There really is no trick to it... it's all about timing.

From what I vaguely remember... I threw the food at the wolf, the wolf ran towards me and hit the frost trap, 11sec (about 9sec left on frost/ice trap) later I start Tame beast (20 second tame with no haste).

The best way to test this out would be to lay down an frost trap, throw the food, have wolf run into trap... and when the trap has 1sec left start tame... if the wolf gets away start at 2sec next time, and if the wolf get tamed but loses the oil buff then try and start the tame when the frost trap breaks.

Having a faster tame beast is awesome, but it might be a pain in the rear for this tame.

Haste isnt really needed. ._.; I had no haste buffs. this isnt like a boss like The Beast where haste is needed. You just need to time the tame just right.

You don't want a faster tame for this guy.

The best thing a person taming the Oil Wolf can do right now is to remove all haste items and see what the timing is doing it the way I mention above.

can anyone actually confirm that the taming process of this wolf is still doable in the 4.0.1 patch? I unfortunately did not get the chance to try for this one before patch day and would rather not waste someone else's time for hours trying to tame it. I know that if you've tamed it beforehand the oil coat still exists but I'm specifically asking about taming it this patch.
Thanks in advance!

I was able to tame the Oil-stained Wolf today (10/14) and it DID keep it's oily coat buff. With Tame Beast now being a 10 second channel though, the timing is different than what's previously been mentioned. I did about an hours worth of attempts trying different things til it finally worked for me. I don't know yet if what I did is actually repeatable or just a fluke, but I will try to verify the process again when I get some time. If anyone else is looking to try it, here's what I did:

and sorry if this ends up wordy

I removed most of my gear so my haste rating was 0. I dropped a trap halfway between the wolf and the person baiting the wolf. They tossed the bait and let the wolf run into the trap. And right there is where I went off the beaten path lol. As soon as the wolf was trapped I had the person baiting it run within melee range of the wolf. Having them within melee range of the trapped wolf caused the wolf to despawn approximately 15 seconds after it was trapped...so for me (with 20 second trap duration) the wolf despawned with 5-6 seconds left on my trap. This part I was able to repeat and could continually force the despawn after about 15 seconds of being trapped.

On the attempt that apparently worked, I started the tame with 16 seconds left on my trap. The wolf despawned while still trapped just like it was supposed to. There was no yellow flash on the wolf and no system message like I saw with most of the previous failures. I checked my call pet button and there was no 4th pet listed, so I figured it was just another bad attempt. We picked another wolf and went through the process again but this time when I hit the Tame Beast button I got a system message that said I had too many pets. I was able to call and dismiss all of the 3 pets I already had with me, but still no 4th pet listed. I relogged quick and the wolf did show up as my 4th pet. When I called the wolf it still had it's oily coat.

Hmm, I totally forgot about the wolf being able to despawn in the trap if you were too close... this might be the easiest way to get him unless someone can test where the wolf needs to be at the exact moment (be it running at you after being fed using no frost trap, or 0sec-2sec left on the frost trap after getting the wolf in it) of starting Tame Beast's 10sec cast.

I would try it out but me and King Krush have been trying to go out on a date, and either I am too early or too late... or he just doesn't want to be seen because he needs to wash his hair.

And he doesn't have hair, so he must be avoiding you. :o (Sorry, believe me, I know how old Basin circling can get. >_< Good luck!)

Thanks for the excellent breakdown, Ma3lstrom!

I had him before this last patch so I was helping a friend we just couldnt get it right. We worked around the 8 sec trap then tame that I used and it just wasnt working. We also have a prob cause my trap is 20 sec and her's shows 30 sec. Went out today and tried your way Ma3lstrom. Confirmed I just tamed him twice once with my clothes on and once without both at 16 sec worked both times. Will try tonight with her hopefully it still works.

Ty very much Ma3lstrom!

OK, so let me see if I follow this...

1) remove all gear to hast is zero
2) lay down trap
3) bait wolf
4) wolf hits trap
5) when trap time hits 16 seconds, start taming
6) cross your fingers it works

So distance has nothing to do with it? I don't know why I'm having such a hard tiem grasping this concept, and for that I apologize. I want to try this soon but want to make sure I understand the nuances before finding someone that hasn't done the quest yet.

It seems a lot simpler than what i expected. My hunter (85) is horde :headbang: , so my alliance buddy ran the quest for me.

Breakdown:
1) Player1 throws bait. (wolf turns neutral/yellow text)
2) Wolf runs up.
3) Wait 1 second after he stops to eat.
4) Cast tame beast.
5) wolf begins to run away & disappears right as you finish your cast. (nameplate turns red for split second)
**it wont show that you tamed it & you may not hear the sound of it leveling, but don't be dismayed.
6) /camp & re-enter game
7) call stabled pet & feed it ;)

I did this today (3/3/2011) on Travohh (realm: Destromath)
patch 4.0.6

While playing on the PTR earlier I made a premade hunter so I'd have a empty stable to test new pets out. I tried to get the wolf to retain it's oily coat and nothing works. I dunno if it's just me, but for right now I will say this: get your oily wolf now before the patch while you can cause chances are Blizz has hotfixed this for real now. I'm gonna try to tame The Lone Hunter to see if he keeps the sword in his head still or not.

And to those of you who got your flaming pig, better take as many photos as you want cause when I called mine out in the PTR the flames were gone and he was a normal boar. =\ Hold onto your pets after you take your photos so that in case it was just if it was just the PTR was bring glitchy. Just thought I'd give you the heads up and whatnot.
