The Art of the Name
I usually have a mixture of names that are play on words, some are more RP leaning, and others are just names I liked. being here with you guys makes me want to put more thought and personality into it. I even had a story idea of loque and skoll bouncing around my head (no doubt im not the only one).
Below is my list, I would like to hear some of yalls and why you picked that name for that pet.
White undead bear - Zombear (play on words, been my solo/tank pet back when they could swipe)
Oil wolf - Murderspasm (heard Patton Oswalt use it in a joke, thought it fit)
Skeletal bird of prey - Drybones (play off Mario brothers skeletal turtle enemy)
Seagull - Derp (It just... fits lol)
Flaming Boar - Hamageddon (flaming pig death = hamageddon)
Sporebat - Hateseep (I find the idea of such a docile looking creating seeping hared to be incredibly ironic, I couldnt resist)
Sambas - Liam (William is a common name in my family, plus the meaning just fits to well.)
Terrorpene - Bowser (I may change this, I know some here have the name and while I think it fits, I may change it still)
Ancient turtle - TMNTank (my other original tank/solo pet name, along with Zombear)
Rhino - Bulldozer (Closest thing to a bull we can tame, big stimpy thing. Plus I just wanna trick an ally to flag on one of the airships in Icecrown so I can knock him off with this pet... just once!)
Yellow silithid - Fartitude (Placeholder name lol)
Skoll - Flopsweat (I thought it was funny at the time, will be changing)
King Krush - Reptar (from rugrats, i may change this to and come up with something to go with the green raptor)
Fox - Gabriel (seems like an honorable name but still playful, idk just seemed to fit)
Blackblue windserpent - Cobalt (seemed to fit his color)
Green raptor - roflraptor (used this name for my raptor for years but i may change it(
I still need to name: Chrommaggus, Jadefang, vale howler monkey, purple/black ravager, spiteflayer, black madexx, aotona (probably name him cerulean).
You guys got any favorites you wanna share? BTW im sorry if I stole a name you had haha

Re: The Art of the Name
For instance...
Chromaggus - Ike. Why? My brother looked at him and said, "That looks like an 'Ike'." And it stuck.
King Krush - Grace. Same reason as above. Incidentally, I was thinking of the same name at the time.
Madexx - Rockchester. I don't know why, but he looks.. classy to me. So, he deserves a classy name.
Koroma - Korla. She looks old and wise, and I met an old, wise orc at one point named Korla, so...
Ghostcrawler - Devious. "Dev" + the fact that he's a devious little guy, disappearing at will.
Sambas - Russell. I think of fluffiness when I think of that name, and he looks fluffy.
Springpaw Lynx - Tinder. I couldn't think of a name for him for the longest time, but eventually I read the word "tinder" in a magazine and decided that it was perfect.
Emberwing - Lerk. He's one of many Lerks my tauren had. She's a lurker, so "Lerk" seemed like a good name.

Re: The Art of the Name
Brown lynx from Ghostlands - Lolz (my first pet ever)
Humar - Roflz (my true companion and leveling buddy)
Loque - Ohai
Gondria - Kitteh
Skoll - Goggie (that's lolcat for "doggie," in case you didn't know >.<)
Ghostcrawler - QQ
Sambas - Ceilingcat (c'mon, he looks like Aslan, and we all know who Aslan really is)
Rak'shiri - Keyboardcat
Warp stalker tanking pet - Amirite
And then I have a few exceptions to my theme...
Swarming Guardian - Gwyn (after my RL cat, who is also a black kitty. btw, the name means "white")
Karoma - Koda (after my RL dog)
Ghost saber - Spot (after a beloved RL kitty who has passed away)
Arcturis - Lynxr (the name of my feral druid. my favorite response to people who ask "where'd you get that pet?" is "I killed a druid in PvP and now its ghost won't stop haunting me." this was even better before they took away Spirit Beast moonfire.)

Chromaggus is Vlakorados, (a very spiky dragon monster found around bone village, very tough)
Warpchaser is Ironite (a pale hovering dragon type monster)
Terropene is Barret (after the playable caracter, he's a big black guy with a gatling gun grafted on his arm)
Loque was named Ultima (after the powerful Meteria)

Re: The Art of the Name
Seagull - Dai. In Russian, the seagulls in Finding Nemo scream Dai! instead of Mine! I almost used 'Mio' (Spanish) but Dai won.
Devilsaur (King Krush) - Fangedlime. Named for the vicious, horrible beast in Kingdom Of Loathing. Actually it's a Sabre-toothed Lime, but that wouldn't fit.
Turtle (Terrorpene) - Panzer. Named after the German tank. I recycled the name from my original Panzer.
Chimera (The Razza) - Razza. 'nuff said.
Silithid Swarmer - Bandersnitch. I wanted to name him Bandersnatch, but 'Snatch' isn't allowed.
Blue Dragonhawk - Blueskies. Because he was sky-blue. ... not all my names are clever!
Red Hyena (Slaverjaw) - Crusade. My original hyena was from Scarlet Monastery. The new one recieved the same name because he is the 'same hyena'.
Black Warp Stalker - Döden. The name means 'Death' in Swedish.
Black Jormungar - Ebonlocke. The family name of Duskwood's mayor. I quite liked the name, and decided I wanted to use it someday. This is where I finally got the chance (because he's ebon, of course).
Angered Aarakora Protector - Epiphany. An Epiphany is the ultimate moment of perfect realization of something. While the word was stretched, for me, this bird was the culmination of years (literally) of patience and trying to tame it every single patch since I first discovered them (at level 67).
White Fox - Ghost. Again, sometimes my names just aren't that clever!
Crocolisk-hydra - Glitch. Because... well... it was a glitch he could be tamed.
White Worg (Timber) - Goldrinn. Originally I had just named him Timber, but after the Mount Hyjal quests with Goldrinn, the wolf-spirit, I was totally entranced and ended up getting a tag for him.
Princess Huhuran - Huhuran. Because I wanted everyone to recognize her; same as The Razza.
Burning Boar - Luau. A Hawai'ian feast. A whole roasted pig is often served at these, thus the name.
White Serpent - Suresh. One of the epithets for the god, Vishnu, a Hindu god. 'Sur', meaning 'God', and 'Esh', meaning 'King'.
Chromaggus - Suzanoo. The Shinto thunder god. His footfalls always rumble like thunder, and that's what I wanted to name him after.
I have a number of unnamed pets as well: two Spirit Beasts (Arcturis and Karoma), a beetle (Venomous Skitterer), Jadefang the Shale Spider, and Sambas.

Aeon (Karoma) - This little sucker took forever to find. >.>
Ghostcrawler - Kept his original name because I was too lazy to find him a new one. >P

Iolani (Aotona) - Hawaiian for 'bird of heaven'.
Kaholo (Skoll) - Hawaiian for 'nimble, swift'.

Umbra (oil-stained wolf) - Latin for 'shadow'.

Re: The Art of the Name

My hunter's named Problem and was, originally, a fully-white Draenei. I'm so funny, right?

Complication

I was originally planning on having only one pet while levelling. Then I ran into Olm the Wise, and that complicated things - hence the name.
Irritation

From Molten Core. Anybody who played back when MC was current content should remember the irritation of "loot the damn dog already please".

Aggravation

My very first actual tank pet, shortly after WotLK launched. Aggravating mobs while I shoot them from a distance.
Distraction

Named after a tank complained that "that damn bird flapping in my face is distracting".
Chrysaor

The name is originally from Greek myth, but I first used it for a character in a story I wrote who was essentially a malevolent stuffed animal. Seems to suit Chromaggus well enough.
Despair

I've since abandoned this one - he just wasn't clicking with my hunter's personality - but figured I'd mention the name anyway.
Slobber

Also abandoned due to not clicking, despite the fact that he picked a name for himself straight away.
Tethys

Ancient Greek goddess of the world's waters.
Erytheia

"The red one" - one of the Hesperides, the nymphs of the evening.
Boreas

Greek god of the cold north wind.
Spirit

Obvious name is obvious.
Chitter

Originally Yauj Brood, but he wasn't feeling the color. Named for the sound beetles make.
Skitter

This guy was an unfortunate side effect of taming various different beetles to find one that was Chitter. "Hm" thought I innocently "I think Chitter's the light blue, but I like the purple one too..." - and the bastard promptly named himself. What am I meant to do with two beetles?
Scritch

One of those names that "just fit".
Ember

Obvious name is obvious.
Whoops

With the sword. For the obvious reason.

Named Aotona to Cerulethyst (cerulean + amethyst, obvious reasons).
Named Jadefang to Shamrock, I like how it plays on two things (green and rock) but I am not completely satisfied with it.

Re: The Art of the Name
Shiver - Karoma I don't know why on this one, I guess ghostly?

Banshee - Gezzarak Big, dark fierce-looking warpy!
Ochre - Shango (orange saber cat model)--for the color & personality
Talisman - Lord Lakmaeran (blue/white chimaera)
Behemoth - Chromaggus
Styx - Red Hyena; Acherontia Styx is the species name for one of the Death's Head moths. Plus, Styx works

Windbiter - Lupos, White Worg--sounded fierce, wild & whimsical!
Brimstone - Terrorpene, obvious reasons
Chaos - Loque'nahak I wanted that or something stormy, Chaos seemed to fit
Cobalt - blue mage hunter dog
Ghostfire - Gondria
Grim - Old Cliff Jumper
Inferno - flaming battleboar
Snarler - Snarler--need a new name >.>
Snowfeather - Trachela, the white/black-striped carrion bird
Thrakk - Ramparts wolf--"Friend" or "Heroic" as understood by allies from Horde
Valak - King Krush; demon that "reveals the location of hidden serpents" and an homage to the similar name of the player who dropped everything to help me tame
Ruin - black Jormungar worm, previously Grub'thor
Zodiac - Skoll; my stars were aligned that day

Frostfire - Arcturis
Re: The Art of the Name
"Daishar" - (currently Shy-Rotam, was originally Rak'shiri) - "Daishar" means "glory" in Robert Jordan's Old Tongue from the Wheel of Time book series. I think the name suits her.
"Tsorovan" - Loque'nahak - "Storm" in the Old Tongue. It fit better when spirit beasts still had moonfire, but Tsoro likes it, so I'm not going to change it up on him now.

"Emmanuel" - Sambas - I, too, saw the resemblance this lion (or is it Lion?) bears to Aslan. But I didn't want to be quite that obvious, so I went with another name for his allegorical source. It's also in honor of the Christmas season in which I found him and the hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel."
"Atrox" - Sian-Rotam - Panthera leo atrox is the scientific classification of the American cave lion. Hence Atrox for this white lion, which also is a Latin word meaning "horror"...which I imagine you'd feel if getting chewed up by a big angry lion.
"Fearghus" - Winna's Cat - I always wanted this skin, but really didn't want to follow the convention of naming him 'Cringer' after He-Man's cat. I noticed he was white, orange, and green like the flag of Ireland, and found a strong Irish name. Fearghus means "manly, virile"...and the "Fear" in it does amuse me just a tad.
"Thutmose" - Tamed Tol'vir Prowler - Thutmose III was a great Egyptian pharaoh, so I chose his name for this cat from Uldum.
"Banner" - Sunwell Dragonhawk - This pretty blue dragonhawk is named for his species' resemblance to a war banner fluttering in the breeze.
"Clayburn" - Tyrant Devilsaur - Clayburn is named after a cousin of mine who is a stand-up comic. He has a joke he tells that involves his wife telling him he's walking around like a skinny T-rex. When I heard this joke, I knew I had the perfect name for my devilsaur.
"Indigo" - Chasm Stalker - I had always wanted a blue warp stalker, so come Cataclysm, I grabbed one. His name is Indigo...because he is.

"Wedjet" - Ashtail - "Wedjet" is an Egyptian word for 'blue.' I thought it suited this blue-colored fox perfectly.
"Valiant" - Vilebranch Raiding Wolf - Valiant was named for his tenacity and willingness to protect me against hordes of his former brethren immediately after being tamed.
"Elphaba" - King Krush - After nearly a year of searching, I finally got my green devilsaur. Unfortunately, my original plan of having Clayburn undergo a skin shed and turning green fell by the wayside, and so the King of the Basin became a queen so Clayburn could have a girlfriend. Elphaba is the name given to the Wicked Witch of the West in the book and musical "Wicked," so I thought it proper for this big green powerful beauty.
"Chistery" - Vale Howler - Chistery the monkey is another nod to "Wicked." Chistery is the first of the winged monkeys in the musical, and the name was perfect for my little color-changing monkey.
"Cinders" - Vargul Blighthound - Cinders is named after the animate hellhound cloak worn by the Justicar in a series of fantasy books. The blighthounds always looked a lot like hellhounds to me, so the name was perfect.
"Fidget" - Gorisihi Reaver - Anyone who's seen the silithid idle animations understands this bug's name.

"Novus" - Golden Eagle - I originally wanted to name this bird "Nova," after the current War Eagle flying for Auburn University, but for some reason, the name's reserved. So a slight substitution of letters had to be made.
"Oddjob" - Grubthor - I had seen one of these pretty golden worms named 'Goldfinger' before, and liked the reference, but wanted to be a tad more indirect. Not to mention that AoE DPS is a very odd job for a Tenacity pet to have in the first place.

"Houston" - The Kurken - Since the Kurken uses the Omen core hound model, I wanted a name to make reference to the moon. Houston was Mission Control for the Apollo moon mission - and anyone being chewed on by this hound does indeed have a problem.

"Deckard" - Karoma - I hadn't really intended to tame this spirit beast; after all, Tahl had Tsorovan and I was satisfied. But then, fate intervened, and I tamed Karoma to keep it from being killed for the vendor gray item. The only justification I could come up with for Tahlian having such a pet was that it was, actually, a sentient hologram. So I named this pet "Deckard" after the main character in the movie "Blade Runner."
"Lennon" - Turquoise Scarab - Yes, he's named after the Beetle, er, Beatle. I looked at the four skins in the Obelisk of the Stars area, and this was the one I liked the best.
Still unnamed - Crimson Shale Spider. The shale spiders are the only kind of spider that don't make me uncomfortable, so once I get this little beauty out and level it, I'm sure I'll come up with a right and proper name.
Retired - Rak'shiri. I'm hanging on to this cat to see if they change its skin in the next major patch. It was my original Daishar. If I don't like it, I'll get rid of it, but if I do, it will undergo a name change and join Tahl's "pride" of felines under a different identity.

Re: The Art of the Name
Re: The Art of the Name
Barnaby (gray wolf) - First pet ever with a hell of a taming story attached. Oddly, I named him after the dwarf NPC Barnaby I ran across on my (then) main toon who I got attached to.
Bailey (snow leopard) - Cats were (still for some) a very popular choice, so I decided if I got one I was going to tame one that would remind me of where I came from (Dun Morogh). The name I decided to use was in homage to the dwarven bankers after I finally noticed their names which was shortly before the tame.
Boogie (originally a polar bear, now a gray bear) - I wanted a tank pet and thought the bear was most fitting. While waiting on a friend to quest with me in Winterspring, I decided to /dance in the field. While dancing I spotted a bear (first time there) and decided to add him to the family.
Bertille (snowy eagle) - Was itching to add a flyer to the family and spotted this beauty in S.Basin. After tame, I originally wanted to name her Brandy (dwarf = booze) but the name didn't fit for me. After looking through a baby names site I came across Bertille which immediately rang a bell. When I looked it up, one of its meanings were "clever/cunning". Perfect!
Boomer (white corehound puupy) - After having him for a short while, I noticed something immediately. He is very loud. Cute, but loud. Thus Boomer was born.
Boston (black devilsaur) - Was helping a friend tame her devilsaur while speaking to another friend when the topic of me being homesick came up. He suggested to do something to cheer myself up. Saw the black beauty and thought why not.
Ballari (Gondria) - First spirit beast tame. Indian for "Walking Quietly". The most quiet one I have next to Barnaby.
Badru (Skoll) - African for "Born at the full moon". Was the name of my short time worgen pet. Promised I wouldn't use the name again unless I could find another "special" wolf.
Barend (Arcturis) - Dutch for "Brave Bear". The one spirit beast I wanted the most and obtained thanks to the kindness of another hunter who left me to tame him.
Bolivar (Loque'nahak) - Spanish for "Riverbank". After taming Barend, I excitedly told the kind hunter and he invited me to show him in S.Basin. I went to show him the beasts I had so far and he jokingly said all I was missing was Loque. On a whim I decided to swing around to search for King Krush for my friend (she loooves green) and guess who I found? Spawned right as I passing the small river down from the waterfall.
Boaz (Ghamoo'rah) - Hebrew for "Strength". After patch hit and Boogie was looking worse for wear, decided to find a new tank pet. An hour before tame, my mom was watching a movie she insist my brother and I watch and for whatever reason we couldn't stop saying "Boaz". Now I got my freind addicted to the name.
Bisty (Ashtail) - C'mon people! It's a cute widdle fox!
Bjorn (Bjarn) - Scandinavian for "Bear". The understudy for Boogie.
Buoy (seagull) - Hopefully most people will know what I'm talking about, but it's the bobbing thing out in the water you see in beaches and oceans. Such a cutey-pie. When I went to search for him and saw him thought it was a buoy he was circling. I was wrong...
Banhammer (Ghostcrawler) - I ...couldn't....resist!
Banji (Karoma) - African for "Second born of twins". When I tamed her my first thought was "Look Badru, now ya have a little sister!"
Bastien (Sambas) - French for "Venerable, Revered". Yes, I kept thinking of Aslan, but besides it breaking my naming code it oddly didn't fit for me. Also, I kept thinking of Sebastien for some odd reason.

Thanks Striv for the siggy!

Re: The Art of the Name
Æther - Grimtotem Spirit Guide - From the "old days," some old scholars considered Æther to be "subtler than light" and "penetrative and non-material," I thought this a great name for a ghostly pet.
Motoko - Ghost Saber - Playing of the title of the anime "Ghost in the Shell", Motoko is the lead character.
Doppeladler - Blue misty carrion bird - German for "double-eagle", used to describe an eagle with two distinct heads (and usually) necks, fits very well.
Sherman - Bear - Name of a US tank during WWII.
Merkava - Turtle - Name of the main Israeli battle tank, thought the name sounded cool and hadn't heard it before.
Damocles - Lone Hunter, sword and all - From Greek mythology, Damocles was sucking up to Dionysius and said that because Dionysius was surrounded by wealth and power that he was truly fortunate. Knowing that a position of power is not all it is cracked up to be Dionysius offered to switch places with him, which he quickly accepted. He got to sit in the throne surrounded by wealth and power, but Dionysius had set it up so that a sword always hung over his head hung only my a single horse's tail hair. (I also strongly considered Phineas for this pet, which also would have been a strong fit)
Those are my main pets, although I am in the process of at least completing my stable raid-buff-wise so there will be many more names to come.

Re: The Art of the Name
Loque’Nahak: Pride because what else could you name such a powerful and graceful cat?
Ghostcrawler: Citizen Snips after the crab that was on one of the Futurama episodes.
Arcturis: Titus after a Roman General.
Nuramoc: Trakanon after a raid dragon from Everquest.
Terrorpene: Lodizal after another turtle from Everquest that was also highly sought after and camped to death.
Gosh-Hadir: Lockjaw after a named Crocodile that terrorized lower level players in Everquest.
Uhk'loc: Bluebeard because he has a blue face with white fur, so it just seemed to fit well.
Aotona: Seahawk after the Seattle Seahawks.
Ironjaw: Saint after the New Orleans Saints.
King Krush: Yoshí despite the naming filter and because he looks like Yoshi on steroids.
Red Warpstalker: Ðiablo again despite the naming filter, and because he looks like something that crawled out of the 5th level of Hell.
Red Core Hound: Rumble Pup because when I first got him, he literally shook the ground every time he moved.
Red Fox: Firefox because the GM’s wouldn’t let me keep Vixen.
Green Plaguehound: Runt because he’s the runt of all my canines.
Green Cat: Apple Jack because he reminds me of the cereal, and because everyone else named theirs Cringer or Kringer.
Lavender Cat: Leo because that seemed fitting for a cat.
Two-Headed Blue Ghost Vulture: Chicken Hawk after that little guy from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons.
Bluish Purple Raptor: Shredder because he shreds armor.
Purple Hyena: Ripper because he loves to rip tendons.
Brown Ant Silithid: Atom Ant after a cartoon ant.
Blue Dragonhawk: Wrath after the deadly sin.
Blue Helboar: Gluttony after the deadly sin.
Flaming Armored Boar: Barbeque because they wouldn’t let me name him “Stood in the fire” or “Suicide Bomb”.
Green Shale Spider: Malachite because she had green gemstones.
Purple Shale Spider: Amethyst because he has purple gemstones.
