A Tactical Retreat is not Defeat

Unread post by Sochi »

So I figured that Pre-Cata/Post Stable Upgrade would be a nifty time for me to hunt King Krush. I figured, I have the time, I have the health boost and I have a couple tricks. Add that to stories here on the forums of others successes and I figured that I would have a fair chance. All I had to do was find Krush.

Simple, right? I'm no stranger to long and insanity inducing hunting. Loque'nahak, Skoll, and Time Lost Proto Drake (one and a half times now with this guy) are on my list, along with camps with others for their sought-after companion. I could handle this. Right?

Uh, I'd like my words on a toasted roll, with mustard. Yeah. Lots of mustard.

I didn't take into account the idiots that might take joy out of setting off other hunter's scans. I got no less than four false alarms yesterday. Some of those I have to say were intentional. Some of them were innocent and those I can forgive. But there's nothing more blood pressure spiking than an alert. And when that proves false...? There's little more that I hate in this game right now. Really, people, manners. Elbows off the table and no taking Sholazar rares for walkies in the Basin along spawn points, please.

So this is what I am doing. I am going to give myself a time limit on this hunt. I have never done this, but I think my shredded sanity deserves it. This is Tuesday. If by next Monday, I do not find Krush and tame him successfully without grief, then I'll be a happy hunter. If by next Monday I do not get my tame, then I will put this aside. I will leave Sholazar Basin alone, only visiting to get Oracle Eggs for a possible Proto Drake. There, I have set my personal ultimatum on the table as it were. That's why I wrote this.

I feel a bit better now.

You just KNOW he's going to turn up when you go to get your egg, y'know.

*hugs* He'll turn up for ya soon. I'm glad you're taking a break, though; all this camping can't be good for the system.

I find a fly-through at stupid 'o clock a.m. now and then is the best tactic. That said, a few days ago while camping Gondria, I popped to the bathroom, and when I came back NPC_Scan was popped, but there was no beast in sight. I checked combat logs, and saw a hunter gaining "Spirit Beast's Spirit Bond," so for a couple minutes I was just sick, kicking myself for bad luck.

Then it occurred to me that the tame would (should) have shown, too, so I checked the guy in question's Armory, used View Page Source and saw that Spirit Beast (NPC Name Gondria) was level 80.

Bastards, honestly.

Lol I did this on accident while fishing I had Krush out and I had no idea about NPC_scan and that it would set off an alarm as I didn't use it at the time. But I was nice and put him away.

Assuming they're not just farming bots, it can't hurt to say something! I was killing time while waiting for TLPD trying to get a screenshot of Skoll and my T5 shoulders doin' their lightning thing at the same time and didn't even think about it until a petless hunter landed next to me and said "oh, dammit!"

It's annoying as heck, but not always intentional!

I know how you feel, Sochi... I've been looking for Loque and man! Logging in in the Basin to find 15 hunters from your own faction and most likely as many from the opposite faction is disheartening. Having idiots farm ore with their SB rare out just seals the deal. If I find him before Cata, great! But I'm no longer actively looking, cause I just wasn't leaving the Basin. "One more circle. ... Gah, gotta relog and clear cache! .... ok, one more circle. ..." It's frustrating, and asking in general just gets you a bunch of hunters outbidding each other for the tame. :(

I know its not always intentional. But intentional or not, it's still a pain. Calm down, log out, clear cache, log back in.

I don't bother with general chat or rewards. I'll let other guildies offer for me and I'll help foot the bill. I appreciate all the help I can get. But this tactic tends to lead to other idiots. "Oh if I see it, I'll kill it." was one lovely reply from a paladin. It's just not me to announce my intentions to the general WoW public. I'd rather keep my business private

I may have better luck post-cata, but I'll stick with this for the time I set forth in the o.p.

I do feel bad if my pets set off NPCscan but I like to use all of them. :/ I think I got lucky; on Feathermoon, we had a pretty good network going so people had an idea of who spawned when. Griefing was rare (I didn't experience it but maybe I got lucky).

I wish you lots of luck in your hunt. The green dino is rad. I'd like him and/or Skoll but after 6 weeks of sitting in the Basin I ... I think I'm gonna chill and level some of my other pets, solo some ZG and run around. It really isn't good for your sanity to camp too much, even if you want something super badly.

Use SilverDragon. It won't go off for hunter pets. That doesn't solve the issues of their manners, but it will keep you from a heart attack.

Personally I don't use NPCScan; I just use a simple targeting macro and limit myself to one sweep at a time.

Krush is the one (tamable) rare in wotlk that I've never bothered with - saw him once getting beaten on by a DK, but that was it. One thing I learned from taming The Beast, was that mobs with tame interrupts are bad enough all by themselves, but at least in his case I could go back and repeat as often as I wished, without other players pestering me, until I was able to get it right; after that experience I had no desire to try that on a rare spawn where every GY run (and subsequent heal up) would be filled with the dread that he would be grabbed by someone else... no thanks, too much left to chance for my liking...

That was how I felt before 4.0; now that tame is on a 10 second cast, I could see trying for Krush except that I'm not wild about his coloration... :|

No one says you have to! The only reason I bothered hunting for Krush so hard was BECAUSE of his color. :D Then I got hopelessly attached.

I'm about ready to commit myself. I've been after a spirit beast, ANY spirit beast, for three weeks. Not only have I never seen even a shadow of one, I've not seen a corpse, a taming-in-progress, nothing. Just a ton of campers. It's probably the most depressing thing I've ever done in this game.

Don't feel too bad - it's honestly still a bit busy in most areas because hunters are like WOO 20 slots and cheap dual spec. What helped me is asking around and helping other hunters. You'll get one! I think on my server Skoll would be the hardest to get (Seriously, there were FOUR hunters at one of his spawn spots. Yikes). Gondria would probably be easiest (I think she's my favorite. Purple 4ever), since she's not an achievement and not as popular as Loque. The Bear isn't TOO bad but he only has one spot so everyone is there. I tried for Skoll a few weeks on Scarlet Crusade and ... yeah, nada. Nor on FM either. But I'm taking a break from camping for awhile before I end up loony (SO glad to be done with the basin unless I get a wild hair and go for Krush...) tunes.

I'm gonna bet dollars to dimes though that when Cata drops Northrend will be mostly empty.

That's why I put a time frame on this hunt, though I am dreading the weekend. I may avoid the Basin all together and work on an alt instead. My goals are to get to Krush and keep my sanity in the process. But weekends are even more crowded than weeknights and I have this bad feeling that when I do find him, I won't be the only one who does.

One way or the other, this hunt is on hold after Tuesday. I hope. I should make a Loop Jar. If after my time limit is over, I find myself doing loops -"Just one loop, won't hurt" ~thirty rounds later...-I'll put a gold in the Guild Bank.

This. And you don't have a cache to clear. I believe NPCscan was more designed to those achievement hunters for the kills so you won't get the alert twice from the same rare....

Silverdragon, however, will not always go off. For me, it SOMETIMES goes off when I've already targeted the mob, which makes it useless. NPCscan, however, will always go off as long as the cache is clear, and it will usually go off before the mob is even in sight.

*nod* I don't trust SilverDragon, as Saturo says it only sometimes works for me. I have it more as a spare-tire....NPCscan is reliable, SD is the 'just in case' addon. x)
