How do you name your pets?
How do you name your pets?
With the current lack of ideas for my... new bundle of pets, I was curious how you all name your pets.
Personally I like little wacky funny names for my pets. For example my red corehound is bubbles, my green is fluffy, and my white is snowball.
Also +1 First Post!
Edit: Apperently this was moved. How was I suppose to know that there was a section tucked away somewhere? XD

Re: How do you name your pets?
Welcome to the forums iKrow :0)
I draw inspiration for my pet names from many different sources. Some of these sources come from names I've come across in Other Games that I play (such as Final Fantasy), Naming Websites where I am able to research names that carry a specific meaning I am looking for, Random Objects or Likes that I personally have (i.e.: I like flowers irl, so I'll use their actual names or genus names for my pets; My Dwarf's bear is named Huggins which is taken from a Beanie Baby Bear bearing the same name.), Names from Mythology or Folklore, etc.
For the most part, I prefer names that are serious. I'll also consider "cutesy" names if it fits the pet.

Re: How do you name your pets?
I hate non RP names, or even silly names. Now, please dont think Im slamming you! Its just not my thing is all I spose. I think cause I see the critters more like an actual person than a pet.
Anyways, I try to name mine off of mythological beings, lesser known ones that resemble the pet or the concept I have of said pet. Currently, some are named after death or soul eater beings, as Im going to racechange to Forsaken when I can, and work that into a RP story line.
If not that, for some reason I have been naming other pets with names that sound like Aztec, Mayan etc names.

Re: How do you name your pets?
I prefer for all the pets on a hunter to follow a naming theme. Some themes I've used include: characters from a novel, all names beginning with a particular letter, rocks and minerals, plants. Ones from some of my less serious hunter alts (yes, I have too many hunter alts) include alcoholic drinks, poker terminology, and food.

Re: How do you name your pets?
Hmm.... On my main, I don't have a naming theme, but I like names not to be too silly. I try to come up with a name I find suits the pet's look or the personality I imagine - for example my Arcturis was named Avalon after I ran about with him for a bit and suddenly thought to myself that he looked like mist. My spiky wind serpent was tamed and named on a whim - Scythe was the first name that popped into my head and I really like it. Loque I named Zephyr because, well, I don't quite know. Somehow I feel it fits.
On my alt hunter, I've decided that her joie-de-vivre translates into a joy in seeing the beauty in the little things - she names her pets by a colour theme. Her orange ravager, for example, is named Rust, her grey crocolisk is Argenta, and Humar is Nero. The names fit the theme but also give the pets a ton of personality.
I have another hunter planned, a goblin named Noëlle. She will only tame red pets and their names will be Christmas themed. I've no idea where I came up with this, but I love it so I'll see if I can stick to it. I obviously won't be able to get a red devilsaur, but I was going to tame the brown one (which coincidentally is called the Red Devilsaur
) and name it Cinnamon. The red wind serpent is going to be Ribbon. Hmm... I'll probably use the name Tinsel cause I like it a lot, but I don't know for what pet. I am definitely taming the Sunburst Adder and naming her Candyapple.
I am looking forward to playing this hunter a LOT.
Side note: don't be upset that your post was moved, the mods were simply trying to keep things organised so that others who are looking for naming ideas and discussions can find the relevant threads.

Re: How do you name your pets?
Well, I had Pandora Radio on when I tamed my OCJ. It was playing some song and this line popped up:
Your paranoia's probably worse
Now, the tame dinged done just at the end of the second word. Somehow that translated over and he ended up as Paranoia.
Deadlock's interesting because I don't really know where her name comes from. She just...got it?
Torrogar came totally out of nowhere.
Kael, DathRemar, and Anesterian are all blood elf rulers.
Mari and Kaido are a pair of videogame characters - Kaido <3's Mari, Mari <3'ed Kaido's bro before he died, and they eventually end up close, no canon relationship though. (Cloud Serpent and Scalewing Shredder)
Bloodlord was because Hakkar is the blood god and Bloody is his son. (Son of Hakkar)
Kirin is named because a kirin is a sort of good-luck unicorn that has carp scales on its body and a more antler-like horn, and Wind Serpents have carp scales. Srs.

Re: How do you name your pets?
As a troll role-player I try to give my pets trollish sounding names. Most of my pets names are either African, Japanese, or Maori in origin, but some I just make up because they sound cool.
A rare visitor to this forum now that I don't play WoW anymore, but forever a Petopian.

I named my Silithid Tango today. I figure it fits his personality, his idle animation is kinda... jittery

Re: How do you name your pets?
Cerah doesn't really have a theme for her pets -- as my first Hunter and main, she just names them whatever seems to fit her pets best. The exceptions are my spirit beasts, which have names relating to dreams, Reverie (Skoll) and Myst (Gondria). Myst is a bit of a stretch, it's after a series of old computer games where people write books that literally act as gateways to other worlds -- other worlds --> dreams --> Myst. Bit of a runaround, but it works.
Leata is named after an online friend of mine, Lita, who's a Transformers fan fic writer (one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of reading as well), so all her pets are named after Transformers, even if indirectly. Her first two, Mia and Hyde, are short for Chromia and Ironhide (Ironhide itself is one of Cerah's pet names, so I didn't want to reuse it directly). Tarantulus and Quickstriike are from Beast Wars, Moonracer is named after one of the four named female autobots that appeared in a season two, original series episode (the others are Chromia, Firestar, and Optimus Prime's girlfriend, Elita One), and Nightfire is the name of a Transformer fan character created by the RL Lita.
Toeph is the first Hunter I created with a definate theme in mind. She's named after Toph, my favourite character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and all her pets are named after other characters in the show. See here for a character description sheet, if you want to see how her pets relate to each character.
Lydeea is my Undead Hunter, and she's named after Lydia from Beetlejuice. I want all her pets to use a Tim Burton naming theme. The only one I have a name for so far is her spider starter pet, Ginger, named after Beetlejuice's tap-dancing spider neighbour in the cartoon version. I'm sure I'll think of others.
edit: Now Ginger has been joined by Zero the demon dog, named after Jack Skellington's ghost dog in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Veruca the Outlands-style red raptor, after Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Iracebeth the Cataclysm colour-changing crocolisk, after the Red Queen in Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland. Thank the nether for Wikipedia!
To answer the original question though, if you want a certain naming theme for your pets, go for it! If you don't, don't worry about it. One of the best things about being a Hunter, IMO, is that we have so much freedom when it comes to our pets, including their names. Have fun with it, and pick the name you think is best.

Re: How do you name your pets?
Right now, I'm working on a Final Fantasy-themed naming list.
Black Devilsaur - Bahamut
Red/Orange Dragonhawk - Phoenix (not original, but fits)
Turtle - Adamantoise
Cats (yes, 2) - Stiria (Blue Saber) and Nix (Black w/ White Stripe Cat), the Shiva Sisters
Jormungar Worm - Leviathan
Polar Bear - Umaro
Black Wolf - Fenrir
Brown Rhino - Titan
Green Chimaera - Anima
And I'm gonna use Carbuncle for the White Fox, Ifrit for the Fire Turtle, and a toss-up on Maduin or Alexander for my Spirit Beast. Unless I end up with Skoll, then it's Ramuh. Still got a few to name still though...

Skrimir - Level 85, and never did a single Northrend or Cataclysm Quest/Dungeon. Gogo Archaeology!
My Stables - Still trying to find a name for my Raptor, in a Final Fantasy genre-styling.

Re: How do you name your pets?
I name my pets so different
Müsli, my spotted snowleopard, When i tougth of it, it was a perfect logical name for that pet, when i thougth of the cerial. It has oakmeal, raisins, nuts etc in it.When you pour enough milk, all you can see is the black raisins floating in milk. Lots of black spots in white= Snowleopards
Else i just come up with the name after running with the pet for some times, other pets i think about for AGES before comming up with the PERFECT name. I am very very very picky... i drive my husband nuts
2000 names. com is a good site for inspiration, but tbh i seldom use any names from there.
I use names that means something to me.. Like Unrest.. i got some fond memories of that zone in everquest1, same with neriak..
Iggy, Mocca, both names i "stole" from the first guild i ever was in, i server moved since but i still keep the ppl there in fond memorie, so these 2 names are names of two of my best friends pets..
To me, a name need to have soul.. or to be funny like my Roary (i think its fun!)

Re: How do you name your pets?
My blood elf pets are mostly Dr. Who themed names except one or two.
Oodsong - Arcturis
Davros - Hive Controller
Tegan - Strider Clutchmother
KayNine - Kurken
RiverSong - Aotona
Frostbyte - Ghost Saber
Abracadabra - Arikara (used to appear in a dramatic *puff* of smoke)
My Troll hunter has some silly named pets, and some more serious. She likes names that start with or contain a Z, but doesn't use that as an unbreakable rule.
Spirit Beasts:
Zephyr - Loque
Zanaiah - Gondria
Devilsaurs
Zydeco - Krush
Moshamba - Mosh
Zoltor - Tyrantus
PinkyWinky - White Devilsaur
Rares
Araga
Azzere
Grogathle - Terror Spinner (not sure if I am gonna keep him)
Vixzen - Ashtail (wanted a fox-like name, but putting the Z in it just seemed to fit)
Zellda - Arash-ethis
AvadaKedavra - Oil-Stain wolf
Still working on a name for my Chromaggus!

Re: How do you name your pets?
If no name comes to mind I look up Norse myths for the spirit beasts and pick a name from there. I have Heimdall, Tyr, Fenrir, and Loki (used to be my Loque-but I renamed him to a character name when I saw two others running around with the same name O_o).
I also just look up myths. I couldn't come up with a name for my ancient turtle. Search wikipedia and found this "According to traditional Japanese beliefs the tortoise is a haven for the immortals and the world mountain and symbolizes longevity, good luck, and support. It is the symbol of Kumpira, the god of the seafaring people." Ended up naming him Kumpria.
I also visit baby name sites and put in name meanings, do a search and see what I find. Thus my white parrot is Argent, and I have a black saber tiger named Slade.

Re: How do you name your pets?
I love hardcore Tolkien References, as well as HP references, Latin, and a few names that I come up on my own. For example, My Chimaera is named Glaurung after "The Children of Hurin"
"You cannot judge me, I am Justice itself! We were meant for more than this, to protect the innocent. But, if our precious laws bind you all to inaction, then I will no longer stand as your brother." - Tyrael
Re: How do you name your pets?
I try to find something that fits the pet, either in appearance or ability. Sometimes I go with something in another language. My Arcticus is named Inuka (which I shamelessly found on this site and fell in love with it). And sometimes I go with something silly. My undead eagle is named BlightBeak and my crystal spider (love that model) is named Swarovski. Other times I do a homage to what I'm taming. My Silithid tank with the exposed brain I named Buru, since I love Buru so much.
Really, it depends on what feels right for the pet. Strangely though, I used to be so bad at naming my pets that my Echeyakee is named Arikara. For anyone from Vanilla that quested in Thousand Needles before the flooding, they'd know that there used to be a huge questline to find out more about the wind serpents there, and you find out that there's an NPC wind serpent named Arikara that you have to kill.
I didn't even remember where the name was from, but I fell in love with it. Some people used to ask me about it, but as of 4 years ago, that stopped as people started leveling alts in faster spots than 1k Needles.

I generally go into a room, spin around with my eyes closed and point randomly. Whatever I point at is the pets name!

Re: How do you name your pets?
When I lack ideas, I reset to my personal default: LeonardNimoy. I just love Mr Nimoy so much! <3
Otherwise, it's usually names that has something to do with astronomy: stars, constellations, the like. I even have an EventHorizon.
Then, there are: BillShatner (come on, I HAVE to have Shatner with Nimoy!), ZachQuinto and ChrisPine (same as with Shatner and Nimoy), and Enterprise, since I'm such a huge Trekkie.
Then oddballs, for example Polly for a parrot...
And my new Warp Stalker is called JethroGibbs, since nothing speaks Magnificent Badass quite like him.
I do try to stick to the astronomical theme, but I mostly fail.

Re: How do you name your pets?
I do mostly RPish names... I named my Chromag Basilica because I thought the way it sounded was nice. I have an undead birdy I named Asphodel, which is a poisonous flower/herb if I remember correctly. I also got one of those ghostly worms for my ghostly pet collection and named it Inch. Inch worm... ahahaha I such a dork.
Sometimes when I get pets I don't name them right away because I like to have a name that fits the pet. Sometimes I use mythology, but usually I just look at the pet, take in what it looks like, and go from there.
I'd also like to say I named my seagull Sheldon after The Big Bang Theory character.

Re: How do you name your pets?
Heh. I suggested to a random hunter yesterday that he should name his Seagull pet Steven. It all happened because of an innocent typo he made asking about taming a "seagall" and then I asked "Steven Seagall?" and when he replied "Seagull*" I responded "You should totally name it Steven though."
