The bad swimmers -
everything else
Anything that flies with flapping wings is right out, they can't seem to tell the difference between air and drowning. Most of the wolves and all of the hyenas swim like they're walking, and the cats all swim like their head is a balloon. Bears are ok, and I guess that's because druids need to swim too.
You forgot wind serpents!!! They have fantastic swimming animations.
Edit: Spiders are entertaining swimmers as well. They don't look quite as graceful, but it's still interesting to look at. (No, I'm not biased at all, why do you ask? )

For my main, I dunno what I'm gonna pick for leveling. I could stick with my favorite Devilsaur. Or I could use a (lovely) Spirit Beast (Loque'nahak) for healing/being a healer. I can't/haven't decided it. It's a big decision for me! For a "baby" Worgen that I am gonna level, I dunno. In Wrath of the Lich King, I pretty much leveled up with my Devilsaur I think. I love pets, especially the Exotic pets. I always have been and always will be a Beast Master.
Robot Wars is renewed for 6 episodes! I love some Exotic pets! And I hate spiders for.. "pets"!
I, for one, will be alternating. How could you NOT try out various pets as you level?! But mainly, I'll be going with:
Loque/Skoll: For the heal (and I do love starvingcat's roars!)
King Krush: Because I love him <3
Gezzarak: Because she's awesome, can't wait to get her!
Dark Gray/Green SMV Felboar: Same reason as above ^^
I intend to get a wolf back, probably white worg, plus Snarler and the Ramparts wolf; I'm also going to be getting some variety of blue fox.
This is all IF I buy Cataclysm, though. I'm really depressed with the direction BM's taking atm (burstlol), and my other main, fire PvP mage, lost his awesome knockback, so I'm iffy atm.
I'm actually not going to alternate... Well not really. I'm going to keep my Wolf, Silverstream and my cat Shadowflame on me at all times, but I may end up just questing with Shadow, unless I need a tenacity pet to tank something. Shadow's been with me all the way to 60, 70 and 80. Been with me through thick and thin so he's gonna be by my side when I ding 85. ;3 I'll keep other pets on me in cause I need to switch him out for something.

Amphibians are the frogs and salamander families; they get the neato ability to metamorphose as they grow, and some of them can breathe through their skin. Also, most of them need a way to keep their skin damp, and a pond in which to lay their eggs.
Reptiles are the snakes, lizards, crocs, and dragon families. They lay eggs in nests, look basically the same as a newborn and as an adult, and breathe air. They also have scaly or pebbly skin, and they can survive in a desert area without drying out like their froggy cousins.

I might end up going back to my "roots" persay and use my first true Hunter pet where I clicked straight off. It'd be my Ghost Saber. However, I'm betting all my pre-Cata pets will be getting some leveling love, especially ones like my Bat since I love him dearly but he's not truly useful in a PvE sense. :[ His stun will be fun to level with again though.
So, probably in order of use: My Ghost Saber, Bat, Wintersaber, Devilsaur, Wolf. My Wolf got too much love during Wrath, as did my Devilsaur, as much as I love them both to death they need to share in the love.

For solo'ing in cata, in general I will probably lean more towards cunning and away from tenacity (except for the occasional tough encounter); dash and carrion feeder are good ones for trash grinding and I'll also be sure to take advantage of the ones with AOE; for myself (male orc) that will be Man o' War the sporebat, and Nuramoc / Nightmare for my male night elf.

Anyways, I guess I'll be leveling with either my Loque, since I love him and he's the pet I use most if the time, or my Humar since he's the one I've had for the longest time, since lvl 30-ish.
Maybe, just maybe, I'll be getting my Snow leopard back and level with it, just to get the feel of the good ole days, since that was my very first pet. I ran all the way from Bloodmyst isles, through Wetlands (as you had to do back then) to get one, and I guess that's when my "I-want-rare-looking-pets" began
I plan on switching between as many pets as possible while leveling But ones that I'll probably try to keep near my level are my worm, cat, and beetle.
For my Night Elf huntress:
Etona, back in vanilla (when the quest to spawn Shy-Rotam was Horde-only), raced to L57 to tame Rak'shiri. Gosh, I remember hitting L50 and doing every quest I could possibly solo for days on end to reach L57. I was completely obsessed! When the moment finally came, I could barely contain my excitement on the flightpath to Winterspring. I had gotten two cold Cokes, a salad, and a bag of chips to pull an all-nighter camp of the rare cat.
To my sheer amazement and utter delight, Rak'shiri was already waiting patiently for dear Etona. I quickly tamed him, and he has been her main pet for everything and every spec for years. He was renamed Krichevskoy.
That said, Kriv will prowl beside Etona into the wild new Azeroth, his slanted eyes as wide as hers, his loyal heart beating as fiercely as hers to see the new changes and greet new friends and old allies once more.
For my Troll huntress (also back in Vanilla):
Ikult, as a young huntress, read of a rare white bat that flapped near the Undercity's imposing walls. Daunted by the Forsaken's lands, but determined to make her first great Hunt, she set out to find and tame this savage beast. But she was sorely disappointed after laying in wait for many hours, and she finally turned to leave- and one of the common red and violet bats peeked out at her from around a tree. Thinking she shouldn't go home empty-handed, she tamed the curious bat, named him Muche, and hearthed home; thinking only of her apparent loss.
Over the next few days, however, she and Muche grew to adore one another, and a stronger pair had never been seen in the Horde battlegrounds. By the time Ikult was strong enough to tame a raptor mount, she and Muche were unstoppable.
Many times over the last few years, she's been criticized heavily for her choice of companion- though those complaints turn to shrieks as she gleefully lets her friend loose on the nay-sayers. In calmer moments, Ikult admits Muche has lost some of his usefullness through the different lands they've traversed and difficult legendary bosses they've faced, but she can't forget how much happiness she would've missed out on if she had ignored that small, scrawny bat in the dim forest, so long ago.
(TL;DR: My NE will be using Rak'shiri; my Troll a plain Tirisfal bat)

I think I'm going to use one of the new crabs or a shale spider. I'm kinda wanting a smaller, convenient pet for leveling and the shale spider just resonates with me. I will probably swap around a different pet every day just for fun.
I'm almost hurting from the anticipation of trying out the new focus mechanic. PTR won't load for me some how and... well, I just want it on live... right now. We've waited long enough...
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

I'll level with my fave pet, Tiger, my Durotar Tiger He was my very first pet I ever tamed back in the day and he experiences everything with me!! So he will be the one to level to 85 with me.
Other then that I will probably level my tanking pet turtle and Gondria for when I go BM.
Last on the list will be all the new pets I'll tame!!
