Sambas - to have or to have not

Unread post by Jin »

To be completely honest I'm very split over him. Sometimes I think he looks great and feel the need to check if he is up. Sometimes it strikes me that his eyes look so eerie and the mouth looks weird and I haven't really had a cat since back in vanilla when I did pvp-ranks and BT was a must.

Sometimes I see a screenshot with a tauren owner in a horde location and it looks ok. Sometimes it feels like "why the hell am I gonna go chase after that silly alliance-thingy?".

To those that have him tamed, does his mouth always stay open? It looks bit weird on screenshots, how does he look alive? Does he got much personality? :) Does he go well with horde? Should I spend a lot of effort to try him?

Help a fellow hunter out here please! :)

(I'm a female troll btw and I always wear a red and yellow tabard)

Hi there. :D

I was very lucky and managed to grab Sambas last night with very little hunting and no tame difficulties, so hopefully I can help you one way or the other :) If anything, even if you remain uncertain, perhaps pop off to THL early morning or late night. I'd definitely recommend going after him sooner rather than later though before everyone hits 85 and THL becomes the new Sholazar.

I personally like cats in general as I find they have enough movement to look alive without being bothersome or annoying from constantly catching your eye (like Silthids who I love! but they jump around a lot, lol). One thing I *adore* about Sambas is that he doesn't have the yawn/roar sound my other kitties have. The cats tend to open and close their mouth, not hold it permanently open, and I'm pretty sure Sambas is the same there. If he isn't I haven't personally noticed anything annoying, but having said that I'm a huge cat fan. xD

He has a similar personality to any cat (again, as a cat person, my cats have very varying personalities etc) though not as much as perhaps a wolf or silthid again purely because cats in general don't have such active animations hehe. He strikes me as very loyal, intelligent and brave. The whole Aslan lion thing.

Personally I find him very handsome and I think he'd look fine with a hordie, and I'm sure he'd match your attire hehe.

Perhaps go tame a Barrens lion and see how that one looks next to your character... they're not the same, Sambas is of course darker and more heavily maned, but it could give you a good idea of how he might look.

I absolutely love Sambas (or TomParis, as my Star Trek theme name!). He's just beautiful and honestly every time I see him I wish I could give him a real hug!

I didn't really want him at first, since there was so many other pets I wanted, and figured I would get the mount eventually anyway. Also wasn't sure if I liked his look fully. I kinda started to want him the more I saw him, and when I quested in Uldum and saw him in person as an NPC pet, I fell in love. Now that I have him I know I made the right choice! He's regal and just amazing. I say if you are truly unsure, just do fly bys and don't camp. If you look at him in Uldum, you can get a feel for him too, and decide whether you wanna try him. His regal authority he seems to command would befit any race I think! :)

When you start Uldum you get trapped in a cage. You free a prince and when you meet up with him at his place, he has the Samba model lion next to him. Check it out :)

He's gorgeous and I do recommend getting him before there are too many people after him. I got mine last night after stalking for a few hours alongside about 10 other hunters.

Or if you want another cat instead, the hunched orange tigers in the Uldam instance are gorgeous and have these glittering streaks on them.

I always log off my hunter at a rare tame spawn point, and was lucky enough this time to log out at the exact right spot that Sambas spawn at. So 5 seconds after I logged in NPCScan went off and I was able to get him.

Some people don't really like the model, whether it be the mouth or the giant mane, but those are pretty much the reasons I love him. He's just a elegant looking pet.

Did someone say Star Trek?!
Personally I think all cats should be called Spock, because cats are also logical and have pointy ears, but it's a reserved name. :(

Ahahah, ok, back on topic.
I have same issue with Sambas. One day I absolutely hate his looks, next day I want him so much. Still unsure if I'll tame him. Probably will just for kicks if I ever stumble upon him, or just to complete the collection. For now, i'll stay ambivalent, however, since I didn't even start levelling my hunter.

Have! I dropped my Terrorpene camping to go set up camp for Sambas when I heard he could be tamed. Got him this morning!

Anyone else hoping for him to be a bit larger than he is?

Kind of disappointed at his size, when tamed he turned out to be the same size as my Lynx.

Still a cool pet, just that his size seems a bit wrong.

Great name ..

Tom Paris is my favorite Star Trek character. :)

Oh, and I'll be taming him, most definitely. I plan to name him Shadow after a cat I raised from the point where he was 4 weeks old to 15 years old and 4 weeks old (lost him to Cancer this April 4th.)

Have!

Thanks for all the advice and help guys! I headed out to Uldum to look at the NPC's pet and it sure looks impressive. I decide I wanna try him at least so I go camp. The place is heavily farmed and I think I'm too late, too many has already gotten high enough level to turn this into the same pure hell like my Krush-camp was. I have a hard time deciding if I wanna alert people of his existence or not but I come to the conclusion that the second someone sees him he will be dead and that having a couple actually searching for him to sell him will probably do more good than bad so I make a macro where I offer a money-reward to the one letting me tame him.

I circle the sub-zone for hours and hours, and its heavily camped, farmed, quested and really, my hopes are low. I get the usual dumbass replies to the macros but no one tells me they have found him. I'm getting tired and very. very bored. Then WHAM - the NPC-scanner goes off. I expect to see him dead or named Ipwnyulol when i klick the target window but he isn't! Now only problem is I can't find him. I just spin around like mad and can't see him until I get the genious idea that "hey, track beast maybe?" and there he is in all his weird glory. I swoop down, hit tame and he is mine. Seconds later a mage comes running past me. Whew.

Now, I still don't know what I think of him. He does look weird. He also look massive and solid somehow, like he is a very powerful guardian. I will have to hunt with him before I know what to think and right now I have work to do IRL but later tonight we will hunt!

I have this weird feeling. Last time I hunted with a cat was indeed when I did PvP with my troll but it wasn't the only time. Ages ago, when WoW was released my very first char was a Night Elf huntress (played with IRL-friends that absolutely wanted to play Alliance, and she had Humar and they went through so much together. He was more than a pet to her, he was a friend (I know it's silly). After that I've had many pets I liked but never any that meant that much. This one however feels right somehow. I don't know. Time will tell. I think I will do some play with words or similar to name him to something with similar meaning.

Sambas was in my "get" list right next to Terrorpene.
Luckily, I found mine on a prime time Sunday afternoon so I was quite surprised.

His mouth is bit opened like other cats and he looks very fluffy/soft.
For some reason I can't hear his yawning sound like other cats.

As for Star Trek- my husband got me into it. I refused to watch it as a kid because of a babysitter I had that I hated- she loved it, so I didn't want to watch it because I didn't want to have anything in common with her hahaha. We now own all of TNG, DS9, and Seasons 1-5 of Voyager. Going to finish getting Voyager then move onto TOS. I love Tom Paris and the name definitely seemed to fit Sambas! Glad to know there are some other Trekkie hunters out there!

Similarly, I got Ghostcrawler this morning and named him Roddenberry. I'm going to be naming Karoma "Neelix" if I can find her!

I thought it'd be a fitting tribute to him because Simbas is a lion, king of beasts, and Shadow was the King of my heart for 15 years.

You need a Q and Janeway .. :)

Thank you for the affection that I lost Shady, he meant the world to me. His "replacement" is sleeping on my stomach at the moment.

Bah, B'lanna was always better then Tom! I didn't like the rewrite/remake that they did with Tom between TNG and Voyager. Always was a bit confusing on how they handled that. And Ro Lauren was good character too, though she wasn't that well known. I just like the Maquee and ladies with a chip on their shoulders I guess. :P And now I want to dig out my Voyager DVDs and watch it all over again.

*shrug*

On Sambas-he is a gorgeous kitty. I didn't really notice the open mouth till it was pointed out here. Its slightly disturbing, but I'm not always looking at his face you know, usually I'm looking at him and my toon from behind, and that big fluffy mane is a love. :)
