Thorn

((after the hunt from heck, I finally tamed Sambas today... and decided to write the story, more or less... it's not the best, but it worked for me; enjoy!))

“Yeah, well, I like you about as much as you like me, so there…” Arisia glared at the black furred worg that paced in irritation on the far side of the clearing. The blood elf huntress shifted in discomfort, uncomfortable with the odd chill breezes that ruffled the fringe of blonde hair that peeked out from under her helmet. Sighing, she turned and scanned the clearing yet again, wondering if she was just wasting her time.

Since she’d seen the handsome golden lion with the startlingly blue eyes in Orgrimar a few weeks back, she’d decided she wanted one to run at her side. After doing research, she’d found where the rare beasts ran, and leaving her usual travelling companion (her younger brother Caylon, a Holy Priest who felt it his duty to keep Arisia company as she wandered) warm and safe in Silvermoon, she’d set out on the hunt for a new companion.

At first it had been amusing; she knew the spots where the great cats had been seen, even the greatest of them, their Pride leader Sambas. Choosing one to be her base, she’d sat for hours, going from spot to spot every hour to see if any of the cats were wandering about… all for nothing. She’d sat there in the wind, the sleet, the rain… the bone shivering nights and the cheerless days. Occasionally other hunters, those who also craved one of the beasts, would pass by; both Alliance and Horde, most were polite, but distant—their quarry first and foremost in their minds.

And then there was that fardling worg. He was rangy, thin, and a nasty bit of fur. Arisia could not count the number of deer, marmot, or other small furry beast the work had raced up to slay, leaving the meat to just spoil in the sun. Tempted to take him out and make the clearing a better place, she stayed her hand—after all, this was his home first and despite the fact they’d been sharing the are for the last two weeks, he still…

The snarl startled the slight woman, making her jump back instinctively. The worgs eyes were lit with his usual hatred, and he managed one good slash to her right hand before she could evade him. He snarled and pounced, forcing Arisia to use her polearm, striking him back, giving her time to tuck, roll and pull her crossbow, glad there was a quarrel loaded. She thought to call one of her pets, always available with a single thought, but the worg hit again, distracting her.

They began a dance around the clearing with the worg slashing and trying to get a better attack and the huntress getting in quickly loaded shots. Bloody fingers finally grasped the token in her pouch and she threw one of her frost traps, freezing the worg in his tracks. Taking the moment to reload and get a good distance, Arisia aimed, and fired rapidly, finally dropping the stupid beast. Taking a shaky breath, she was about to wipe her forehead when she realized that the first slash had been rather deep and was still bleeding heavily.

Tossing on a hasty bandage, She left the worg without even bothering to skin the beast, kicking it as she turned and whistled to summon her blue windkitty, Rain. Mounting up, she directed him to the closest Horde base; she wanted to get her hand clean and if possible, have a healer look at it. She took a different path than her usual, curing the worg to be brought back to life, only to be killed again, over and over. Lost in this semi amusing reverie, of course the lion she’d been searching for wasn’t even in her thoughts. Her luck proved itself once again as when Rain spun, a gust making the windrider drop a bit, letting Arisia spot the huge cat standing near the huge boulder.

Her pain was forgotten; everything was forgotten – the lion’s graceful pacing filling her field of vision. She directed Rain to land near the beast, and as his head swiveled, the sapphire eyes locking with hers, Arisia began the mental chant that would link them together forever. Like the worg, the lion pounced, striking at her, the natural wish for freedom warring with the bonding until that moment that was like magic, that flash between both animal and Hunter that sealed them, soul to soul, forever.

Beaming, Arisia threw her new friend a chunk of the savory dried meat she kept on hand for treats, pleased when he chose to rub his velvety muzzle against her before taking the food. “Good boy” she murmured, calling her heartstone to bring her home to the inn in Orgrimar The lion made a soft chuffing sound, moving in close. A fast thought sent Rain to follow her and her newest when he could… and idly she thought that she really needed to get that hand looked at… and she hoped that worg, wherever he was, was happy…

Congratulations! I got Sambas today myself. It really is different when he's your pet and not somebody else's.
