The hunter - a close friend - claimed it was 16-24hrs. The Atlas is years out of date, it could have been changed.

Heh. Now I'll have to watch my back.

I wonder if he is free for 2011.

Pond's kind of a jerk though, I've had a few nasty run-ins with him and no one in trade likes him. GL getting any help from him, though you may catch him on a good day. As far as I could gather (about 3 weeks ago) on the realm forums, no one in the last ~7 months, possibly longer, has landed a TLPD kill (save him) and he loooooooooves to gloat abt it. He tries to advertise his guild in trade and lots of people laugh or snap at him.

He only camps it because Ponderance was attacked by it once and he didn't feel like killing it (how do you miss that a mob is a rare???) and he's been hell-bent on getting the mount for ALL of his toons on his 4 separate accounts ever since. /rant.

Back on topic here; Love that spawn timer on Grunter =(

Uggggghh I've been camping Skoll for 6 hours and he hasn't shown up yet. I guess it's possible someone else could have got him while I wasn't looking but I haven't seen his corpse or really many other hunters in the area.

So tired.

I can confirm as well, as I tamed both in the same day within a 4 hour stretch, both spawned in the same location as well.

Regarding all the recent discussion...

The 3-rare limit makes sense. I've popped several rares in a row, and if you did the pull path, you'd likely get more.

Pond may or may not be a jerk, but that's one of the cool/aggravating things about this game. Players change the dynamics.

The KEY thing I would suggest for anyone camping a rare is work on a 8 or 12 hour timer. There have been several times I would see Loq or Krush at the same time every day or every other day for a week or so... then I would get out of synch and not see them again. Keep coming back once you know that kill or tame time.

On my original hunt, five days, loss of sleep, & countless Searing Elementals later, I've seen Ravage twice, Spiteflayer twice, & still no sighting of the elusive, ebony porker known as Grunter.

I've done my very best to be on when he 'should' have spawned with no luck, & with the rolling restarts (though I can't confirm it actually reset any timers cause both spite & ravage spawned close in timer from the night before), & with another rolling restart tomorrow, as well as fire elementals hanging out at one of his spawn areas it wouldn't surprise me if while I slept for a few hours he got turned into pork chops, alas I'll keep trying... Grunter... ahh... Grunter. I have 2xTLPD, all 4 spirit beasts x2 and Aotona and Krush x2, and I've never, ever.. ever.. seen Grunter.

Camped him for weeks and weeks back in the day when he was ideal for learning new pet skills, and recently with the coming changes. never ever seen him.

Huh. I have never had any interaction with Ponderance on any of his toons that weren't polite and helpful.

Weird.

He does seem a little bit arrogant, maybe not arrogant, but overconfident maybe?

He's helped friends of mine get TLPDs for their characters. He's just gotten burned out on camping rares (understandably), so maybe he doesn't like being asked. He said on his website that he will help camp them for a fee. I've read his website, and he seems to prefer fair play (don't camp on top of someone, find your own spot, cooperation gets further than being obstructive of others, etc.) so while his personality may be abrasive, I appreciate the good info he's put together. :)

I guess you can tell that I actually read trade chat. ...or... not. I have never heard of Pond before today, and I have been on Area 52 since it became a server. (It was my third server)

Regarding Grunter... I camped him like mad when we all found out he was going to turn into a red helboar. I tamed him about 3-4 days after starting the camp.

Then about a month or so later when it was announced that all Felboars were going to be tameable and Grunter turned into that ugly puke color... I abandoned him. With all of the other unique skins that were just made available... I doubt I will miss him at all, because I would more than likely would have gotten rid of him anyway to get something else.

I am all for unique one-mob-only skins... but Grunter's new color come Cataclysm is butt ugly, IMO.

I've heard reports from other players saying they killed a rare (Rak'shiri) and a little bit later the same one re spawned.

This was my impression, just from having read the site. Love him, hate him, gotta respect the info he's gathered and made available.

I've spotted Vyra six times in a row now. Been figuring out how to gamble a bit so I can still camp one spawn point pretty hardcore, but maintain a life outside of it. He's my main source. :)

@Adam: Could be low level rares. Those things spawn like baby bunnies.

Kalliope wrote:Spawn timers may stretch out longer than they currently do, but the rares will still cycle out if left undiscovered. I have a theory that sitting with a rare spawn keeps it spawned, because that part of the game needs to continue to exist to support the player inside it. This way, that section of the game never unloads, along with the rare spawn.
This makes a lot of sense. If there is nobody viewing a zone, then all of it can be safely discarded to free up memory and resources. I suspect it might not be actual zone boundaries that are used, due to line-of-sight, model size/view distance (think Putridus), etc. The concept sounds very plausible though.
Just a theory, since no one can really prove what happens to a rare that no one is watching unless they have firsthand knowledge of the system as to what will happen (cause if no one's watching, how can you tell if someone doesn't come along and kill it?).
That's almost Zen... :)

If it's a low-population area though, you could do frequent /who <zonename> and see if anyone shows up in the zone. If nobody does during the time you're monitoring it, but when you come back to the rare and it's no longer there, that would be pretty definite proof however. Though maybe not right now with elementals running around attacking everything.

Actually, thinking a bit more about it, there is one place you could try to test it. In Eversong woods, to the east of Silvermoon there is the abandoned tower with a couple of lowbie quests. The only way into the area currently is via the narrow pass following the road from Silvermoon. There is a rare spawn that spawns down near the shore somewhere. If, and that's a very big if I admit, it's only sub-zone and line-of-sight that is required, it would be possible to first find the rare, then go back up the road and sit there for some time. If you don't see anyone go past you, you can be pretty certain that nobody has gotten to the rare (main exception being if someone had previously logged out down there). If the rare has disappeared by the time you go back to find it, the theory would be proven. Of course, between the current elemental invasion and the upcoming old-world flying, it's probably too late to test this.
I submit to you Outland as proof of this theory. If there wasn't some sort of cap/despawning system in place, then virtually every Outland rare would be up simultaneously in the dead of night on lesser populated servers. And trust me, I've checked. They aren't.
Yes, I've done entire Outland sweeps without finding a single rare up, even though there is only a handful of people in all of Outland, with many zones completely empty.

Still no word on Mosh's spawn timer or any confirmation if his respawn is really 180 hours?

It's possible. I've heard the time lost drake taking up to a full week to spawn.

The TLPD doesn't work that way.

He's a random spawn of a random spawn (Vyragosa), so RNG dictates that he might not spawn for a month. Or he might spawn three times in the same week. The Vyra/TLPD timer seems to be hanging around 24h max, though it CAN go longer. This is a pretty safe bet for a ballpark figure, since Storm Peaks has a LOT of ground to cover.

King Mosh basically stays put when he spawns, so he's a completely different story.

I've also never seen TLPD in the wild either, was aforementioned that he could possibly share with Vyras' time, but I don't know personally
