Heuristic wrote:Pent, I'm not sure what you're experiencing. Tame Beast should be "close to" 10sec, but certainly not exactly if you have any haste at all. Are you using a castbar mod that can show you channeling times to one or two decimal places? That number should change. When you punch your macro and have a crazy amount of haste, your cast should finish partway through. If those aren't happening, I'm not going to say "ur doin it wrong", but something somewhere isn't as it should be.
Nope, no mod. But tomorrow evening I am just going to test it out again while looking at what my actual Tame Beast tooltip says the cast should be.

I would have done it tonight, but I have been running around leveling my Chromaggus and Krush up and getting new non-combat pets for my achievement/mount/companion grabbing DK.
Messed around with this tonight. I found out with me having about 19.75% haste on my gear and using a Potion of Speed cuts my 10sec tame down to about 7sec long. (Used the stopwatch) Which means that that was a 7sec cast while having close to 35% haste.

Adding Ancient Hysteria into the mix would add another 30% to that making it around 65% total haste... which would be 4-5sec tame beast.

I had the disappearing cast bar (when it was about 50% done) and instant tame on Princess Huhuran last night while in a raid group.

My cast bar did not disappear tonight when I went in to solo tame the Blue Dragonhawk inside Sunwell Plateau, but the cast was very fast and if I was to guess (since I actually lived through the tame only to die about 3sec later)... the tame was between 4-5sec.

No clue why my cast bar would disappear during the wasp tame and not during the dragonhawk tame... I wonder if it has anything to do with a shaman casting Earth Shield on me during the Princess tame....

Thanks for the feedback.

I've prepared afew stuff (for solo tame):

* A gear set with 36k hp and extra haste (Battlemaster's Vivacity +128 haste, Herkuml War Token + 153 haste)
* Runescroll of Fortitude (+132 stamina)
* Lesser Flask of Resistance (+50 res)
* Imperial Manta Steak (+40 sta + 40 haste)
* Drums of Forgotten Kings (+4% stamina, +52 res)

which would probably result in around 40k hp, 25% haste, 102 res

A little change of tactics:
* Use Hero / use haste potion / use Battlemaster's Vivacity (+4k hp)
* Attack with hound
* Dismiss pet (after first cast)
* this is the change - Use Detterance
* start tame (should not be more than 5 sec)

I wonder if the Detterance would reflect the cast, but in any case it's worth the try (btw, you can tame while in detterance, checked).

get a druid to cast mark of the wild on you and have a shaman with resist totem and spell haste totem (just may work) or pally with resist aura grouped with you for extra resists

As mentioned before... Deterrence does not block or parry anything when you are channeling Tame Beast.

I had it in my macro right before /cast Tame Beast... I saw Deterrence take effect and then a split second later I saw Tame Beast override it.... and I started to get hit. (This was during the Blue Dragonhawk tame)

I am not sure if this has been mentioned or not... but is Terropene's fire ray a spell based attack... or physical? Can it be silenced?

I was looking around Hyjal on live using my shaman's Far Sight, and noticed that Terrorpene was already visible, swimming around in the lava pools in the southern part of the zone as usual.

It made me sad, since I know there's no way I can get to 81 before some random person spots it and kills it expecting some kind of awesome loot.

How about http://www.wowhead.com/spell=34490/silencing-shot to delay the casting of that ray for 3 seconds? Is that viable at all, fellow Petopians?

If this works and you can get your tamed beast cast time to actually be 4-5 seconds then it would be easy to tame him. Send in the core hound, use it's ability, drink your potion, dismiss the pet, pop deterrence, start your tame. Deterrence will give you 4.5 sec of invulnerability while you're taming. Regardless of gear you should be able to survive the last second of his dmg for the tame.

I know that deterrence + taming worked after 4.0.1 but I haven't checked it after the shattering, I'm guessing it still works though.

*********

Just saw the posts that deterrence no longer deflects when you start tame. If that is the case, does anyone know if abilities like scatter shot, scare beast, wyvern sting work on him?

iirc the beta testers tried all of that, but no dice - Terrorpene is apparently very bosslike in re: resisting stuns / interrupts / etc.

There appear to be only two bright notes for hunters wishing to tame him at lvl 81, both brought up by other posters (don't recall who);

1) Grounded Plasma Shield. If it doesn't malfunction, will absorb 16.2k-19.8k dmg; most if not all of the lvl 81 "success stories" I can recall cited that as their winning strategy.

2) The spell description of Burning Hatred states that "Fire resistance gains quadruple effectiveness against this attack"; in theory then, you could keep an /equipset of fire prot/sta/haste gear in your bags, loaded up with various fire protection chants / glyphs / inscriptions / kits / etc, switch it on as you approach TP, and potentially see a large reduction in dmg right there.

I doubt Scatter Shot would help. Scatter slows them on their way to melee range, but Terropene's deadly attack is a ranged one.

***

I really think the best strategy for soloing this is to get 100-150 fire resist. The leatherworking enchant is a good one, and there are other options out there. With a chunk of FR, the tame should really be manageable.

I still think the challenge will be to actually find the mob alive. Personally, I'm doing the midnight PST thing and racing to lvl81 in Hyjal. Hopefully my chances are good if I can get ahead of the largest mass of players.

This post got long and technical. The TLDR version:

If you have 30k HP and use Potion of Speed and a Core Hound to Ancient Hysteria, you will need at least 130 fire resist to complete the tame. I suggest Drums of Forgotten Kings, Lesser Flask of Resistance, Arcanum of the Flame's Soul, and Enchant Cloak -Superior Fire Resistance for a total of 147 fire resistance. This will let you (probably) tame Terrorpene and expect to survive with ~2k hp to spare. It's close, and there's some RNG, but this is a worst case estimate.

Full Version

I decided to start crunching some numbers. I have a high-stam set for extreme soloing. Mostly it's high-ilvl (277/264) gear gemmed and enchanted with stam, which brings me up to 42.7k hp. Plus Heroic Satrina's Impeding Scarab (5186hp) and Corroded Skeleton Key (6300 absorb), I can reach an effective hp of 54.1k. Using Ancient Hysteria and a Potion of Speed in this gearset (which has barely 11% haste), my Tame Beast time is 5.4sec, tested in-game with a good castbar mod (cast was ~11sec long, finished exactly halfway through at 5.4sec remaining). This means that worst case, I would have to survive 6sec of nasty nasty fire, or 60k damage. Without any fire resist, I wouldn't cut it, let alone those without a dedicated high stamina set.

So the question becomes, how much fire resistance do you need to survive?

So let's make some assumptions. Let's say 30k hp and 10% haste is within reach everyone, and that you're going to use an Ancient Hysteria and a Potion of Speed for a Tame beast time of <6sec. Terropene will do 60k fire damage to you on average. You need to mitigate half of that.

Using the formula Nightsights dug up, "Damage reduction percentage = 100% * effective resistance rating / ( K + effective resistance rating )". Because Terropene is a lvl81 mob, let's assume the worst case that his K value is that of lvl83 bosses, 510. Since you'll be taming him at lvl81 and he probably has no spell penetration "effective resistance rating" is your character sheet resistance. Finally, we'll assume that he your resistance is actually quadrupled against his spell, as per the Wowhead description.

So 50%=100%*(4*resistance/(510+4*resistance)), solves to resistance=127.5. So you need 130 fire resistance, minimum. That's doable. Drums and a Flask would put you at 102. The Kirin Tor sell a 25 fire resist/30stam head enchant, and there's a 20 fire resist cloak enchant. Bam, 147FR. Leatherworkers can also add a 70 fire resist fur lining.

Also note that the formula for damage reduction is an average. There is still RNG involved, but because fire resists partially, it should be fairly close. Don't blame me if you die on the very last tick with a fraction of a second to go on the tame. You should probably build yourself a hp buffer just in case.

If you want to know exactly how much damage you will take, we can calculate it as a function of resistance: D(r)=60000*(1-4*r/(4*r+510)) Just plug in your resistance for R, and out spits the damage you can expect to have to take.

For those of you who would prefer a table:

FR ----- Expected Damage
0 ------ 60k
25 ----- 50.2k
50 ----- 43.1k
75 ----- 37.8k
100 ---- 33.6k
125 ---- 30.3k
150 ---- 27.6k
175 ---- 25.3k
200 ---- 23.4k

There you have it. Use of Fire Resistance for Terrorpene taming at lvl81, all wrapped up. Any questions?

Thanks for all the feed back, I've just got him. Bought the game yesterday at midnight and started questing this morning (day off ;-) ).

When I reached 81 I kinda went to check the area every hour or so. At the moment I reached 82 I went to check again, and there he was :D

Image

So best advice is fire protection (didnt use deterence or pet).

Edit: Called him Inferno

Anyone tried this sequence of events?
  1. Pots & buffs
  2. Ancient Hysteria with the /PetAbandon script in a macro
  3. Summon Spirit Beast
  4. Spirit Mend yourself and Dismiss pet; can probably be done with the same macro
  5. Tame Beast
Counting the time spent casting Dismiss Pet, you will only miss out on the up-front healing and first tick of the HoT on Spirit Mend. Granted, this involves you actually having a Spirit Beast to begin with, which isn't a given.

Just tamed him at 12:10pm after 11 hours camping
When he spawned I tried to tame him right off but he hit with a fire beam that killed me in three shots. I then logged my pally in on my second account joined party with him and gave myself resistance aura that mitigates fire damage and might. Tried taming again and it worked he hit me a ton but knocked my health down by 3/4. I was in the red but still alive. I don't have special fire resist gear or anything just my pally's two buffs. Anyway he's a lot of eyecandy in ultra video mode. I love him. BTW he spawned on the eastern tip of the lava pool in front of Sulfuron Spire. Then he tracks all around the lower pool. But camp the east near a lava giant there.

or ...

1. Scare Beast
2. Tame Beast

If it runs out of range, FD and Repeat. You can use Frost Trap to slow him down if you want.

I did it solo. Technically.

I dualboxed with my GF's shaman and used her for earth shield, resistance totem, and bloodlust. :p

I didn't find Terrorpene until after I reached 85, but it turns out my above math worked out fairly well. I did the tame solo with ~100k hp and 192FR, used Ancient Hysteria, and ended the tame with ~90k hp. Granted, being four levels higher than the mob certainly helped my chance to resist, but the FR gear made the actual tame trivial.

So, get some caffeine, camp out all night, and have your resist gear. He's one beautiful pet.

This strategy isn't a solo tactic, but does work in a pinch.

Yesterday, while questing on my Mage, I came across Terrorpene. Unfortunately, the hunter I found to tame him was not prepared with any haste buffs or core hounds, and died within seconds of attempting the tame. After a few more failed attempts, I was able to help by initially pulling Terrorpene with my Counter Spell. My Counter Spell is specced for 4 seconds of silence, which was just enough to get the tame off in time.

So, If you find that you can't reduce the cast time of your tame enough, Silencing Terrorpene can buy you a few Nuke free seconds.
