Viability of Rhinos

Unread post by sargeaw »

i was trying to decide on which pets to pick for Tanking purposes. I really like the look of the Rhinos for once i get fully specd into BM. I have heard mixed feelings about there abilities and effectiveness. Have any of you tried them? What are your thoughts about Rhinos?

I adored my Rhino until they nerfed his Stampede - aka Rhino Bowling. After that it just wasn't the same. :(

I suppose they're just as viable as any Tenacity pet, but I find other species have better racial abilities such as Turtles, Bears, Crocs, etc.

As Veph said, there are many better pets than Rhinos, but really, if you like their looks and can put up with all the stomping, then go for it. They're not all bad, Stampede does cause extra aggro, even tough it was better before.

I Personally love the look of them, I loved them at first sight and have actually started leveling a hunter to simply just tame it. Yes there are other Tenacity pets that have better abilities. But they're awesome and can have a random lil bird perch right on its head!

I had a rhino named "Tenderfoot" for a while. They make excellent tanking pets overall, but they are really large and unwieldy in town. I would LOVE if they could shrink the models down when they are in town or allow them to be insta-dismissed just like they are insta-called. Then a larger pet doesn't block as much of the view. In my opinion, rhinos worse than any other pet for blocking npcs or causing issues in tight spots.

I never noticed the bird, but I know that happens on the NPCs. Is cool if they do that randomly, but not cool enough to snag another rhino pet. Crab and turtles are still my favs.
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

If you really like the rhino, I think you should go for it. No, they don't have as good of a racial as other tank pets, but you should get what you like. That being said, its racial now unfortunately just isn't all that practical. It really only seems to benefit raids, which isn't the best place for a tenacity pet. Not that it can't be done, but there are better options.

Personally, I think you should tame one because you seem to really like them. Hopefully Blizz will realize the err of their way and fix Stampede. :)

Stampede has a really nasty "bug" when your Rhino gets to level 80. While all ranks previous to it have a 1 minute duration on the debuff, the rank you get at 80 only last 12 seconds. Still, I do like mine a lot, as they do have that tank-ish feeling to them. I especially like it when it's just standing in place and within the 25 yard range to use Charge, which causes it to ram into the mob without doing the fast walk animation. :D

The tickbirds in the basin also no longer perch on the horn of the rhino you've tamed after you kill the rhino they were on. The birds now simply despawn.

Thanks for the info. It will be a bit before I can try to tame one anyways. I am trying to level hard and have reached the mid 40's now. I may go with a turtle for now to try to tank some fights. I mostly have used Wolves and cats up till now and after I hit 43 last night I went back to STV and tamed King Bangalash. Hes a nice looking kitty for me to have on my team of pets now. :D
