

Re: Are Hyenas still hunched back?
I've never liked hyenas. Their model is ugly, and their textures are far too low-res for me to be able to stand for any extended period of time. That said, I much preferred the old look.
I also exist on DeviantArt.

I agree.. this is one of the glaringly low-res pets. *begs blizz for new higher resolution textures*Saturo wrote:I've never liked hyenas. Their model is ugly, and their textures are far too low-res for me to be able to stand for any extended period of time. That said, I much preferred the old look.

I don't know what hyenas you've been looking at, but I've never seen one that I thought was ugly. They're pretty adorable, even if they are vicious.
I also preferred the old model, and wish Blizzard would re-implement it. If my pet is idling beside me, it shouldn't be in attack-mode 24/7. I suppose my biggest problem with the new model, though, is like the changes to the bear model, it's very obvious that it wasn't designed to bear the edits. The result just looks really awkward.
And, yes. Hyenas have always borrowed from the wolf animations.

Along with the cats, minus the riding tiger model.lovcat wrote:I agree.. this is one of the glaringly low-res pets. *begs blizz for new higher resolution textures*Saturo wrote:I've never liked hyenas. Re: Are Hyenas still hunched back?
Ah. Ok. Thought they downgraded for a moment.. its probably the head position which threw me off.Kryte wrote: And, yes. Hyenas have always borrowed from the wolf animations.
I'm a cat person IRL and it makes me feel like a traitor that I don't have a cat in game 'cause I'm not really interested in the cat models. I think think the only one I really like is the lion model and that is barely better than the others.Tulune wrote: Along with the cats, minus the riding tiger model.
Re: Are Hyenas still hunched back?
Hyenas use the same base model as wolves, including all the same animations. Wolves have their heads down, so when hyenas had their head up it caused a lot of odd animation problems. For example, their idle scratching animation just scratched at the air, not at their head. Blizzard probably gave hyenas the hunched down look to fix these animation problems.
A few animations on hyenas have the head up still, and you can see how odd they look with the head up. In the model viewer make a hyena sleep and they still sleep with the head up in the air!

A rare visitor to this forum now that I don't play WoW anymore, but forever a Petopian.

Same, except the red lynx is the one I like in-game...lovcat wrote:I'm a cat person IRL and it makes me feel like a traitor that I don't have a cat in game 'cause I'm not really interested in the cat models. They do actually hold their heads down a lot. I watch animal planet safari stuff all the time and more often than now, their heads are down cause thats where the food is.
