Old pets, old memories.

Unread post by Helio »

So, what are some of your -really- old pets from back in the day that even though you may or may not have them anymore... you will remember for the rest of your days?

The ones I'll remember are from when I started playing WoW for the first time as a troll hunter back in '07 and I instantly fell in-love with the Strangelthorn Feline Goodness. I stopped dead in my tracks as I looked up to see this beauty known as King Bangalash, a beautifully created white tiger*drools* I had to have him, he had to be mine... and so I enlisted the aid of a passing restoration shaman in training, and together we managed to tame this wild beast of the Vale.... I felt so good about myself and kept him for a long long time... up till BC hit.

What a great idea for a thread! Oh man, this is so difficult considering the amount of hunters I've made and all the pets I've gone through. I'll see what I can remember though. This will be fun to reminisce!

Sorry in advance for the gigantic post I know this will be. >.>

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

My very first character was a Night Elf called Vephriel. She only got up to about level 30ish before my boyfriend and I switched to Horde. We only started with Alliance due to our friends being there, but when they stopped playing we were pretty much like 'Screw this, we're heading to the awesome faction'. xD She still exists because I don't have the heart to delete my first character. Anyways, the pets that I remember from her were:

Image Snapjaw, my first Crocolisk pet. I ran all the way to the Durotar border to get him. Crocs are my favourite animals in real life, so I really wanted one in game. Back then they were so useless as pets, but I had him regardless. Oddly enough I later found out that there were mobs called Snapjaw Crocolisks. I had only chosen the name because it was fitting. xD

Image Sinthom was her main pet. I wanted a raptor really badly, and since the black ones couldn't be tamed back then, I settled for the dark grey/blue. It was a very exciting moment when I was a high enough level to venture into Wailing Caverns and tame one of those sneaky stealth raptors. :) He was the pet that I used to level with.

Image Charlotte was probably one of the only female pets I've ever owned, but I loved the black widows in game and since I love spiders I had to have one. :)

Image Adolf (no, not named after who you're thinking, it just means Wolf) was another pet I remember fondly. My boyfriend and I dared to run into Silverpine together since we really wanted these awesome looking black wolves. We got matching ones. xD

I didn't have all of these at the same time (there weren't that many pet slots back in the day), but I forget who I let go of first and such.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The second hunter that I made was a male Tauren named Kastrel. He was also my very first Horde character. I'm not really sure why I chose a male Tauren, but I know I hated the females so I couldn't play one. I think I just liked the race in general.

Anyways, I got him up to around level 35 I believe (I'm a very slow leveller) before Burning Crusade came out and I created Vephriel. After a while she became my favourite and eventually I deleted Kastrel.

Image His one and only pet was Humar. Obviously I levelled with something else until 23, but I can't remember what it was nor was it important. As soon as I learned of Humar I had to have him. So at 23 I clearly remembering heading off to the lion tree near Ratchet and camping my butt down for 5 hours straight, unflinchingly waiting for the black lion to spawn. It was the first rare tame I'd ever done, and it was so exciting. I kept the name Humar, since it seemed only fitting, and from that day forwards it was his sole pet.

I actually kept Kastrel around for a long time, even after creating Vephriel, solely because of Humar. Though I knew I wouldn't play that character any more, I felt horrible deleting him because he had a pet that took me so long to get (in my eyes...lol at future Skoll camping and such). At some point I realized that it was pointless, and when I needed the room I let him and Humar go. This is why I feel so glad to have Humar tamed again on my little Troll hunter, Gazini. :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then there's Vephriel. Oh boy I've had a lot of pets on Veph. Probably half of which I don't remember. The ones I can though, are the following:

Image Image Frankenswine was my buddy. I still regret letting him go sometimes, because I probably had that piggy for 80% of my levels. He started as an armored black boar, but I had the zombie pig in my sights for the future. He was the same pet in my eyes, he only....died or something at some point. xD Anyways, boars were amazing for solo levelling, and before pets had their huge revamp he was the most overpowered thing I've ever tamed. Nothing could take aggro off of him, and his charge was spectacular. It was a sad day when I had to release him for bigger and better pets that came along with BC and WotLK. :( Gah, I'm all sad thinking about him now.

Image Naraku (means Hell in Japanese) was my levelling pet through the 60's. Once I hit Outland I really wanted one of the awesome purple Ravagers with glowy eyes. He was quite a unique pet, and though I didn't like Ravagers at first, they definitely grew on me.

Image Wraith was my other pet while going through Outland. I really liked the Outland Raptor looks, and his dark grey colouring was to my tastes. Kept him for a long time, though he was eventually overshadowed by the awesomeness of Devilsaurs. :3

Image Image Vorpal, yet another pet I had during Outland. I started out with the white skin, but went with the green once I was appropriate level. I loved that they were the closest thing to dragons we could tame. Ideally I was going to tame Gezz since her colouring was absolutely my favourite. I levelled like mad, tried it multiple times and failed, then next thing I knew she couldn't be tamed anymore. ;__; Sad, sad day. I couldn't keep a warp stalker after that, I was too depressed.

Image Goliath was a short-lived pet, but I loved him while he had his awesome Rhino Bowling. After that was nerfed he just wasn't as fun.

Image Krauser - I've had this black wolf skin a few times with different names, but eventually I realized I just wasn't as connected to it as I thought. It's still my favourite if I had to choose a wolf model though.

I've had various hunters besides those three, but they were the primary focus. Wow, quite a trip down memory lane. I'm sure no one read all that, but I had fun writing and remembering. ^^

Hmm, let's see...

I used this lil ravager a long time while leveling. I named him Beavis, because he had an underbite, just like the character in the show Beavis and Butthead xD I loved him... sad that he now roams the wilds again ;_;

Another pet I remember fondly was my warp stalker, Quantum. He was awesome for pvp, I loved him to pieces, briefly. As I got more into PvE, I decided he wasn't the best bet, as the thunderstomp got me in trouble a couple times, hehe.

My first pet? A wolf named Rex, the mulgore wolves. no not the prarie wolf which barked, the Alpha. And I remember running all over the place with Rex. The first time I died to an ally when I accidently clicked him and auto attacked.

He killed my pet- mocked me as I was absolutely horrified, then killed me.

I bawled in guild chat that my pet was dead Aria what do I do MY PET IS DEAD ITS GONE FOREVER ;__; then she told me to use Rez pet.

TRU STORY.

The pet I had after Rex, I kept for like 40ish levels was Hance a purple Raptor. And once again it couldn't just be any purple raptor, it had to be one of the lv 18-19 ones that wander around in the barrens. Not the WC ones. Ah now I remember, the pet I replaced Hance with was a purple Frostsaber. Ahhh good times.

First real pet I liked was Death Flayer. I tamed him several times on my hunters, since early on I kept deleting/remaking my hunter. Just loved how he looked and acted. Of course, this was back when he had the fastest attack speed of any scorpid. Ah, fun times.

Right. I've gone through a long list of pets, but these stick out.

I had at first, a spotted nightsaber named Midnight. Midnight was originally intended to be a striped nightsaber, but I got him when the nightsabers were bugged; they became spotted. Well, I kept the spotted little guy. Eventually, Midnight was replaced by a cougar named Saber. Saber lasted 3 levels, before I went through a rapid succession of pets.

Finally, I chose a panther and named it, you guessed it, Midnight, in honor of my nightsaber. (His story was he grew up and lost the mottled fur. Lions do that, so why not Midnight?) Eventually, he lasted till 63, where I got Rak'shiri. I let him go in a secluded area of Terokkar.

I read it all Veph, and enjoyed it! :D

Most of my hunters have never made it past level 30 or so, except for a couple. So the only two that really stick out to me are:

Number one: Tetsusaiga (Echeyakee). I loved his look when I first saw him and after much research and such, figured out how to get him (I was a nelf hunter, so pretty hard to get as alliance). I still have him to this day. Back then I was on Lightbringer and my hunter's name was Nakoma. Then when I got married, my account turned into my husband's account (not sure how that happened...), and I had to create a new one. I badly wanted to transfer her to my new account, but back then the service wasn't available, so Nakoma went into forced retirement. Then, a few months ago, I decided I missed her a lot. None of my newer hunters just felt the same to me. So, I transferred her to my current server Ysera, and renamed her Rhyela (according to some D&D elven name generator, it means "jade hawk"), and now my "first" hunter has sort of been resurrected and is now my main again!

Number two: Moro (wolf, specifically Mist Howler). I tamed him on a hunter named Nakoma, that I created on Ysera. This is before I transferred my current hunter over, and basically I was trying to re-create my first hunter though it never felt the same. But, anyhow, Mist Howler back then was special because he had something like a 1.4 second attack speed, which was pretty fast. Every hour on the hour, I logged on in Ashenvale and eagerly checked my beast tracking for this rare wolf. It took a while, but finally I found him and tamed him. I loved that wolf, and used him for a long time. Eventually that hunter went into retirement and ultimately she and Moro were deleted. :( (Hey, it worked out in the end though).

That was awesome reading Vephriel. I really enjoyed it!

I'm still working on my hunter, but the very first rare pet I ever tamed was Ressan the Needler http://www.wow-petopia.com/html/mobs/mo ... edler.html. I have worked with, caught and released a multitude of other pets but keep coming back to him. My bat totally kicks butt in PvE and PvP, and I love that versatility. I named him Fledermaus which is German for bat of course. :)

Vephriel,
That was a fun read and brought back lots of memories about the various pets I've had including Humar and Rak'Shiri. Thank you very much!

On my horde hunter, I still have Humar (Soy) that was my main PvP pet ever since Takk and Lupos were fixed. I enjoyed Humar so much on my horde hunter that I camped him on my nelf hunter and enjoyed playing with him so much until I had to let him go because it was difficult to keep 3 pets leveled up. Now that they made pet lvl'ing so much easier, I've actually had times where I've almost dropped a pet to get Humar back but since Blizzard removed the leet tag, and put in Pitch, I don't think Humar will be back in my stables anytime soon. Just not the same.

I still remember Pancetta, a Rotting Agam'ar, and how me and a friend went into RFK just to tame it. That was fun. A lot of wipes but finally made it and picked one up. Those were good times.

UGH i had this all typed out and i messed up big time! well these are my most memorable ones:

ImageGorefang was my first pet, i planned to get a black worg but got this guy instead.

ImageImageThese two igot in the 20s around the same time, i had the lynx till lvl40 and humar till the 60s.

ImageI loved this guy! He was beautiful and ihave tamed him several times before, but he just never has the feel to him.

ImageImageThese two beauties were with me for a long time, but neither of them had the feel. i had them both till i was in my 60s-70s.

ImageThis guy was my pvp pet from 74(i think) to the 80s for awhile, he definatley had that feel to him and i loved him to peices, but i traded him for Nuramoc.

ImageImageImageThese three were probaly some of the best memories, all beautiful pets and all fun to have around. The green outland raptor in preticular was an amazing pet, i had them all till Wotlk and i regret getting rid of the raptor, everytime i retame him its never the same.

Timber was my first pet on my very first toon (dwarf). I didn't even know what a rare was when I tamed him! I didn't even know that there were other wolves that looked like him (he's the only worg type in Dun Morogh) and was surprised to see there were. I kept Timber till about lvl 20 when I fell for the big blue tallstrider in Darkshore. I couldn't afford another stable slot and foolishly released him.
I kept the tall strider Hortensia until lvl 80, but no longer have her. I miss her sometimes, though. She was so silly! Sometimes, when she was done killing, she'd go tearing off an kill any nearby critters. She literally saved me, many times.
When I hit 80, I went back to Dun Morogh and retamed Timber. I swear he missed me! :) I'll never let him go again.
I had a Scarlet Monastery hyena for a long time. Maggie. She was the best and so pretty. I tamed her with a friend and when that friend and I had a falling out, I released Maggie. Too many memories.
Those were my favorites, lvling up. Now, I have also have my armored hog Snortly and my ghostsaber Kyndri, who I just love. Kyndri floats on water, by the way. Very odd. I consider Kyndri, Timber and Snortly "unreleaseable"

Before I switched to the horde, I had a night elf hunter named Frotto that I would play on. His first pet was a moonstalker from Darkshore named Tybalt. I was a newbie and didn't know that diseases wear off the pet after a while and abandoned him ><. I tamed a white wolf from Ashenvale and ran around with it until I got to lvl 30 and tamed a tiger from Stranglethorn. One day when I was lvl 42, I decided to start questing in Feralas and while trying to run around the horde camp, I spotted Snarler and knew I had to have him. I abandoned my tiger and tried to tame Snarler. It took me 8 times to try and tame him. He kept breaking out of my trap since he had high frost resistance and a few seconds before the tame was done, he would disappear. Took half an hour, but he was mine (>^-^)>. Named him DarkKnight and he's been my pal ever since. We went through many raids and instances up until lvl 70 when I left my night elf for a tauren hunter. Now I play horde on my hunter Orrik and my favorite pet of all is my wolf Riku (named after the Kingdom Hearts character, also have a bear named Kairi and my guildie has a cat named Sora ^_^) who used to be Bjomolf. I used to have one of the wolves that changed colors, but I really liked the dark orange eyes of the brown model so I abondoned him and tamed Riku. I've been hoping to be back on Frotto to lvl him up and once Cataclysm comes out, my horde guildies and I were planning on making worgen on Frotto's realm and will once again be reunited with DarkKnight.

(sorry for the long post (>^-^)> )

My first hunter that I actually stuck with after getting my own WoW account was Casdia, my dwarf hunter(now recently changed into an orc). We've been together since 2005; Oh what a long, strange trip it's been...

I fell into rare pet hunting like it was breathing.

Casdia's first pet was Timber, the rare worg in Dun morough. I slowly killed the wolves around his island, dying numerous times, and then enlisted my husband to help distract his two escorts. I kept him until I was high enough to tame the Ghost Saber.

My Ghost Saber was named Azrael, and I kept him up until level 57, when I hunted for Rak'shiri.

Hunting Rak'shiri took forever, as it was just before BC and Winterspring was still very active. I died three times to the stealthed kitties before I finally tamed her.

BC hit, and I went through a plethora of pet tames before going back to my blue tiger, Zukauni. Then came the love of my life; my ghost wolf.

I was never the type to have a lot of gold, but I worked my butt off to save gold for the stuff to tame him. I enlisted a shaman, and my husband's leatherworking hunter, and off to duskwallow we went. It took a few tries, but I've got him, and I love him more than any other pet. I had the raiders in my guild give me flack about it. "Wolves are useless" they said...Oh how their words have been eaten! And the funny walk was fixed too! Hallelujah!

Other than my Ghost wolf, whos gone by many names(his original name being Wuff, of all things), but is now known as Tovauni, there really havn't been any other permanent pets in Casdia's stable. The only thing close to one is her crab, Tacoma, just because he's so damn adorable!

I actually had three cats back in the pre BC days on my first hunter (a NE alliance side on Dragonmaw). Three that I will always remember due to how long I had them, how often they saw battle (a lot lol), and how tricky they were to tame at the time for me.

http://www.wow-petopia.com/html/mobs/mo ... aguar.html
My first and most favorite cat that stuck with me through thick and thin, tanked a few lowby instances, and was my all around buddy.A speedy little swamp jaguar from swamp of sorrows that I leveled to 60 with. I came clear over from Kalimdor over to EK to tame her at level 36. It was quite a long run but it was worth it. :] Her name was Rune and she retired before I ventured into Outland. (She was an old lady by then. lol)

http://www.wow-petopia.com/html/mobs/mob_rakshiri.html
Rak'shiri was also one you could count on seeing at my side often after camping him for well around two weeks at 57. =D I named him Argyle. He would hang with me for level 60 instances and AV matches (and he also got a lot of action later on when my guild started running AQ).

http://www.wow-petopia.com/html/mobs/mo ... nther.html
My last pet was a zulian panther I snagged when my guild got into raiding and ventured into ZG for the first time. I was at a loss over what to name him until one of my guildy friends suggested I name him Severus (she was a big Harry Potter snape fan xD). It suited him well so I stuck with it. He saw the most use as I started to grind my honor rank/gear about four months before BC hit then leveled with me all the way to 70 where we took up PvPing once again. :D

Edit: Found some old screenies. =) I did a lot of exploring pre-BC so pay no mind to a few weird screen shot locations. lol

Severus: Image Image Image

Argyle: Image Image Image

Rune: Image
I'm sad that I could only find one of rune. I thought I took a lot more but it would appear that her screeny folder got wiped.=(

My most memorable pet that I no longer have is my cat Neko, who was with my Horde hunter, Orleela, who I lost when I had to start a new account.

He was an accidental pet. I was going through Stranglethorn, looking for a cat to teach me an ability. Somewhere along the way I was suprised to see a neat looking black cat in a cage there and thought that it was waaaay cooler then then one I had at the time. Afterwards I couldn't come up with a name, so my brother suggested Neko, which means cat in Japanese. This gave me even more attachment to him, as he always reminded me of my brother :) He was my only companion on Orleela.

There are only really two that I will ever really remember... one was my very first pet ever: Porkchops, the boar! He was such a good little fella... I think that they need a new mottle of boar in Cata, like a huge, fat warthog or something. but yes, he was my very first pet.

Second was my favorte of alltime! He was accidentally abandoned (by my brother...) so that a red netherray would be tamed for about 30 seconds, and then it was "Boring" and my brother abandoned that...

Good ol' Deadbone, the felpaw wolf! Had him from the later 40's all the way to level 73. (until... the accident...)

but I recently went back and tamed Deadbone again! Just got him to 80 yesterday, so I'm one happy camper :) He will be the one pet (except maybe the ooze or hydra... however if hydra is tamable in cata then nvm...) that i will nver get rid of!

Just under a week after the original WOW was released, my power-leveling friends were already in Stranglethorn Vale and let me know that the boat was indeed "operating" from Booty Bay to Ratchet. Most of Apatheia at that early stage had already been in the beta and knew this was about the only way to get to The Barrens as a low-level Dwarf.

The goal? A level 11 Raptor now that I could *finally* have a pet!

So, at level 11, I stripped nakid and began the run through STV dieing again and again but slowly, with each rez, getting closer and closer to Booty Bay. Finally, 14 deaths later (yep, I remember the count =), I reached it, hopped on a boat, and headed for The Barrens on a PvE server.

Now, remember, this was less than a week after launch and I was the first dwarf nearly everyone in the Barrens had EVER seen. In fact, I was the first Alliance many had ever seen. Needless to say, it was hard to tame ANYTHING for the first 20 to 30 minutes as a shout had gone out to the zone and the entire Barrens zone of Horde (or so it seemed) converged on ... must've been like 50 people there.

It actually took over an hour for me to GET the Raptor and name him the very first "Splinters", as people kept interrupting the tame; not on purpose but trying to "save" me I think. I waved and hearthed home and began my Hunter merry ways. Since then, I've had a LOT of pets. I did a ton of work initially on "Unique" taming trying to find special pets and remember posting/reading fondly as people recorded which uniques had which specials. And, yes, I had nearly all of them (guesstimates of the specials):

Death flayer (Fast Attack Speed 1.5)
Swamp Jaguar (Fast Attack Speed 1.2)
The Rake (Fast Attack Speed 1.2)
Snarler (Resists)
Broken Tooth (Fast Attack Speed 1.0)
Spire Spiderling (Fast Attack Speed 1.5)
Arash-ethis (When Wind Serpents owned DPS)
Ravager ((Fast Attack Speed 1.3)
Lupos (Go Go Spell Damage!)
Ursius (Attack Speed 2.4 had to be good for something, right?)
Deathmaw (Fast Attack Speed 1.3)
Mazzranache (Could you RUN any slower?)

And I'm sure i'm missing a few .....
