Pets: Still preventing complete wipes for some of your runs?

Unread post by Ryai »

I'm just curious. I finally decided to test the waters and do some dungeons on Rosalyn; I completely avoided them on Yasindra as I leveled her up. Anyways so just a few moments ago, well more than a few. Perhaps 30, I decided to tame an orange Crab;

Best cata crab skin ever :D

Anyways so I decide to power level CrabCake and Sris my red serpent up in a dungeon run as I'm trying for nthe damned trinket [and got it finally lol] from BRC. Everything is going normally and then the tank afks as we get to the second boss. I hang back with Brb'd tank, everyone else loiters to close to the entrance.

So guess who says hi! Yep, that's right, the dragon zealot dude! He starts to wtfpwn all over the place, but i react quickly- pop MD onto CrabCake, have him hurtle to the dragon, start unloading, blow cower and last stand and just pewpew like we have never pewed in all of pewpewing existance. And for the most part CrabCake tanked like a champ.

I also had a more DPS specced Warpstalker [the blue skin whoo <_>] prevent a full wipe when a pat of those elemental dudes decided HEY LETS PULL FRIENDS WHEN WE AGGRO YOU.

just post your stories with or without pictures of said pets here :p as I'm curious about others ohshi moments.

I've seen a worm tank in the very same instance after the original tank disappeared. He wobbled around like a champion indeed, and my boyfriend's priest had no problem keeping him up through the trash while they waited for another tank to que. xD

I've been a dedicated pet tanker for multiple years now. I'm only recently working on getting my tanking suit back together on Kura. A lot of my favorite stories have been 'Oh shit' ones.

Probably my absolute favorite story was when a Sarth 3d 25 man ended up becoming a Sarth 1d 18 man. We didn't have enough people, a lot of people were crabby, and one of our tanks were ill. Attitudes were frayed, people were upset, and the first pull had been ugly and killed a lot of folks. I made some sort of comment (it was intended to be snarky and I fully admit it) about getting out the pet tank, and proceeded to do so, popping into my armor and grabbing out the turtle. The raid leader ,of course ,said it wouldn't be necessary.

Suddenly, the patting giant dragons got a little too close to the raid, spotted someone, and started incoming. Instinctively, I sent the pet at one while the other was tanked by the warrior. A healer tossed heals on my pet (thanks whoever you were!) and we killed the first, turned to the second, and got him down with no loss of aggro from the turtle.

Raid Leader, "Carry on."

And so I did. Through two of the three drakes I MTed the drake while we downed it.

Another time, when the ICC dungeons had first come out, we had our tank disconnect one or two pulls into the first of the three. So again, out came the Panzer, and we proceeded to do two of the new instances with a turtle tank. .... we don't talk about the third one. Ouch. :)

Nope. So far all the notable hunter pet experiences for me have been negative. Aggressive pets, growl on, offtanking next to the healer and so forth.

I also exist on DeviantArt.

I'm still loving my glitched raptor pet. She's out doing tanks in heroics and just beating the tar out of everything. Epic health with massive dps is a beautiful thing. The tank last night couldn't keep up with her and seemingly became upset with me.

This is my glitched girl:

And for those who may be asking to themselves I've reported this glitch /bug to Blizz twice and it's still unfixed. Yay. [/color]

My ghost saber Atalanta off-tanked some trash like a pro last night when our tank d/ced on some trash in Deadmines. This is not unusual; I've had pets do this before. The amazing thing was that she tanked the one I wasn't tanked myself on her own and kept herself healed pretty well (and our healer helped too).

While leveling my tenacity pets, they all ended up doing some tanking/off-tanking at some point. :)

Three instances come to mind.

One was during the Elemental Invasion, where we had to fight the Theradras redux fight. I had out my core hound (it's worth mentioning that my BM spec is tooled towards soloing and PvP than PvE DPS), and our group included a moonkin. So, we start out with the two guards who are rudely blocking our way, as we should. Somehow, Theradras gets pulled at some point, and either she or one of the golems manages to kill our healer before the tank could get everything focused on him. I pop Ancient Hysteria, and the moonkin promptly casts Rebirth on our healer. As our healer was coming back to life, our now hysterical DPS demolishes what's left of the guards. Unfortunately, Theradras manages to demolish our tank before our healer is completely recovered. Since the healer had practically no aggro, and I had just blown all my CDs, my core hound Hooch was next on the threat meters. I quickly activate Growl, have my pet use Cower, and apply Mend Pet. The only tanking talent my pet had was 2/2 Bloodthirsty. As I'm desperately trying to keep Hooch alive, the healer finally catches on and together we are able to keep the core hound alive. Amazingly, threat wasn't an issue, partially thanks to my pet being specced for DPS and the more abundant Killing Streak procs. To everyone's surprise, we down Theradras.

Jump forward to Cataclysm, with me leveling along at a snail pace. I got to 82, and queued for Stonecore because I couldn't wait until 83 for a shale spider. So, after much back-and-forth with the other group members, I finally manage to tame one (I sure was lucky that they were so patient). I talent my new pet to maximize DPS. Being a Tenacity pet, that didn't take too many talents, not counting the fillers. So, I decide that the best idea would be grab Thunderstomp and talent my way into Taunt. I may have put a point or two into Silverback, but I'm not sure. I'm still in the same instance once I finish this. We reach the golem boss (I'm terrible with Cata boss names, and too lazy to look them up), get a brief overview of what to do from an experienced group member, and start. Towards the end, the tank dies. I activate Growl and Thunderstomp, and use Taunt to peel the angry, oversized geode off our healer. We are getting close, but despite my best efforts my pet dies, and we wipe. This process repeats itself a few times, each ending with the death of my shale spider just as the boss is almost finished. The tank finally leaves, and with a fresh replacement, we are able to finish the instance. I came so close so many times to downing that boss with the shale spider that I figured it to be an honorable mention.

Now jump forward to just a few hours ago. I am 84 since I am still leveling like a slug (Almost 85 now!), and doing Halls of Origination. At one point, as we are fighting our way through troggs, the DPS warrior informs us that he needs a bio break. That's perfectly fine by us, but would he please /follow one of the other group members so that he isn't killed by respawns? Nope, he's now AFK, and I dawdled too long and am now cut off from the other group members. So, I back up to the warrior's position, near where we had downed one of the elementals, switch into BM and pull out Chowder, my consumed thistle bear. I was pleasantly surprised that Chowder handled a single patrol that was headed for us with ease. When the warrior returned, we proceeded to try and regroup. Chowder wound up holding off two packs at once, and was hurting. Surprisingly, I managed to stop her health from dropping, and she held them off until the tank, healer, and spriest were able to fight their way to us. So, while not as big of an achievement, I was still impressed by Chowder's performance. Oh, and did I mention that she was still level 82?

On the Crucible of Carnage which I did twice so far to help out guildies, my Terrorpene saved the day both times when the tank went down. So I was pleasantly surprised that pet tanking still works.

While leveling I tend to bring a tanking pet to dungeon pugs. Proved to be a life saver on many occasions...

a number of times in Cata dungeons the various tanks i've run with have dropped like flies and my crab, turtle or beetle have picked up the slack and done a far better job. took a few of the healers a little bit to get the idea of turning all heals to the pet but in the end many a wipe has been prevented.

beetles, turtles and crabs i have to say are fricken outstanding tankers

My DPS spec'd squee spider has saved quite a few runs now, and using my pet as an OT is actually the basis of a strategy my sister came up with for taking Kresh down painlessly. Started with brave little Velketor, but at this point I've tried it with almost everyone including Midna the wolf and Icewind the chimera.
