Terrorpene - steps please

Unread post by nanrector »

After several days of checking for him I found him this morning with no one around. However he killed me 6 times then another hunter got him. Can I verify the exact steps to getting him? I've only tamed 2 pets so maybe I'm missing something here...

I'm a level 85 Draenei Hunter

USED: 1. Potion of Speed
2. Prismatic Elixir
3. Cast Deterrence

Cast tame but as soon as I'm close enough to tame him he does his fire breath thing and I'm dead in seconds. Every single time.
Can someone tell me what I might be missing?

At level 85 you should have enough health by now to simply hit /tame beast. In gear that wasnt even allowing me to queue for heroics I was able to do that and still have about 20% health left.

Otherwise another tactic is Grab a Corehound (if you're BM), pop ancient hysteria, then dismiss pet, then hit tame beast

Dang... thats what I was reading. Why the heck was I dying so fast??? He shot that fire at me solid every time from the get go and I was dead in seconds. My gear if not bad at all. Not raid stuff but still. ack. I've read over and over on the cord hound but didn't look that up. I had no idea I could even get one. I am BM. Is that a hunter pet? I had to stable my current pet before taming right??? Thats what I did.

Thanks!

yeah its a hunter pet. look here for tips on different corehounds that you can get:

http://wow-petopia.com/family/corehound.html

You cast the ability Ancient Hysteria, hit Dismiss pet, then hit tame beast.

You're only tamed 2 pets? Get out and explore :) Go hunting for rares :) Best parts of being a hunter I'd say

I've heard lots of people say dmg isn't an issue at lvl 85; as I tamed him at lvl 81 I can't comment on that but I can tell you what worked for me:

1) Load up on fire protection gear from the ah - this was the key for me; I had a little over 500 FR when I tamed him, iirc, and he did a grand total of 20k or so thanks to this.

2) Set up a "tame prep" macro - in the interest of time, you want your potion, hysteria, dismiss and so forth to all go off as quickly as possible (note: at the time I did this, deterrence had no effect during tames - icon was up, but dmg came right through), and hotkey it right next to tame beast. If you have gobs of FR and/or HP this part is not crucial, but if you want to err on the side of caution, this can save you a couple seconds.

That's pretty much it.

Good luck!

EDIT: I'm not saying you're doing this... but if all else fails make sure you aren't standing in the lava; sometimes it can look on your screen like you're just at the edge when in fact the server thinks you're ankle-deep.

Not sure how much this will help, but if u have like 520 justice points to spare u could go grab the lvl 70 fire resist gear in Shattrath.
With the huge increase in rating needed from 80 to 85, the 30% from core hound will probably triumph any other sources of haste anyway, my advice will be not to bother.

Just checked the spell Terrorpene casts
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=93521
Fire resistance gains quadruple effectiveness against this attack.

FR gears may actually be worth it (in case you are still failing with corehound)

The Drums Of The Wild can be a big help here as well. They don't give a *lot* of FR, but they give enough to make a difference in the damage. Unprotected, the fire will tick for 10k fire damage every second. So judge by that and your HP how short your tame needs to be. If yuo only have 60k HP, then you need to get it down to 6 seconds, get more HP, or get fire resistance. If you have 100k, then you're golden; just make sure you start taming immediately after tagging, or aggro *with* Tame Beast and pray.

Do a /who on Hyjal, find a pala. His fire res was enough to get me with 2-3k hp left, even at 81. I also had about 12% haste and elixir of speed. But yeah, fire res is the key in this case.

The other thing I've heard people recommend is if you have pvp gear put it on for the extra health.

Didn't we have to stable pets at one time to tame??? Dang it. I had no idea I could still use my pet. I'll get looking for the corehound. Yeah I'm a bit attached to my cat... I really do need to get some more different pets. I saw someone with the turtle though and I just had to get that guy.

Thanks for the link on petopia. I'll see about grabing me one of those.

Appreciate it!

I tamed him at lvl 81, with no special gear (maybe 1 piece of green gear above my ICC gear). I used a haste pot and a lightening speed elixir which worked just fine. My husband popped a quick heal on me which helped and did not pull aggro- but at lvl 85 you should be able to tame beast without any real issue.

Maybe try the haste pot and speed elixir and see if that helps ya.

Good luck!

You only have to have a spare slot to be able to tame another pet. You can take your core hound, use its ability, then quickly dismiss (or abandon if it's a trash pet) to tame your turtle.

I had no idea you could do that! That makes it easier for sure.

Got me a core hound. The doggy one from Azuremyst Isle as he was quick to get. Now to just keep trying for the turtle to show up... yet again.. :P

Thanks again for the input! I'll post when I'm finally able to get the little bugger.

Abandon is the way to go if you want to ensure no wasted seconds (for gankers and such); if you're going to dismiss instead, make sure and do it before you enter combat as it takes a few seconds to complete!

Got Him!

Unread post by nanrector »

Wow... talk about lucky. Lost him by dying yesterday morning and logged on at 6 am CST today and my NPC Scan went off immediately for him. Had my core hound and used ancient hysteria, dismissed my core hound, drank potion of speed and prismatic elixir just to be sure and tamed him with the tiniest bit of health left. One problem yesterday I realized was my NPC Scan alert pic of him was covering my channeling bar. I kept thinking the taming wasn't working as I could not see the bar. So I couldn't tell how close I was to taming so I made sure to delete that addon icon of him too.

Thanks for all the great input and help! This is a great board.

Photo of my new pet shown. Have to get thinking of a name now. :-)

Have a great day everyone!

Congratulations on the tame! Isn't he just gorgeous? Glad you managed to pull it off in the end.

Thank you! He's a beauty. I knew I had to have him when I saw someone else with him in Tol Barad.
