If you're going to be replacing the harddrive, go for 2 tb right away. Harddrives are fairly cheap, and 400 gb isn't a lot.

one final update.
im still without my desktop to play WoW but i have made a huge amount of progress on finding the root of my problems.
im still pretty sure its the hard drive failing i even have stronger reasons for this now because it makes lots of sounds similar to failing hard drivs whenever its in use bt when i use BIOS to scan the noise stops....save for the usual low humm computers make.
i also went and found specs on the drive thats installed and im definately looking into getting a bigger hard drive if i need to replace the current one

If the hard drive is making weird noises now, it probably won't last for long. Burn out a Linux LiveCD, and boot from it (since it's not on the harddrive you won't get any crashes, and it doesn't overwrite anything) and then use that to back your stuff up.

Yeah, clicking drives are a sure sign they're about to fail completely on you. Last time I had that happen on me was on my laptop, and I was trying to hold out until I could buy an external drive (NAS) to back up to, but alas the drive died on me about an hour before I had the backup drive ready to go.

Moral of the story - if your drive is a'clickin', get yourself a new one a'quicken!
