Have not heard of that, but I'm also deeply enamored with Hyperbole and a Half. x)

You hit the nail on the head, Vel. It's fun discussing various factors and possibilities, but ultimately it comes down to the fact that they want most of their female races to be sexually appealing.

Sex sells. If it were more "accurate" the Tauren females would have no waist and an udder instead of breasts. Really, if it were "accurate", the Tauren would walk on all fours, not talk, be raised for food, there would be no Trolls, Elves or anything else. Just humans. And there would be no magic. It's a fantasy world (though I DO take issue with some of the animals now and then) and sex sells. Some of the females are quite pleasant to look at. This helps the game sell.

(My real big fuss with WoW right now is that gnolls are not led by the females of the species, and the males are the biggest, nastiest ones around. I'd have died happy if Hogger were female.)

He could be. Has anyone gotten close enough to check?

I wasn't even aware there was a difference....I thought all the gnolls I've seen in-game up to date were male XP

I'm sure there are a few bizarre cases of THAT, too, in the game. With the exception of a few rare, special races (like harpies, which were intentionally all female), it seems like a few enemy mobs you can run into are entirely one gender or the other. Which is a little....unusual...

Actually, if we're going with... uh... accurate hyena anatomy being true with gnolls, you'd have to get VERY close and personal to learn their gender. Outside, there is extremely little difference between spotted hyena genders... To the point where females have *coughs nervously* a pseudo penis and little fatty sacks that resemble testies.

Hogger probably is female, and just hasn't told anyone about it yet.

.... I watch a lot of animal doccumentaries okay?

I can explain one gender or another theory.

Look. You are a species where the higher and stronger beings see you as a threat. So they kill you. The males go out to protect their wives and children, and the wives and children remain safe so their species can continue. If you wipe out the males, there's going to be a heck of a lot of...bad things, but it is survival. They protect their precious possessions, their mates and children, hence why most mobs are male.

Except most of these mob species actively hunt, hassle and harass the Player Species, according to quest and lore, and have for x amount of generations, Since Anyone Can Remember. Gnolls are said to be so stupid they fight over who's shadow is bigger. 9____6

Sexual dimorphism happens in WoW because in all other species, they kill eachother if they look alike so CLEARLY sexual dimorphism = survival!

Really if you want to see more realistic approach to trolls look no farther then eq and eq2. All so to all those stating fantasy over reality - we connect to these games and stories because there is a thread of realism to them - if there wasn't then we wouldn't be interested in their stories and their fake lives. It helps us relate to them because while they may not exist in reality they have a semblance to us and our reality. If it didn't really matter that they look real then they wouldn't have a humanoid appearance or their would be races that are playable that are completely inhuman looking. I have yet to find an mmo or rpg that allows you to play something that is not human looking except maybe rifts. (after reading what I have in this post just want say not trying to be on the attack here. I just hate when people say its fantasy with out really digging in to why we all like to play it)

I sure hope they don't keep the female taurens like that. I like the older better, plus I think they should look cuter than uglier. Cows are cute compared to bulls irl. If they were to make the female taurens look more like the males, they might as well have only one gender for the tauren. When I made my very first hunter, which was a female tauren, I eventually got used to her because her face looked very realistic and feminine.

Always wondered about this. If you're going to go through all the hassle of editing the male tauren head/face to begin with to make a bison species, why not do the same for female tauren-to-taunka too?
Especially after having gone to the trouble of making proper female vikings to go along with the men, you'd think slappin a new head on an existing model would of been a easy solution.

I've always thought it was awesome that they actually did that for the vikings, after years and years mostly one sided genders in mobs they went and gave us both.

Just random...

I think the only reason the males have a slouch at all is their tusks. Their tusks are quite large and heavy while a female barely has any usually or their tusks are just tiny. If the helps anyway, for the 'omg why dont females slouch like males' arguement. Well theres a perfect explanation right there.
