Okay, I took screenshots, but being only snazzy with a PC, I'm not sure how the heck to get them out of my WoW screenshot folder and up to here.

So we'll just have to go with the power of words!

So I took my goblin huntress Matalina out to the Crossroads and headed north to tame the Grey Tallstrider. The tame was easy, as Matti is well above these birds in level, with them being 16 and 17 and Matti well into her 30's at 35/36. We had previously tamed and released Mazz, thinking we'd like the bird, but alas, it was not to be. But this bird, he was different. Though at first, I refused to name him due to the fact that I feared that once named, he'd end up staying.

First off, he was tall, taller than my goblin at even a low level. He wasn't hard to feed, as having a windserpent in the ranks, I kept cheese and bread, and sometimes fruit, in my bags. And then I picked a spot for him to move to and I took a good look at him out in his native plains. He's really a rather pretty fellow. His main body is grey, yeah, but it's got some kind of taupey color running through and under. His tail-floof and short feathered mane are black, and the color runs in his sturdy beak too. But there, any drabness ends, his crest, probably of horn if this was a real world creature, is shocking blue. This color runs down his neck in the front, fading and blending with the red that colors the rest of his neck up to his face and around his eyes. Devious eyes, intelligent eyes. But here is a loving and rather protective bird, as PetEmote showed me. He loves to snatch bugs out the air, has an affinity for small pebbles, and he keeps an eye out for danger, and towering head and shoulders over his mistress, he does a fine job of that. But he likes to lean-much to Matti's chargin-on his mistress, showing that he loves her even when she can't see over the tall grass.

He moves well. I love his walk, it's a complete strut. He's knows he's tough. His run is fluid enough for me, like a raptor, but more upright. And swimming, those long legs get thrust out behind and he does a Loch Ness impression if you swim near the surface. But he's so not a duck.

This is the my first hunter who will level with a tallstrider. I love the dustcloud ability. I even love the scrawking and screeching he does when doing in for an attack. He even holds up pretty well in a fight. He was a surprising addition to Matti's roster. So he got a name, he's Scaffold.

PvP: I don't, so I can't report on such.

:edit: After looking at this I think I picked up the Red Scorpid instead of the Pink. Still like the scorpids, but not this color.

So my random pet challenge was the Pink Scorpid

Now I’m a fan of the Scorpid. I like the way they move. They look to me extremely menacing, and the wave of their claws in the air adds to this look. Pink though is not my favorite color, and because of that color, I would not have looked at him.

I went to Tanaris to hunt one down. He was very easy to find as they roam out in the open desert there. Once tamed, I noticed that under his carapace (sp) his color was a bright purple, and his outer shell was more rose red than pink. Sorry to say, I still did not like the color combination. I was going to be cheeky and name him Pinky, but he raised is claws in defiance and murmured… I’m not pink.

Scorpids have the ability to disarm an enemy for 10 seconds. Great against both melee fighters and Hunters. Doesn’t really help with spell casters. I love using these pets in BG’s. Staying within our group, and sending this kind of pet after a pally or warrior, especially one that is already engaged with one of our melee fighters. That disarm feature gives our melee fighter an advantage, and with arrows smoking down on them, they are terminated pretty quickly. Or If I see an enemy hunter shooting within our group, the stripping of the range weapon for 10 seconds can be very crippling. The only thing I find bad with a pet like the scorpid, or the tenacity pets in general for the BG’s is the lack of the speed talent that a cunning or ferocity pet has. They can’t get down into the group as fast so I find that somewhat a hinderance. There is a talent called boars speed that will allow my pet to keep up with his opponent once he gets there, and it helps in getting him down there faster, along with the Charge talent on my tenacity pets with also helps, but not like the dash or dive that the other talent trees have.

As far as tanking is concerned, like most of the tenacity pets, he can easily hold his own and keep the mobs on him. I did not take him for a swim, so I do not know what he looks like in the water.

I do like the looks of the scorpid. Of the old world models, I like the black and the brown, and now the new grey. I also like the armored scorpid (madexx will be on my ally character). I have no problem with the amount of noise they make when in combat, and just love when the wave their claws around. As you can see, they look wicked next to my hunter, but… Pink/Purple is just not me.



I release Pinky back into the wild in Sholzar Basin while I waited for the lovely Aotona. She would be the pet that does the disarm that Pinky could do. Even though he told me not to call him that... the name to me stuck.

I was assigned the armored grey boar. I was a bit busy playing with my new Chromaggus, Xandros, over the last two days, but now I'm finally ready to settle in for my review of this guy. I just went out and nabbed him from Razorfen Kraul, and here's what I have to say, complete with screenshots unrelated to the paragraph subjects!



The legs on all the boars look stretched out because of the odd fur pattern, the tusks seem to jut through the lip, and the mane (and armor, though that's more of a skin thing) is very sharp and pixelly. Aside from that, I'm fairly pleased with the model. The teeth are much better done than I expected, considering some of the horrors you tend to see in older models, and I like that the mane isn't just one two-dimensional line of fur. It doesn't do much clipping through itself, which is good, because that's one thing I have a hard time dealing with. The walk is smooth, the run is smooth. Nothing jumps out at me as something I just couldn't stand in the long run.



Here he is, nobly testing the cheese for poison in my stead. What a pal. Anyway! As for the skin... I like this guy TONS more than I expected to. The fact that the armor seems to be bolted to him makes my stomach threaten to turn if I think about it too hard, but he seems so cheerful, it's not too hard to ignore that part. The red markings on the armor are very striking and attractive against the pale grey fur, and there are little darker grey spots of varying sizes here and there to add another level of detail. It's not something I ever would have tamed on my own because I saw it as a little dull, but now, having actually tamed it, I find it very charming. I'm so tempted to name him Igor. He just looks like an Igor, doesn't he?



Yes he does. His ability is... well, fairly useless to me, so I wouldn't bring him along for any extreme soloing. That puts him at a bit of a disadvantage in gameplay terms. And I can't speak for usefulness in groups and raids, because that's not usually something I do. But he's just so darn cute! And if you happen to play on Sisters of Elune, I've never seen anyone else with this skin tamed, so those people who like to be unique should enjoy it.



I think I'll be keeping Igor for now. I can't be sure I'll keep him forever, since I already have so many tenacity pets and in tanking terms he's inferior, but he's wormed his way into my heart, and unless I'm in truly dire need of a free space, he'll be there to entertain me with his playful wiggling. I enjoy doing these in my free time and when you weren't around for longer than usual, I decided to go ahead and toss some rolls. Hope I don't come off as too impatient. XD

So, the blue turtle was my challenge this time:


So... I ran to the barrens and tamed him. Not that exciting.


But once I started to really stare at his face... I noticed some flaws... Like the inverted eyes O.o ...creepy...


But I really liked the beautiful blues and yellows, and the scaly patterns on his legs and tail.


And his shiny shell was pretty, too!



I went a little overboard taking screenshots, though.


And the turtle models in general don't seem to be as pixelated and horrible as some of the older models tend to be.

Eventually, the photoshoot was over and I went out to kill some stuff with my new turtle friend, and he suprised me by how well he tanked. Not really having had many tank pets (a Boar, a Gorilla and a Bear over several characters and that was it) I was very pleased with how well he held aggro, even when he was a level or two below me. I didn't really expect to be suprised by his tanking abilities or his looks (okay, so I lied about only having a Boar, Gorilla and Bear as tank pets -- one time I had tamed a turtle... though I promptly abandoned him), but I started to like him more and more! The swim/run/walk animations, etc. didn't impress me that much, they all looked kind of weird, along with quite boring idle animations, but I didn't mind all that much, and I usually don't swim/run/walk around on my characters just staring at their pets, and while I'm leveling/dungeoning/battlegrounding I don't really care about what my character's pet's animations look like . All and all, I ended up liking this pet a lot!

So for some reason I keep forgetting about the pet I was rolled for this. >_<

I was assigned

I used to have this guy when this hunter was still a baby so I traveled out to Winterspring to pay ol' Frosting a visit.


These guys are kind of interesting looks wise. They have a white body with a blue mane, blue tail, and blueish-grey wing highlighting. One of the biggest things that throws me off with these guys is that their tongues are always hanging out and their mouths are always open. Their wings are also rather tattered looking which, to me, is worse than the holes bats have in their wings.



For animations, these guys are pretty simple. They just flap by your side and their feet do this sort of funny little dance underneath them. Their wingspans are HUGE so anyone who hates big pets probably won't like these guys since they hover near your feet instead of over your shoulder. The great news about big pets is that they hinder your opponents view in PvP, always a plus.

These guys are pretty awesome pets. They have a nearly permanent slow, and they can channel froststorm breath for AoE (while standing still or moving). I imagine chimaeras can be pretty useful in PvE, but I feel that their true worth probably shines in PvP. I decided to queue for WG for shits and giggles since it was going to start soon. It was basically three level 85 Horde versus an 80 lock and 81 rogue. Needless to say, the Alliance lost.

As I haven't PvPed in a while on my hunter, I kept forgetting to Hunter's Mark the rogue and they kept getting away. Then I finally remembered that I could use the chimaera to try and yank the vanishing rogue--worked like a charm.

Froststorm breath is really cool looking as well. ^_^


Overall I think this guy is a pretty good pet, and I think Frosting will be sticking around to put up with me potentially toying around with BM PvP.

Spinach saved me from a dirty pirate that dismounted me while doing dailies...*rawr*


We discovered a little house in the hills near SW that had a ton of sheep (sorry sheep but the critter achievement beckons). A very angry gnome came out of the house and yelled at us, I killed the last sheep not realizing it was named and it exploded flinging both of us out of the mountains. Spinach enjoyed his first flight.


We ended the day relaxing and enjoying the scenery...


- Animations:
He has the same animations as the raptor mounts which is bouncy with tappy toes. He has a swim animation but it looks a bit odd as his hands just kind of dangle, but other than that the rest of the running, swimming and idle animations are very smooth. Even his general look isn't bad for an old school model.

- Sound effects:
This pet can be a bit noisy if you are not used to a vocal pet but they are very realistic noises.

- Food requirements:
Meat only

- Tanking ability:
He tanked my Tol Barad and Wildhammer dailies at lvl 82 like a champ!

- DPS output:
I took him into my instance and he did very well considering that after dailies he had only made it to lvl 83.

- Pet family abilities:
Tear Armor, Instant, 6 sec cooldown
Tears at the enemy's armor with the raptor's talons, reducing it by 4%. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts 30 sec.

- Utility:
This is a great pet to have if you are lacking a sunder armor in your group/raid!

-Overall:
I really liked this pet much more that I thought I would. I have always preferred the outland model and didn't have plans to add a Raptor to my stable. I am keeping him a bit longer and seeing what he is like in raids once he gets up to level 85 (he is currently 84 after my dailies and instance). When I tamed him he was separated from the other raptors like him and I felt drawn to him. I had quite a bit of fun on our adventure together and have started to feel a bond forming that I can't explain, so he may be sticking around for the long run.

I love the grey tallstrider skin for that exact reason. It's so obviously based on a cassowary, imo.
