Uldum phased beetle report & phasing taming discussion

The four scarabs that open up for that one phase of the first Harrison Jones questline in Uldum (amethyst, emerald, sapphire, and turquoise) can still be tamed if you know someone on the quest and they aggro one of the scarabs. You pull it off them, tame, bam, insta-scarab.

Thanks muchly to Kordelia for waiting while I quested through the early Uldum quests to unlock the phased scarabs! ^_^

EDIT: So this works if for whatever reason you can't see the scarabs. HOWEVER, you SHOULD still be able to see the scarabs after completing that quest chain if you go back and fly down to the scarabs. You won't be able to see them from near the ceiling, but they should be there.

I just think it's BS that they would phase them out after you do the quest to kill some of them. I really loathe this phasing crap.

I was under the strong impression that these stayed reachable even after you'd completed the quest line. At least that's the case on live - has it changed on the PTR? Initially I thought they'd phase out too, but a kind person here on the forum showed me the error of my thinking a few weeks ago, and I verified it myself (and let my amethyst beetle go since I knew I could get it back later).

I'm not sure what goes into seeing them and not. Kura, after I'd done the quest, couldn't see them for quite a while. After he finished all Uldum's quests, someone mentioned the scarab quest I had missed. When I went back, I could see them. And since then, no sign. So... maybe I got lucky and someone there was just on the right quest level? Or maybe they only stay there until you've done the 'killing' quest?

Makes more sense now... Hunters prospectively wanting to tame one in the future probably shouldn't kill any then Still, interesting to know if you can tame one if someone ELSE is on the quest! Can you test this, Kalliope, with one person who has done it & one who hasn't? I'm wondering if the phasing/taming is affected...

Umm, are you talking about down in the one temple?.. I just flew down there, and I can still interact with the beetles, and I finished the questline.

Unless they've changed something, they should be there all the time once you've done the quests. They always were. One thing to note, however, is that they often only appear when you get very close. It like they materialize in front of you. So maybe on days of latency issues the phasing doesn't happen properly. I hope they haven't changed the phasing.

You can pull the beetles out of their phase by placing a trap right where they are located. Hard to tell which color is where until you trap one of course, but this is the technique I used to tame one.

O wow thanks for the tip. Even though they are phased after you do the quest I mentioned, they still trigger freezing trap!

It works- even with never questing on my premade goblin.

Downside is you can also pull ghosts- best bet is to put the traps under the statues feet if you're unphased. And well for those phased you probably know where :p

Mmkay, everyone who said that the beetles are still there IS CORRECT. YAY! I have Galatea now. <3 (On live.) You *do* have to go right up to them to see them; you can't just pop your head in the entrance and check. Updating first post. ^_^ Thanks all! And confirmed that they're still visible on the PTR as well. That's a relief!

I had no idea of that either. If so, very cool. It could be used to get the gem/hunched tigers in Neferset or the red hyenas on the cliffs as well.

When I tested this, traps wouldn't trigger on phased mobs.

I found that if you lay a freeze trap JUST inside the phased zone, back up so you're outside it, Concussive Shot the beast so it runs into the trap, and then tame, you can tame phased beasts.

That method has three points:

* The trap stops it from leaving the phased zone
* You must be in range of (and have LoS on) the mob
* It allows you to stand outside the phased zone so you can see the phased mobs

But the important thing is actually the LoS. It doesn't help if you can see the mob by hovering a bit away on a flyer, because if you can't see it while able to stand still & channel at it while in range you can't do it.

However, I'm curious if the methods being used to tame the beetles don't quite fit into your guidelines - that is, if you can violate the third point of your method and still tame a beetle. The reason I ask is that I certainly don't remember seeing any bugs scurrying around the Temple of the Stars before they had been phased in by the questline. Am I to take it that standing in other phased zones and dropping a trap doesn't work, however?

Yeah, you have to be able to SEE the mobs when you're standing outside the phased zone. So basically, if it's just a part you haven't done yet, it won't work--but if it's a part you went past, and you can see the mobs when standing outside the area...

Well, I think it's down to which phase is the "real" one, which gets way too complex even for me. I guess if you can see the mobs inside because that's the "real" phase you haven't unlocked, then it would work, but... Well.

I really hate phasing >.> The idea is nice for questing, but it screws the game up so badly imo. WPvP is pretty dead in many places as a result
