How to level tenacity pets

Unread post by Xelophant82 »

Was wondering how do I go about this? Bringing them into an instance just doesn't seem like it would be good. Is there another efficient way to gain them levels?

Don't know if you know about the leather farming method in normal City of Tol'vir with the 2 tiger packs to the left and right of the entrance (has been nerfed) but that used to level my pets really really quickly.

Still does in fact, just not quite as profitable :)

I would suggest daily quests. I know the Dragonmaw/Wildhammer ones involve alot of killing, with the attacks back and forth on the ruins of Thundermar. Likely one of the better places for it.

Also, Tol Barad Dailies. Always killing level 85s, so good XP there too.
Skrimir - Level 85, and never did a single Northrend or Cataclysm Quest/Dungeon. Gogo Archaeology!
My Stables - Still trying to find a name for my Raptor, in a Final Fantasy genre-styling.

If an instance is the only way, turn off their growl and thunderstomp (and any other aggro pulling moves) perhaps? Would that keep them from pulling aggro from the tank?

I don't like using anything other then a ferocity type pet in an instance personally. I hate seeing my DPS drop if I am using one of the other types.

Honestly, if you turn off growl and TS and spec them for more of Damage build, they don't do horribly. They still don't compare to Ferocity and Cunning DPS, but won't make or break a group unless there are others lacking. Particularly with some of the buffs/abilities they bring, it may even be worth bringing a DPS specced Ten. pet to a dungeon.

Also would just like to point out that Cunning is rather competitive with Ferocity in terms of dps, so while I understand where your coming from with the Ferocity > than all mindset that Wrath had, at least in terms of DPS, it's no longer true as all pets have the same multipliers the only difference is in talent choice, and from that, Cunning and Ferocity compete strongly and there is no clear-cut victor, while a DPS specced Ten. pet is worth using if the buff is necessary.

Instances or dailies is how I level all pets regardless of what spec they are. =P Instances are the primary way I level them considering they get the first two levels quite fast. It's the 84-85 that seems to take quite a while.

I haven't started dailies on my Hunter yet, been concentrating on my lock more but I will definitely try that out.

Just a thought but do pets get the xp from mining and herbing now? if so then there's another way to do it.

The beach outside of Highbank in Twilight Highlands works really well for tenacity pets. Super fast respawns and lots of friendly guards to weaken them and keep you from aggroing all the mobs. Just watch out for the bombs, they can get you if you stop paying attention.

It's fine to bring them into an instance; obviously you will do less DPS and occasionally run into a "tenacity is for solo lollol!one!!eleven!" knowitall, but OTOH you will make a very nice safety net for times when clothies pull aggro off the tank...

Just to be safe though I would keep a DPS pet in an active stable slot just in case you run into a situation where the group actually needs that last bit of damage output.

Otherwise though it should be fine.

EDIT: regardless of pet, if you are pulling aggro from the tank, then either it's because you're frontloading the DPS or else the tank is just bad - if you give the tank a decent head start, and always target his target, then growl and thunderstomp shouldn't matter.

Yeah I have been telling lately who is geared and who isn't while tanking as I'll pull threat constantly from the tank if they don't know what they are doing or just can't pull enough aggro. I always keep a dps and tank pet with me though in case I need something or other and I also keep 2 more for my BM spec if I decide to change over to that.

I might try pulling one into an instance and see how it goes. I could always try with a guild group even so that I might get more leniency on it.

Mine is not the quickest way, but I've been leveling pets by killing Glopgut ogres in Twilight Highlands. There's a lot of them, they're all 85, and they respawn pretty fast. They drop cloth (been working on my first aid), a green now and then, and there's a few mining nodes that spawn in the area. Watching a movie helps it go by easier.

I typically get my pets to 84, then go quest - I left a lot of zones almost untouched in my leveling to 85. But sometimes I'll just bite the bullet and level them straight through to 85. Because that last level takes so long, I would probably recommend just taking them through some normal instances if you don't like grinding mobs. I don't think many parties complain about what pet you have, unless the group is struggling.

I mostly leveled my tenacity pets via dailies (agree Tol Barad is a great way to go) since that's where I find them most useful but I've never had a problem taking them into instances either, with whatever spec they have. Just turn off thunderclap, growl, etc. Never had any problems, no one's asked why or complained.
