First: Shame on you. You made my heart skip.

Second: You didn't do it, you weren't able to duplicate. You have a white wolf, not a ghost wolf. What you did is easily duplicated, over and over, every time. What the OP did was actually get a ghost wolf permanently.

I have the Grimtotem wolf on my own hunter, I'm currently trying to to tame the Ghostpaws on my wife's hunter with no luck.

However, I do have a theory. This theory assumes that the tame can be duplicated and thus not part of being disconnected, freezing or glitching the game. Obviously, the tame was accomplished and subsequently abandoned prior to the game showing signs of 'glitching.' Getting that out of the way, let's take a look:

I think we can agree that a successful tame would be one that, A) looks like a "ghost wolf," obviously, and B) has the buff "Ghostform" to cause it to be so.

Therefore, we must look at what happens when you tame a beast, of which the most important fact is that beasts lose any buffs or debuffs on them when the transfer from being enemy NPC to pet NPC.

From this, we can gather that the tame must be accomplished while the wolf is still 'white' yet me also manage to get the buff to be placed onto the wolf after the tame in order for it to hold and not be 'cleansed' via taming. This is akin to the 'Oily' wolf. The reason the Oily wolf tame works, from my reasoning, is that the wolf was tamed with the buff but the wolf despawns at the exact moment just prior to the 'cleansing' of the oily buff. Since no cleanse occured, the buff remains.

However, with the Ghostpaw, there is no despawn point, and thus our only thing to work on is not on how to get the buff to resist a cleansing, but how to get the buff after the cleansing.

All this being said, I think the OP is and has been on the right track all along, but just didn't know it. The OP was attempting to the opposite of the Oily wolf, treating the transformation into the Ghostwolf as a spawn ... and thus taming at the point of spawning versus taming at the point of despawning.

I think the key may be to find the magic point right before transformation.

By this I mean I believe if you can succeed in the tame as the buff is being cast, yet getting the buff to be applied after the game checks for buffs/debuffs and cleansing any, then you will succeed in the tame.

This may also explain the two pets he had (one white wolf visable, one ghost wolf invisible). He tamed a white wolf, which is what is was (theoretically, I wasn't there) at the point of taming, yet the game also registered a tame of one with a buff, and the game then became confused and overloaded his whistle/traveling stable.

Obviously, as I've said, it's just theory. But I think I'm pretty close. I'm currently trying to tame at this point: a split-second prior to transformation, versus the exact point or just after.

Keep posting, let's do this. Anybody else with theories?

Edit: The part I can't figure out, and maybe this is the key, is why I got a "too many pets" message.

To recount, I'd abandoned a wolf that had turned white again. Then, after waiting out a trap timer, I couldn't hit Tame Beast. I had three pets only showing, and yet it said "You have too many pets."

This suggests that the realm server hadn't processed the "abandon" request, whereas your client assumed the pet was gone. This in turn then means that the interesting bits happened when you were taming the wolf you then tried to abandon...

Empy and Anyia are on the right track. The d/c sounds like a coincidence or a side effect, not the cause. This means the tame can be replicated with the correct timing.

The problematic part is the buff disappearing after a death. My suspicion is that this is because the wolf doesn't have the ghost wolf buff at all times. The buff is designed to fall off when the wolf dies. I'm not sure we can get around this mechanic. The oil-stained worgs were intended to keep theirs. This is something completely different. It's a temporary buff, even on the wolves themselves. Although hey, Garwal stayed after dying, right? But that applied to the source mob as well, IIRC...

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind that. I love the appearance because of the appearance--I have 23 other stable slots for pets that don't mind toughing out real fights

The buff has the same name, description and icon, but his respawn time is so damn long that I can't be bothered spam-taming him to find out.

If enough people are interested we might be able to find out, but I've been having trouble even finding him, let alone timing the tame correctly : /

Well, chances are, it's the same thing and so, he'll most likely revert to normal upon dying. That would put us back to square one in terms of really keeping it, short of keeping the wolf for major city use only. >_<

So I've been trying this for a while now...

- trap the wolf
- drop explosive trap just far enough that it doesn't trigger right away
- wait...
- when the trap's timer hits around 8.3 seconds, hit Tame Beast
- hope for the best :P

I'm doing it without any gear equipped, so my tame is exactly 10 seconds. So far I've gotten the two transforms and golden glow to pretty much 0.1 seconds apart from each other - now it's just about getting lucky.

I'm sorry, I hate to be Ms Negative, but...
I've been thinking about this and I think it's a bug and will be fixed soon and there will be no way we could tame a wolf with this skin ever again.
They made Karoma use this skin. A Spirit Beast. They're supposed to be unique-looking pets.

If you guys figure out how to reliably do this and make the wolf stay that way, that'll be great,of course, and I'll be happy, but right now I think it's a bug.

I'm in the same boat as Golden. No luck so far.

There also could have been server lag involved that caused a, ahem, glitch in the matrix that delayed the buff being placed on the wolf. Unfortunately I can't duplicate that, of course.

As it is, yes, it makes perfect sense for the buff to go away after death and I have no expectations to get the ghostwolf as pet to be used in battle. As I said, I already have one, but my wife would like one for "show and tell."

Even if it is a bug, I don't think Blizz would waste much time in trying to fix it. They never truly 'fixed' the old serpent pets that were unintended and ended up being "just for show." With the new expansion this is the last thing I want them working on ... not because my wife wants that wolf, but because there are far more important things the programmers should be working on and if the pet dies it fixes itself.

They wouldn't fix it because of the new Spirit Beast of the same skin ... if they were worried about that, then they would have deleted my Grimtotem spirit wolf.

I'm gonna have to say.....this is NOT possible. You got a glitch and you proved blizzard made sure we couldnt do it like the oil stained wolves cause their buff falls off at death and is gone forever.

Hmm, come to think of it, this sounds vaguely similar to something that happened back when I first got on a few days after 4.0.1, when pets were disappearing from stable slots.
I tamed a chimaera from Wintergrasp, and went to stable the beast. It wasn't in my pet slot, despite the fact that the creature was hovering right next to me. So, I abandoned my chimaera, and tamed a new one. No problem with this one.
Later, I went to a stable master, and discovered that I had two chimaeras. The first chimaera that I had abandoned because it didn't seem to exist was there, along with the replacement I had tamed. I took out one and abandoned it, and that was that.

Sounds like a similar thing happened to you, except the glitch was enough to crash the game. Whether or not this was the enabling factor for your pet to retain the buff is a different matter. Given Ryai's results that were posted as I was typing, I suspect this to be the case

Completely unrelated to thread, but where did you actually tame the chimera? Winterspring? Wintergrasp has no tameable anything at all in it.

Funny, but thats the way I got oilied wolf last night. 3 pets in stable, error "too many pets", log off, log back in - and here we go, got it.
