Swinging back in, because I hadn't noticed this post earlier. I did some investigative reporting (aka, running around naked and punching things). The Carrion Scarabs are spawned by a nerubian type mob named Crypt Horror (there are also Crypt Slayers, Crypt Walkers, and Crypt Stalkers in the tunnel). It's a very simple "Summon Carrion Scarab" spell the mob does. These mobs do exist in beta, though their levels have been lowered.

UNFORTUNATELY, the scarabs they summon are now classified as undead instead of beasts.

Thanks for going back and checking that, ummeiko... looks like the only way I'll have a red beetle is if I'm willing to put up with the lvl 84 color changers... boooo. :(

They're now classified as Beasts! And set as tameable! However when you try it says they're already controlled!! Gah :p

Ah well, at least it looks like they intend for these to become tameable red scarabs. They just aren't quite there yet.

NICE.

Sounds like they listened to my post on suggestions forum!

What happens if you kill their summoner first and then try taming the beetle? Any difference?

I believe that even if you control the "summoner" or what-have-you first, it will still tell you it's being controlled by another creature. I tried to tame an owl last night on live and even though I killed its master first, it still told me it was under control by another creature. :(

Yeah, I recall something like that with the red hyenas in wpl too... but figured it was worth a try at least, since this unit obviously is in a state of flux. :)

Yeah, same with the Angered Arakkoa Protectors (blue two-headed vultures) in BEM. They've been flagged as tameable for a long time (perhaps always), but never actually tameable because of the "controlled" thing, even if their summoner was dead.

In this case though, as you noted, the model is likely to become tamable else why would they be making changes to such an otherwise obscure unit?

Here's hoping! :headbang:

Still broken in this build (13221). The Angered Arakkoa Protector in BEM is still untameable for the same reason.

I have a theory that Blizzard is sufficiently pushed for time that they're basically mass-tameable-ing mobs with particular models, hence most of the beetles became tameable all at once, and then they sorted out the problems later (c.f. the Dire Maul Carrion Swarmers and their shape change). Hence just cos it was made tameable doesn't mean it was intended to be tameable, it may just have got caught in the net. (But here's hoping).

Since this happened shortly after the summoned white worm was made tamable (e.g. another case of an otherwise unobtainable* pet being made available as a summoned guardian), I'm holding out for the idea that this was done by design, but that they didn't bother to fully test it because they were in a rush.

Even if you're right though, the fact that 1) there are currently no red beetles with fixed color and 2) it's already halfway there may make Blizzard more open to the idea of bringing it the rest of the way.

*for beetles, unobtainable = outside of the uldum color changers.

There are Lava Beetles in Bastion of Twilight raid instance with that red skin. I'll have a look later and see if they're tameable.

Yeah they are tameable. 85e Lava Scarabs.

I had to drop 100 feet into lava and died within about 3 seconds to get this pic. I'll think this over and try to come up with a plan to solo one.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

YES YES YES! :headbang: :headbang:

FINALLY - RED BEETLE WILL BE MINE.

Thank you for checking!!! :D

EDIT: I'd imagine you could get one by sending your pet down to aggro it, and let it run back with angry beetle in tow; that's usually how I nab tough to reach creatures... and ofc once yr pet is back, dismiss it and tame the beetle.

That won't work as they are too far to send pet on them, it does look possible with a drop down then proc some godlike haste to get the tame time shortened before you snuff it in the lava, or bring a healer but that's cheating. Solo tame or nothing.

Some more thoughts:

1) Are there any fire resistance potions that would give enough short term resistance to fire dmg to make it through?

2) Are there any outcroppings at edge of the lava that you could crawl onto after dunking in, and do the tame from there?

3) Are there any ledges midway down; close enough to you, to drop to without dying and close enough to the lava, to send your pet down from there?

Man I wish I had a beta key right now

Hmm just noticed Bastion is a raid? If so, then you might as well bring a healer along if you're going to have to get an extra just to get inside?

There's a Tol Barad trinket with 400 res proc for 20 seconds, I have one on my main hunter but that's locked with a boss kill clearing the mobs related to them, one being these beetles. You can only reach them by falling into the lava, no other way to get close. Haste procs I have are hurricane weapon enchant, troll berserking, rapid fire, liferoot from herbalism and a speed pot. Should be able to nail this solo tame, I'll give it a good try when I'm prepared for it and have some free time. I only do solo tames.
