I had already tamed the Lone Hunter without his sword, and of course the thought crossed my mind "Would be funny if you could tame him with the sword in..."

Yah, had tried it--the buff timer persists after the tame, so it'll fade after the 10-15 minutes.

Got a question about the arena jig. I assume the pet's "buff" will be wiped if it is out, but what if it is in the stable or not the currently active pet. Does it stay?

Kurasu wrote:Now that the 'exploit' worry has been spoken of, I'm going to add my own to the mix: The Flaming Boars, I have noticed (at least with my Luau) run faster than average pets. Because of the boar's dashing hither and yon, it is given a speed increase while burning. Which at least for my boar, stayed when it was tamed. I was trying to figure how I could say this without mentioning it to the board at large, as I didn't want it to end up being used as an exploit.
I love my burning pig, but the fast running was a worry.
We tested this with the fire boar and my cat.
They ran exactly the same speed as long as they were both spec into Boar's Speed.

Re: How To: Tame Pets With Appearance Buffs
Anyone find a good way to do the Oil-Stained Wolf as Horde using these tricks? It's hard to time a Serpent Sting death when the Serpent Sting itself doesn't kill the wolf (similar method to the Oil-Stained Hawk tame but the wolf has more HP). I've been trying to shoot the wolf a few times before I apply SS and try it that way but it feels like a 1 in 500 shot to get the timing perfect.
The Oil-Stained Wolves have HPs varying between 8982 and 9291. With my gear on the 8982HP wolves: 5 Serpent Sting crits bring the wolf down to 23%, and 5 regular Serpent Sting hits brings the wolf down to 51%

All of this would have eventually been discovered anyway, so don't worry about that part of it. We'll see what Blizz does. (And hopefully, said fix allows for the non-exploitable looks to be made available permanently....somehow.)

I still suggest for you to check all the instances for pet, we havent checked those yet.
Re: How To: Tame Pets With Appearance Buffs
Ok lets look at this from a "What has Blizz done in the past" perspective.Rikaku wrote: <snip>
I do feel there is something to lose though I suppose as to me this seems more like an exploit then a "bug" like taming Garwal or just haste-gemming til you can tame instantly fast like the Ghost Wolf. You're essentially taking advantage of Blizzard's coding which intends for these pets to be "wiped clean" of their buffs upon taming (which is why they can't die, or they lose the buff), by using abandon and logging out and whatnot.
And the fact that some of them can easily be exploited by the ill-intentioned doesn't bode well.
<snip>
During BC a few Hunters Started showing up with a Wolf that looked like it was from SFK. (I was one of them) Soon there was a How to thread. Blizzards reaction was to congratulate the Hunter community for "innovatively using in game mechanics to tame new and normally untamable pets." They also said it would stay in the game. Then came the Shami tree redue, they get to summon not one but TWO Feral Spirits to defend them. Ninja Hot fix because "We talked about it and hunters having this type of pet is just not in the spirit of being a hunter. However we will allow the hunters that have tamed this pet to keep it. But it will no longer be tamable in game." Wow... no warning, going back on thier word...but letting people keep it? What message did that send to the hunter coummunity?
In LK there were rumors of a hunter that has a Worgen pet. He raids with it, it has wolf skills. How did he do it? WHAM some other hunter posted a how to vid. Blizzards reaction was to nerf it as soon as possible. The reason being Cata and the fact that "we did not want hunters to have tamed a playable race" just like how they don’t have pets that look just like Druid forums...much to our dismay.
Now we have this...is it a game changer like the Worgen? No, is it purely for looks? In some cases...yes.
As a former Star Wars Galaxies player I enjoyed the "Thrill of the hunt." It was dangerous business to get some pets DNA. Kimos, Rancors and Slice Hounds come to mind. It was the reason I wanted to be a hunter in WoW. It combined my two favorite SWG classes (CH/BH) in to a viable PvP class.
So how do we as the Hunter Community help prevent a Garwal type reaction from Blizzard? I say we post on to forums to FIX the pets with the damage debuffs that persist after the tame. But request they leave the others alone.
How to fix one and not the other? Make all the pets that have the damage buffs untamable and removed from the stables of the hunters that have done it.
We can point out a problem and suggest a solution to fix the problem without causing wide spread, over-reaching consequences.
Just my 99 cents worth.

Re: How To: Tame Pets With Appearance Buffs
You can tame Spiteflayer in Blasted Lands with Feltaint, (and it looks really cool coming from a yellow and black bird) but just like the Tainted Beasts, it's a buff, and shouldn't be used.
On that note, the only thing that concerns me if Blizzard just up and removes from stables or makes untameable any of the ones with buffs... I have a normal (nonbuffed) Spiteflayer (so I won't be keeping this one), and I'd terribly hate to lose him, given his unique skin and how it took me awhile to get him.

Re: How To: Tame Pets With Appearance Buffs
I'd think that the "solution" would probably be for them to wipe all pet buffs arena-style upon logging/dismissing pets. It's probably the end result of this all.
It'd be nice if they also added some cosmetic sparklies to some examples of existing pets after realizing this is something we love, though

That was not the solution for the original Hunter "WTF" tame nor many of the other "WTF" tamesAcherontia wrote:I'd think that the "solution" would probably be for them to wipe all pet buffs arena-style upon logging/dismissing pets. It's probably the end result of this all.
<snip>
ZG Serpents (you could not feed them but you could take them to BGs for happiness)
Spirit Guide Wolf (lived for 8 sec)
Basin Croc, Hydra and Slime (Two are not tameable in any form but were left in our stables)
Now all of these pets...ALOT of them
The only one that was changed in-mass was Garwal. Tamed in a Humanoid form. One that is it. Unless I missed others while on deployment.
I dont think it will get nerfed. _IF_ we are proactive about getting the pets with damage dealing buffs untameable.
Perhaps I am just being overly optimistic.

And if they weren't specced into boar's speed? *That's* where I was finding it. My unspecced boar was running like 'zoom'. Or at least it sure looked like it to me. Noticably faster than other pets had been. It wasn't *until* I gave it Boar's Speed (ironically enough) that its speed equalized.Mezasu wrote: They ran exactly the same speed as long as they were both spec into Boar's Speed.
Come see Kurasu's stables!

Re: How To: Tame Pets With Appearance Buffs
Yup, I think it's more fun to have discoveries like this. Sure they may be taken away, but I always keep that in mind and just enjoy them while they're here. ^^ If we get to keep some of them, then it's a bonus.Worba wrote:Yeah, and Griffley could have kept it to himself, which would have deprived you of the inspiration to come up with your own finds (and the oil wolf tamer in turn could have done the same thing, thus depriving Griffley of his inspiration), etc etc - generally each new find is built on a previous one, so keeping the flow going (as you and Griffley have) is the best course for everyone...
As for nerfs... they're always going to happen. After all, the flipside of having Mr Lurker here to notice our wishlist items is ofc that he also sees the stuff on our "naughty list"...
This too! :3Kalliope wrote:All of this would have eventually been discovered anyway, so don't worry about that part of it. We'll see what Blizz does. (And hopefully, said fix allows for the non-exploitable looks to be made available permanently....somehow.)

We tested again without boar's speed on the boar. My cat had boar's speed (thinking they would be the same) and it was much faster.
Maybe I should test it against a different pet?
I think I know what might have happened (theory):
Did you tame the boar while it was ice trapped? We never gave the boar a chance to catch fire and run around like crazy. Maybe this one didn't retain its speed buff while running around but yours did.
