Updating Player Models

Unread post by Mindsprocket »

The thread about which pet models need fixing also got me thinking about player models. I'm sure we all agree that the old models need some better texture and more detail in general. But what specific problems do you see? Which models and animations bug you the most and what other ideas do you have for improving player models?

One thing that's always bugged me: Female Dwarves and Trolls kneeling instead of sitting. Dwarves' legs are actually too short to kneel so that the lower half of their legs just seems to clip off. And the female Trolls look so incredibly stiff and uncomfortable. That's a general problem with them but it's expecially obvious when they kneel or are mounted. I love how the male Trolls rest and I wish the females had a similar posture. I can live with the females standing up straight (though they wouldn't have to imo) but there's a difference between standing straight and having a pole where it doesn't belong. >>

I've also thought that now with the Wildhammers and the Dark Iron Dwarves as allies of Ironforge, it would be great to include this in the character customisation. So you could get tatoos on face and body like the Wildhammers and some proper Dark Iron look (there are some grey skins available, but they're not as dark as the Dark Iron's and you can't get red glowing eyes).

The female dwarf sit is horrible. I've always hated that sit animation. If they sat with one leg crossed over the other or something like that, it'd be fine.

Male trolls, when they do things like fish, actually break and dislocate completely. O.o I hate it.

I wish all of the older races would get make overs. They just look so clunky next to the newer races. I play a male human, and I don't think I need to point out all of the problems with that model. ;) I had been hoping the worgen human forms would have been updated at least.

For the love of all that is holy make female trolls blink!

It's creepy loading my trolls in WMV and never seeing them blink. O_O

I would love it if they made all of the older characters have proper wrists and what not, this is especially noticeable with the male human, male orc, and male tauren models.

Male tauren, male worgen, and male draenei legs feel as if they're too short for their bodies because their torsos are overly large.

I wish male trolls didn't look like they were being folded in half. Makes my back hurt just to look at them.

Why do all the Horde races have to hunch? For me, personally, I have a hard time playing a character with a huge hunch.

Watching a male worgen try to howl sends me into giggle fits because they can't close their lips around their chainsaw teeth to do a proper howl.

I think that's enough for now.... >_>

Things that always bugged me are:
Stiff hair. The elves seem to suffer the most. I remember checking out the male blood elf hair and finding that some styles where so stiff that when he moved to talk, the hair would stick strait out and/or stab him through the chest. o.o Also wish night elves and blood elves (?) didn’t have fangs… when the males open their mouth to shout or something, it looks like they are a vampire xD
The human male faces tend to bother me a bit too, some of them seem so incredibly flat that it looks like someone just took a tan marker and traced features onto them. It also looks very painful when someone has show helm on and the helm seems to cut through part of their skull… also wish that your riding posture could be fixed so your face doesn’t smash into the neck of a horse when he rears back on two legs. As things are now my night elf gets a spike to the face whenever she rides her drake xD also draenei legs seem to stick out at odd angels when riding some mounts, it doesn’t look natural o.o... and on a side note has anyone else noticed that draenei have become obsessed with cold nights and butter when it comes to flirting? that’s all me and my friends ever get now xD

I know Blizzard said they wanted to, but yeah... No idea when this remodel will take place, be it in a content patch (which is unlikely, IMO) or NEXT expansion. But come on... It's been more than six years. Like a poster above, I was really hoping that with Worgen coming out that the human models would be tidied up but...alas.

So, that being said, I'd love to see all the races brought up to par – I don't really care if they have to change the models more drastically than others to do it, honestly.

Humans
Please fix the hare lips on the men. I can't really take seeing any of the guys without a beard for this reason... Also, they run like their spine has been fused – doubly so for the women. Take the models to a chiropractor and let them be able to bend properly.

Also, the oven mitt hands on the women really have to change...

Night Elves
Giving the men actual hips and a larger pelvic area to match those abnormally bulbous thighs would be really super. @_@ Also...some of their facial expressions and hairstyles are downright hideous and overly pixelated.

Orcs
I'm not sure who's lower res at this point... Humans or Orcs. The women aren't that bad, but the males. MAN. Reach out and touch the polygons.

Also, I'm not sure if it's been addressed yet, but if that "tent" around a robe-wearing woman's crotch is still there? That'd be nice if it were fixed so they don't look like they have raging erections whenever they sit for a drink. Funny enough, I love orc women casters...but having this happen whenever I had to mana up is kind of embarrassing! >_>

Trolls
As it has been said before... The men have impossible and back aching posture, where the women have the same fused spine problem as their human counterparts. Please, PLEASE, give the girls functioning eyelids.

Misc.

Clean up the hair styles, both standard and optional, in the Barber Shop. While I am glad that our toons can change their hair, I have felt ever since it was implemented that Barber Shop was slapped together. Some of the options, like on human men, have ruler straight hairlines that make it look like they're wearing a wig. Or that the pixelation is so different it seems unnatural to see a low-rez character frame (IE: Humans) with a higher rez hairstyle (IE: Blood Elf hairstyles).

And while this isn't a graphical concern, I've noticed that worgen and goblins have no audible /sigh emote among other missing ones? And, also, adding a /howl emote for the worgen would be nice... They can snarl just fine, but I guess that would take extra rendering to make it (as another said) so their lips actually move and cover those teeth.

Overall, while I know people will pitch a fit over character models since they liked theirs just fine (You can't please everyone, after all), I think things will be namely favorable! Whenever I went 'whoa' at newer models like Varian, the new Jaina, or the new Thrall... It's because how -vast- the difference is between the old and current versions. I recently ran through CoT: Old Hillsbrad and CRINGED at seeing Thrall 1.0 because I'm now used to his shiny new shamanistic model.

There will be an outcry from certain people, yes, but so many of the vanilla races need retexturing, rerigging, and Light knows what else. And I'd love to see this done sooner than later because Titan is only so far away and I'll be very sad to see if the old races don't see some loving by then.

Retexturing is necessary, but changing the style? Not so much. I (and some of the folks I've talked to) hate the new Thrall, Garrosh, Scowly Varian etc models just down to the style. And I love my female orc! The exception, perhaps, is the terribad worgen female face. Seriously, just -ugh-. Or maybe the stupid tauren male head-below-neck hunch

The ones I notice most are things like female trolls NEVER blinking, female taurens' weird tabard-tent when sitting, and as Ebonrook said the hairstyles--female undead, for example, can get the old female gnome hair, which has about half the pixel resolution by looks. It's VERY strange. Aside from the model bugs, they just generally need a whole revamp as far as detail goes--comparing the male worgen to a male undead, for example, one can just see the pixels on the latter!

Also, where the hell is the dance school already? :(

I can never make a female orc caster because I cannot unsee their casting animation. They look like their masturbating the air or something. >_<

I wish the male humans and male orcs looked less like gorillas as well with their undefined wrists and too muscly bodies.

Humans generally, in fact I really wish I could play a female vrykul as a human hunter, I LOVE the look of thge Vrykul, it wouldn;t be hard to rework some of them into a more human shape and size.

Dwarves, although you can already make a dark iron type look with the basic customisations having access to some wildhammer style tattoos would be great. I would love to see a change to the female dwarf run animation, in fact alot of the female run animations looks silly. Also dwarf mohawks, I want my dwarf warrior to have a flaming red beard and a mohawk! in fact more dwarf beard options!

overall I'd be glad to see a general upgrade model quality wise and texture wise although I wouldn't like to log in the next day after a patch and not recognise my characters.

Speaking of making Wildhammer & Dark Iron dwarves, someone had made a post awhile ago on the Suggestions forum that did something similar. They suggested that the "subraces" be available to players either baseline or after they had a char of level something+. It went like this:

Dwarves: Dark Iron/Wildhammer
Tauren: Grimtotem/Taunka
Orcs: Brown Orcs/Blackrock
Draenei: Broken

Other options were humans that looked Vrykul, elf-Forsaken (think Dark Rangers), trolls that were Forest Trolls (although this doesn't work so well lore-wise), High Elven Night or Blood Elves, and so forth.

I thought it was a neat idea, and although it did have some flaws that needed working out it is still food for thought/discussion :)

That's a really awesome idea actually. I think it would be really interesting to have a couple 'flavours' of each race. :)

At least Sylvanas stopped bouncing. -.-

I think male humans need it the most, even if I don't play any. It's simply because they are so horrendously bad. Draenei need another animation for being mounted too. Having them spread their legs that way looks ugly, especially for the females.
