TLPD Camping

Unread post by Gumballs »

So I decided that I'm not leaving Storm Peaks on my warrior (who is my mount collector, 118 and counting) until I get the Time Lost Proto Drake. I then broke that promise to myself and leveled to 82, but now I'm back there.

Been sitting there for a few days now, no sightings of any rares. I've been at my boyfriends house and today I finally came home. Instead of setting my computer up I went and got some chili first. Log onto my warrior after a few minutes, fly around storm peaks. I get to the Engine of the Makers and OMFGWHATWHATWHATTLPDWHAT. NPCscan goes nuts and I have a fucking heart attack.

And there it is, dead. Sigh.

Image

Well, thanks for that kick to my metaphorical balls RNG gods. Miss my damn mount because of chili.

So, I've heard 6-8 hour respawn time for Vyragosa so I'm going to start setting my alarm in hopes that the Proto will be up instead. Does anyone have any tips for camping the proto, or any experiences?

I feel your pain, i was on skype with a friend of mine a fellow hunter i might add :headbang: and he was helping me camp TLPD when i wanted a brief break to do a little mining or just log off for 30 minutes for a break, Well suddenly he screamed over the microphone "HE'S HERE GET ON QUICK!!! HE'S HERE HE'S HERE" i knew he was telling the truth cos i heard his Npc scanner going beserk so i logged on and just as i hit the enter button on the char select screen to log Xcturnus "Rob i'm sorry he's just this second been killed :(" at that point i felt horrible my heart dropped.

Download overlay, come back in a few hours and fly around his spawn points/patrol routes. I've not seen Time-Lost for a while, but have spotted Vyragosa millions of times. It's just a simple case of being in the right place at the right time, as I'm sure you've gathered.

If you need to work on other things, I'd suggest parking your character in an area where several of his paths overlap and leave NPCscan running. The bridge by Bor's Breath is meant to be a good place! I sometimes sit by the engine which is definately one of his spawn points. I've had Vyragosa appear directly in front of me a few times over the course of WotLK.

Hope you get him next time, it really is a matter of luck. :( Things always spawn when you're not paying attention!

heres my thread, I made a promise to not level until I nab TLPD myself as well :) Took me about a week and a half but in the end it was totally worth it.

http://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=7343

http://www.tlpdresource.com/ is a great website to look at. Ponderance from Area 52 has done incredible work figuring out more about TLPD.

If you read my thread you'll see that I became good friends with Vyragosa. I killed Vyra 10 times before I even saw TLPD. According to Ponderance, if you're by yourself the best bet is to park yourself over the Frozen Lake. Don't path, dont move, just sit there. What I did is have NPCSCAN and SD running and then I would then go play with my kids, do dinner, or whatever. After a while my wife started getting annoyed that the constant flapping noise my flying mount would make...

But yeah, right on the Frozen Lake is a confirmed Spawn point. I had Vyragosa spawn ontop of me 3 times (NPCSCAN would go off even before Vyra would appear).

Usually in the early mornings too Storm Peaks is entirely empty. Keep yourself parked at the frozen lake because you will cover 3 of the 4 spawn points, then maybe have a 2nd character or a friend cover Brunnhildar village (thats where the other one is, look at that website).

My TLPD kill happened to be a Ulduar spawn point that made it all the way down to frozen lake. :) Thank goodness for most people wanting to play this expansion right now. Perfect timing for it.

~~~~~~~~~~
One thing as well, to be safe you would want to be there about 6 hours after the last kill, but that can drive you insane. On the ones that I was able to tell the spawn times, I had one around 7 hours, 2 around 9, and then I think a 11 hour and a 12 hour, and maybe 1 13 hour difference.
Thanks for the tips Royi, :) And thanks to everyone for the encouragement.
Today I camped from about 5:00 pm when I got home from work until now, which is 3:40 am. That's over ten hours straight. I think my eyes are going to start bleeding from staring at the same thing so often, even if I did give my eyes a break every now and then.
I didn't see a single rare. Not Skoll, Dirkee, Vyra, and certainly not the TLPD. I don't know when the last kill of Vyra was, but I was expecting to see something... anything.. in over ten hours.
I guess tonight is a fruitless camp, not even some information to help my hunt. Oh well, what can you do? I want to stay up later, but I'm beginning to fall asleep at the computer. Plus, I have shopping to do tomorrow.
I'm not looking forward to doing this over and over again but I really want this mount!!
Edit: I've been parked up by the Frozen Lake, near that spawn point. I do the occasional circle around though I promised myself I wouldn't. I also have a macro in general advertising that I will pay a sum of gold to anyone who can help me get this mount. Paying 10k gold to keep my sanity and get an awesome protodrake is totally worth it.
I would do that, but my internet is too fail to watch videos. I've just decided to do homework, read, browse the web, draw and talk to people as I camp.
Today I parked myself in Storm Peaks while watching Big Bang Theory on dvd with my boyfriend and drawing. I glanced over at the screen and I see a big ass blue dragon flying by me. Wtf? It was Vyragosa, obviously. but she did NOT set off NPCscan. She was not cached to begin with and she is not cached now, despite me killing her. This makes me nervous for camping the TLPD while not watching the screen in case it happens with him. I've never had NPCscan not pick up an uncached mob before. Should I be worried?
And on that note I finally have a time to go off of! This is my first rare sighting since I made this thread. I spotted Vyragosa 5:02pm my time so in another 3 hours I will begin to camp for its next spawn. :)
I think its still minimally 6 hours between spawns. I heard somewhere about 3, but I have not yet found that to be true (please let us know if you find a Vyra under the 6 hour mark)
Make sure to update your version of NPCSCAN too, I had Vyragosa fly by me once without anything popping as well, made me a bit nervous, then I redownloaded NPCSCAN and it worked fine afterwards. Silverdragon didn't do anything for me either (never does anymore unless you actually "mouse over" the mob).
Oh another question, how do you have NPCSCAN to alert the guildchat?
Yeah I redownloaded NPCscan last night to make sure it works. I camped until the 10 hour mark with no sign before I finally gave up and crashed. This is totally screwing up my sleep schedule haha. I will post if I see or hear anything about spawn times.
Silverdragon is actually what I have to announce it in guild chat. I wish NPCscan had the option since it's more usefull then Silverdragon, but I have both installed due to it. You go into Silverdragons settings, click announce, then scroll down to channel and select guild. It's nice because it will announce to the guild what rare it is and if it is alive or dead.
ahh i wish you luck :) if you can get another one to help you, have them cover the Brunnhildar village spawn (right above the village pretty much) and you cover the frozen lake. If on a low population server (or for that zone which is generally barren right now) you'll have a very high chance at encountering Vyragosa for the Nth time again.
You'll get it :) hang in there
Yeah for now there is anywhere between 1-5 other people in Storm Peaks on Horde side. Many are hunters camping Skoll or people leveling. Occasionally my boyfriend will log on and help me for a little bit but he has a short attention span and has his own things to do. He's great at moral support, especially since Im going back and forth from camping TLPD for hours and logging on my hunter to do a flyby for Madexx every 30 minutes or so. It gets tiring and I'm glad I have his support as well as people here on the forums :)
I feel for you. I've been looking for this guy on and off since Wrath came out, and when Cataclysm came out, I didn't have the expansion for a week, so in that time I decided to look for the proto drake again properly. One of those days I parked myself at Bor's Breath and 5 minutes later, a guildie wrote in the guildchat "Wow I'm so lucky today, first I find Aotona, then TLPD". Turns out, he killed it 2 minutes ago, and right there the corpse was, near K3. So if the drake had flown the other way around, it would have come to me instead. I was very frustrated then, since everyone was having great fun with the expansion, and I made myself sit there in those freezing cold mountains.
Now, a couple of weeks into the expansion, where I was distracted by all the shiny new stuff, I still haven't given up with this drake. I know I could come back in a year, but for some reason I just can't make peace with it. I'm usually camping the afternoons, since I can work on a painting during that time. There aren't many people in the Storm Peaks now, but you still see them fly past every now and then.
Oh well :-)
I wish everyone the best of luck. Have that snowfall lager ready, and pray to the Karma gods for an extra portion of luck.
Good luck on your hunt Samskeyti! I hope you get yours.
Another update from me.. havn't been camping as much as I should, I just needed a break. But today I was afking in Org on my hunter showing off my new pets instead of sitting on Gum, and that cost me the drake. Spawned and killed by Alliance an hour ago. Damn.
At least I have somewhere to start again now.
It'll come to you when you least expect it. I neglected in my own post the story attached to the drake.
Earlier that day I was teasing friends in the Petopians channel how if I found the TLPD after such a long wait, I'd be guaranteed to find Aeonaxx too. (BTW not looked). I figured this would keep me positive. I sit there in one spot camping while I work from home on my work laptop.
A GM contacted me about an open ticket, and we were talking. Sometime later after the problem got resolved, he asked if he could do anything else for me. Like a wiseass, I told him 'Ya. How about a little luck here. It's been a year+ and counting for a certain someone to say hello to me in the Storm Peaks'.
I didn't get a response from him, but before I even closed out of the GM window, the alarm for NPCscan was going off for the TLPD. I nearly had a heart attack. Especially since my computer took that moment to choke and do the hanging lag and drop to 2-3 seconds.
Somehow I managed to chase him down. Somehow I managed to use my macro to dismount-lev and dotted him up with Devouring Plague....
And .. Just to say 'Pff. Not that easy'. The brat of a drake dropped dead.. Yep. Dropped dead and decided to die not just on the SIDE of a mountain, but partially IN the mountain.
Cue me trying to wiggle my way to dismount-lev to auto loot him. Took me nearly 15 minutes of attempts before it finally worked.
The drake has a mean sense of humor.... but he has a pretty (blue! zomg!) mouth.
I'm still on the hunt for mine. So far, lots of Vyragosa's, one to two a day, and as usual for a melee kitty cat like me, I fail big time at getting her down.
So far, it's been extremely quiet in the Storm Peaks, there's at most 5 people of my faction pondering around, and only one serious other camper. Well, serious, twice he appeared and hovered right on top of me on the spot I was in for hours, until I kindly told him there's more chances for both of us if he'd find himself a different spot. The rude answer:"I've never seen you here before and I'm camping wince Wrath came out, so you move". he must have been pretty unsuccessful all that time. Since yesterday, I decided not to stay at Bor's Breath but to set up camp fire at one of his spawn spots. Funnily enough, last night Vyragosa flew right out of it, and the rude guy never even noticed her. But as usual, I was trying to melee her, half falling off my mountainside, unable to charge, and she kept casting her frost attack, until a hunter out of nowhere swept down and killed her.
On the good side, I found Skoll twice yesterday at the spot around the Valkyrion village, and again this morning, and all 3 Skolls now have found a happy hunter.
So maybe Karma comes back in form of a shiny bronze drake? It came back in form of a ghost wolf so far. A guildie asked if anyone wanted Karoma, so I rushed my huntress over and am in love with this somehow strange looking, but lovely spirit beast, I named her Keiga. Sambas and Madexx and a tiny shale spider to accompany my tamed Jadefang aka Arashi to go, but there's plenty of time to get those.
Good luck to everyone else out there; whatever you're after!!
Just a question: Does anyone else have their rare alerts (npcscan, Silver Dragon) not making a noise when game sound is muted? I've checked the box to unmute for npcscan, and in my sound settings, unless I have both sound boxes ticked, I won't hear anything.
Its a recent change. It stinks but you do have to have the game sound on in order for NPCSCAN to alert you with a noise :(
I got my drake!!!
My npcscan picked him up coming around the corner, and I swept down, killed him, and stood there in shock! I'm so happy :-) I expected lots and lots of days waiting, and when it would finally turn up, I saw myself losing it to someone else. But I was the only one in the area. Funnily enough, just as he died, Skoll spawned!
I thought I'd share all the data I had on the past 5 days:
28.12 11:40 Vyragosa (killed)
29.12 04:28 Vyragosa (found body)
30.12 01:13AM/PM can't remember Vyragosa (killed and skinned)
31.12 13:52 Vyragosa (killed and skinned)
01.01 05:46 Vyragosa (killed and skinned)
01.01. 20:22 TLPD!!!!! Mine *insert happy dance*
Oh. I saw 3 Skolls in those days that I rehomed, I killed one this morning (I know, but there was no hunter left and right at such an antisocial time, and I had the vague idea that maybe a drake spawns sooner the less rares there are?) And this last one also got rehomed to a hunter.
Good luck to all of you!! Thanks for the kind words and support. I whispered the rude guy when and where I killed the drake, and he ignored me. Oh well, his loss.
