Re: Random Pet Challenge [v3.0]

My first challenge was the tan Silithid from Thousand Needles. I've never tamed a Silithid before (I'd gone BM-offspec for questing and for the Spirit Beasts xD) so I flew away for a short reprieve from the sands of Uldum to go and nab myself one of them.

Image

Within a matter of minutes he was mine, and the first thing I noticed about him was his swimming animation. Looks like he's floating off into space like some demented jellyfish, hahaha.

Image

(Please excuse my funky UI, I'm still working out some of the kinks in it.) So I got up onto land to get a better look at his animations - and discovered that he has the most adorable idle animation ever. He dances to one side, then dances back. He does it extremely frequently, though, and it gets a little old after awhile.

Image

Image

Named him Tatu, after the artist of the song I was listening to when I tamed him, and then we were off to do dailies in Tol Barad.

First thing I noticed: I don't do Cunning pets much, preferring to stay with Ferocity for the added DPS, but I grew to love Carrion Feeder (saves me money on food!) and he holds aggro great for being three levels below me. Plus the buff he gives as an Exotic pet is handy too - 446 stamina is great when you're like me and always pull one too many mobs xD

Image

He went with me back out to Uldum after I had finished there, and lo and behold my Tatu must've been a good luck charm, because I found Blue Madexx waiting for me when I got there :D

Overall: The Silithid family is one that I have never experienced before, and I must say that while also being more gorgeous than I thought they were initially, they also make wonderful questing partners and I'm sure once I start doing regular dungeons too he'll hold his own in there as well. I plan to keep Tatu - I've grown fond of him :)

I'd love another assignment for Jettatura, as well as one for my newly-created Hunter on Nesingwary.

Jettatura - 85 Goblin Hunter
Exotics: Yes!
Exceptions: No gorillas/monkeys.

Alternia - 24 Troll Hunter (You can roll up to 26, I'll be there shortly.)
Exotics: Nope.
Exceptions: No gorillas/monkeys.

Image

But you can skyrocket away from me,
and never come back if you find another galaxy
far from here with more room to fly.
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by.

Image this time.

Not wanting to go back to Outlands, I decided to pick up one of the ones from the troll starting area since I was already in Orgrimmar. A quick flight down brought me to one of these guys. They're only about level 2, so an easy tame for almost anyone.
Image

I named him Aladar in keeping with Vitani's theme. Looks wise, I like this color a lot more than I thought I would. Raptors are a pet I've had trouble bonding with on Vitani, opting for a serpent instead, but this guy is rather pretty, and the outlands raptor model doesn't seem to have any major issues to me.
Image
Image
Image

The bright red is very rich and pretty looking and the maroon over-coloring blends well and looks good with the raptor. Even the yellow underbelly looks good and almost makes him look like flame.

Their idle animation is simple, it's the exact same as the raptor mount idle. They're very noisy when they go into combat, after using a devilsaur it's not too bad, but people who prefer quieter pets would probably prefer a serpent over these guys.
These guys look good in combat, I love the little jump-kick thing they do as one of their attacks.
Image

They're running animation is smooth, a nice, easy, good looking gait.
Image

Their swim is great too, they use those powerful back legs to push themselves through the water, much like the devilsaurs, their arms just sort of hanging there uselessly.
Image

Their tear armor ability is a sunder armor type effect, great to have if you don't have a warrior or anything to cover it. He kept aggro on the high shaman for me in TH and the two of us tore him apart. He took quite a beating, but mend pet was enough to keep him up between the high shaman and two adds. Raptors are great pets, they look good, do good DPS, and their ability can be very useful. I'm not sure whether to keep Aladar or not, I like him, but I'm really attached to Nagaina, my serpent, and I'm not fond of duplicating buffs/debuffs in my pet team.
Image

Another please.

Edit: Oh shat, I tamed the wrong one... that's why it looks more purple then blue. Oh god, /facepalm. Hopefully this is close enough? Oops...

Sorry for taking so long to make this report!
Image
My challenge was the serpent from WC.
Image
I tamed him easily, and what I really noticed about him was the shinyness of his scales, it's quite mesmerizing. This picture doesn't do him justice at all, but it's the best I could get.
Image
The colors are really pretty, the pinks and purples go together really well. Funny, I used to think these guys were sort of a blue-grey color. :P
Image
Their swimming animation is smooth, as well as their running/walking animations. Their Idle animation is just them looking from side to side.
The special ability is a sunder armor type spell, which is also ranged. I didn't think it was all that useful in PVE, but would be good in PVP, esspecially since it is ranged.

The only problem with the model, is that his tounge flickers up and down all the time, oftentimes ending up in his nose!

Will be keeping this guy (though he needs a name) for a while, I think! I really like his colors and his animations are great!

I'll take another!

I, too, had the red corrupted raptor for my undead hunter. :3 Since my hunter is only a level 29, my review isn't as helpful as Tyger's is! X]

I went to Durotar to snag one of these little guys. Easy tame as they're all low level and neutral.

Image

I hadn't ever tried to tame a corrupted raptor before so I took this opportunity to get a good look at him. Overall, I really don't like how he looks. He has that weird dark maroon/brown bland color that goes from his tail up to his head. What REALLY bothers me is how this is also the color of his teeth.

Image

Something else that bothered me was that all his cute little details were in that icky (imo) color. Like here on his tail, he has these neat spikes and they go up his back but they're the same color!

Image

He's obviously useful when there's no sunder or anything being provided in a group and can help your PvP target die quicker but he isn't a pet I would just run around with. I'm glad I got the chance to really take a look at this guy, even though I don't like his coloring. We explored the troll area for a while but it was eventually time to part ways. :)

Was my assignment this time.

While looking at him I found that the locations of his arrival are a little varied. Petopia lists him as being summoned by just one mob, but I think he is actually summoned by three? Here is my post about that.

Anyways. I went and tamed him via fighting these guys, who were kind enough to summon him.

Image

There are two ways you can do this, shoot the mob until they summon and use your pet to kill them. Then dismiss pet and tame...

Image

OR! You can do what I did the second time around, go pull the mob, wait for him to be summoned and start taming right away. Two mobs plus what you are taming is not that bad...

Image

Though I don't highly recommend this in the area. Ix'lar the Underlord took offense apparently and came and b****-slapped us as soon as my tame went through and then ran away cackling.......

Image

Once I ran back to my corpse, my new red beetle and I went and murdered him most horrendously, and then danced on his corpse.

Image

We felt vindicated after that and went to go look for the Lone Hunter, who I just remembered I could tame. We were very perplexed for a bit, as we found not one but TWO dead doggies.

Image

Beetle (haven't thought up a name yet) was very confused at this and yelled my ear off about it.

Went down and tamed, found the other 'dead' Lone Hunter was actually a dead Lone Hunter, lol. Tamed and got a nice technicolor look for my troubles...

Image

I'm not speaking to that wolf till I can wash off the pink coating...

Anyways, hearthed and went to take some photos of my new beetle.

Image

Beetle helped me when I missed a few spots of pink technicolor slime in the water.

Review:

Image

Love the patterning and design of a beetle, which always surprises me, as I don't like bugs in general. Design wise-A+ to me. Animation is adorable, love their movements when idle.

Tanking: If you've used a turtle then you know what a beetle is like. I can't tell any difference in holding aggro or special ability (that shell thing?) between the beetle and turtle-so I would pick one or the other in your stables if you need room, but not both.

Food: Meh.... not my fave species for food, as he tends to prefer things that none of my other pets tend to use, so that can be irritating if you are not used to carrying fungus or fruit (I usually carry meat/bread).

Overall-get a beetle and try him out. My friend is weirded out by their bug like movements, but I like him. Will likely keep this red guy till I can get one of the b/w color changers or one of the scarab ones.

Who could resist this face?!

Image

Another roll? will be 44 by end of the night.

*Edit*

Roll me up to 46 actually. Hit 45 tonight and am halfway through that, so I'll get 46 easy tomorrow.

Originally Elsi was given the Blue Nether Ray from Zangarmarsh, but since she was still too little to tame it I had Myriana, my level 85 hunter tame him instead.

So, first thing I noticed after taming him is that he's a rather pretty periwinkle blue with white accents (He has since been dubbed Peri).

How can you not love that face in the first pic? He's adorable!
So, before heading off to the Steamvaults to grind some CE rep (got my Hippogriff yay!), we chilled at the Twin Spires to claim them for the Alliance.
So, uh - pretty wet weather we're having isn't it?

I specced him for DPS over tanking, so I did have some aggro issues while soloing. Periodic misdirects helped that issue though. Surprisingly, I didn't have to heal him as much as I thought I would have. His health stayed pretty constant, with me only have to hit Mend Pet a handful of times. His dps wasn't bad either...while I wasn't killing things as fast as I would have with a ferocity pet, things were definitely dying faster than if I had a tenacity pet.

I had actually briefly tamed a green Nether Ray and I wasn't able to really click with it. However, this guy was quite a bit of fun and I was pleasantly surprised. I also think he matches Myri pretty well.

Will take another!

Pawtrack, nice review! I may just go ahead and get a serpent on my up-and-coming hunter, once he can queue for WC. Nice shot of the swim animation!

Sorry this took so long to do! I had a busy weekend without much time/energy to ply my hunter.

Anyway, I had this little guy: Image

I have a bit of a soft spot for the piggies. I ran all the way out to Dun Morogh on my first hunter ever to tame a little black boar--she was a Draenei, so suffice it to say, it was quite a trek for a newbie (I had to ask my bf for directions too, since I was new to Alliance, haha). The boars have one of my favorite models (wee little hooves~). I also LOVE their idle animations and how they wiggle their butts. Just too cute. Another perk is that they will eat anything. This is great for newbies who don't have access to the Mend Pet glyph.

I've tried to get back into boars again, but before the patch they just felt so slow. Tenacity just couldn't compare to ferocity for me. So I looked forward to trying this pet out again.

Image

I never realized how gigantic these guys are in the wild. I named him Hamilton, like all the old boars I have tamed in the past.

Image

I have to say, although I love boars, I'm not the biggest fan of the demonic model (I don't like the diseased models of pets either!). However, I liked his coloration, the deep purple was very nice with the radioactive green color.

Image

I also really like how boars run, they're fun to watch.

Image

And now I come to what I was looking forward to testing out for myself--his DPS. I was quite surprised at how well he did. I specced him full DPS, and he was able to hold hate quite well and barely needed any healing (despite being low leveled). This was a relief, I'm glad Blizz made tenacity pets more viable (for me, at least). I just wish his special wasn't so... useless. I have no bleeds, and if I was going to raid I would not be bringing a tenacity pet with me.

I don't think I'll be holding on to Hamilton, but this little experiment has given me an appreciation for my favorite tenacity pet, Sunny (Grubthor). I used to only use him for soloing dungeons, but now I think I'm gonna do some more questing with him.

Anyway, may I have another roll? It might be a little slow again, though. School is getting pretty busy as my classes are coming to a close.

Okay, so I had this ruby serpent:
Image

I already know I'm not too fond of serpents. I've tried them in the past and while they are shiny and have pretty scales, their faces just weird me out. They almost look too humanoid or something.
Image

Nevertheless, I set out to tame a Sunburst Adder. I found my prize in southern Tanaris. Dropped off my mount and tamed, easy enough!
Image

The first thing I noticed is that its face is not quite as creepy as the other serpents, so maybe it's the eyes. Who knows. It is a very vibrant red. I named it Mohs, which I now realize is the scale for mineral hardness, not chili pepper heat (that'd be Scoville). lawl. Still, I guess being a ruby-like serpent, I suppose it fits?

We killed a few mobs in Uldum in the Sekhet Wastes (no, no reason in particular.....*cough*). No Madexx of course, but I digress. Mohs was able to handle these mobs with relative ease. Its ability is pretty nice, but stuff died before it could get a full three stacks.

So, I decided to take on tougher quarry. We rose to the top of this mountain to take on a roving band of Schnottz fellows. It....didn't end so well. Poor Mohs died in a pathetic heap of all hiss and no bite.
Image

Hmm, well, perhaps one tough enemy, then? I headed to some place I can't remember the name of, and decided this level 85 elite dragon would be better suited to our mission. Nope, that didn't go so well, either.
Image

That pretty much sums up our adventure together. I'm not crazy about serpents to begin with, so I didn't feel too inclined to drag it with me through a dungeon or battleground.

We parted ways on a tiny rock island in Uldum. I now feel kind of bad for leaving the poor fellow there, but I'm sure he'll survive. Well, unless there's more than one of those eels in there.
Image

As far as model goes, it's alright I suppose. Like I said, I haven't ever really been a fan of serpents even though their scales are pretty to look at. And skin, the red is nice but it doesn't feel "life-like" enough to me. But if you like red, and you like serpents, you should give this one a try.

I did notice some odd things, however, like how it looks like teeth are coming out of its cheek. It wasn't just periodically, it was always that way. I got some closeups.
Image

All in all, it's an alright pet with a good ability, just not for me.

Darkonis reporting in

My target was the green moth
Image

Now if your are no Draenei or your hunter is older then Cata. There is only one place to get them, in Terrokar Forrest.
So I went there and did the freeze'n'grab

Review
The looks
Well I never really looked at moths before. And most of there skins are reather plain. So I was a bit suprised by this one.

Image

For some reason the first thing that went throught my head up on taking a closer look was: Hiver Deepscan-Gate-DE
The animations are pretty smoth. And the sparkling fortunatly doesn't come with a soundeffect.

Combat:

I testet AuntieJu durring the daylies in Tol Barat.

Image

Now for a dps pet whoose racial is an interrupt reather than a damage ability, she still produces a good amount of hurt. As with the gorrilla from my last challange the interupt can be reather handy.
As BM I never had problems with pets not holding aggro. The moth is no diiference in that matter.

Next one please

And after a day or two to be very ill, I'm back to finish up my pet report! Kura got the white wasp, and though I considered sweeping into AQ to go and grab one of those, I decided to do the smart thing and go grab me a Qirot. I figure it saves on sanity. ;)

So here's Kurasu and Domino:

Image

Domino, AKA Qirot, is one of the most stunning skins for a wasp that I've seen. When I saw him for the first time, I was really struck by the way the white and black just seemed to pop.

Image

Staring at his back is like looking at a Rorscharch test. Between the pattern and the blurring wings, I could stare at it all day, almost!

Image

One little issue I have with this wasp is that, after dealing with Huhuran for so long, it seems to incredibly tiny beside my dwarf. The sound effects, too, feel a bit odd to me after being so used to hearing the loud screeches and wasp-like sounds of his counterpart, rather than the much softer 'silithid' sounds that the Silithid wasp model makes. Plus, while I quite enjoy it, the constant buzzing might drive many people absolutely nuts.

The wasp's sting ability, a 2 second stun, is extremely useful in PvP and not all that bad in PvE. While I usually leave it on autocast and don't bother with it too much, the most effective way to use it is off autocast, as the wasp will cast it every single time it's off cooldown, thus making it a pain in the butt if you actually *need* to use it. I much prefer slows for PvP, and debuffs or buffs for PvE. Due to that, the wasps in my stable are pretty much decoration, and thus Domino here doesn't get to have the coveted 'last spot' that is being held for Death Ravager.

All in all, this is easily one of my favorite of the 'little wasp skins', and though Kurasu has already released his, I think I might blow by with Aloicious and see if I can't pick myself up a little white buzzer to add to his collection.
Come see Kurasu's stables!

Since I had a flypoint already discovered on the very edge of the Southern Barrens (that is, I was able to get into the Northern Barrens without dying once), it was a simple run across the Northern Barrens to get my crocolisk.

Well, it would have been simple, had I not blundered through a Kolkar camp or two

So, two deaths later, and I have my crocolisk:

Named my croc Dracosaur. Draco- means dragon, and -saur means lizard. The funny little whiskers on vanilla crocs reminds me of Chinese depictions of dragons:

Others may find it ugly, but I like having a dragon lizard personally (fits with Shorelfon, who has the demon hunter face).

I wish I could report on Ankle Crack, but seeing as Shorelfon isn't yet to 20, that will have to wait :(
What I can say is that I would probably really appreciate it, as Shorelfon is a Survivalist that pulls aggro with incredible ease.

Now, for the stuff that bugged me (it's funny, I wasn't bothered by crocs over a year ago, back when Cialbi was using one to level). Xelophant did a nice [urlhttp://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic.php?p=193496#p193496]review of a Cataclysm crocolisk[/url], and I'm certain that all crocolisks share the same animations and skeleton. I noticed the 'back-breaking' run animation that had bothered Xelophant:
ImageImage
Not only does the body bend at such angles that makes the rescue worker in me scream "Broken bone!", but it does all this bending at an incredibly fast pace. If you ask me, the skeleton uses a sped-up walking animation that doesn't quite cut it.
Another thing that I found annoying but hadn't bothered me earlier was the snarling hisses. Hisses and snarls that are given off during combat don't bother me - combat isn't supposed to sound pleasant. It's just the random hissing, snarling sigh that bothers me some. It's like someone who's heavily congested or has a horribly hoarse throat is giving off a heavy sigh. It may just take getting used to on my part; besides, I could silence that sound with a blank sound file if it gets bad enough.

So, that night became rather interesting. I headed over to Loch Modan to see if I could still get a Fine Cloth Shirt from a certain quest (anyone who's gotten that shirt knows that it's certainly a fitting shirt for a hunter). Well, that night, it seems there was a meeting of the Loch Modan Rare-Spawn Society. I gave a /salute to Lord Condar, beat up some ogre who fancied himself "The Breaker", also got to beat up some Dark Iron twerp, and admired Nix the wasp from a safe distance.
Oh, and there were a couple more that I encountered:

Turns out that Ashtail hits HARD when you're at the minimum level needed to tame that fox.
So, I did a bit of a comparison between the two crocolisk skins. The only model has webbed feet, while the newer one has huge claws on the feet instead. The teeth are also different, with the new model appearing to have nothing but fangs for teeth. The newer model also appears to have a thicker skin. But, no difference in animation.

So, the jury is out on which crocolisk Shorelfon will keep - the dragon lizard, or the Loch Modan Monster. I think it will be a matter of whomever I actually bond with.

Merlyn, could you do me a favor and try to get all four of those skins to spawn once you tame one of those monkeys? I couldn't get the gray skin w/ dark gray face to appear on my monkey (reported this on the appropriate thread already, but would like more confirmation on something that is so RNG-dependent).
