Random Pet Challenge [v3.0]

If you look closely, you may notice that my gear looks a little... lowbie since you last saw me. To be completely honest with y'all, I did my latest challenge on alt!Daranara, since bigkid!Daranara was at the time wrapped up in taming Olm. However, this may have worked out even better than I had thought!

Anyway, on to the review! My target this time:



The brand-new grey moth! Dara here hadn't been there, but being alliance it was no trouble! She had much less trouble than my baby goblin (who is not the point of the review and will not be mentioned further).

The moths were super not hard to find, once we got to the area, as you can see:



Taming is no challenge, either. I short order, I had one of my own:



I named her Penumbra, which I thought was a pretty pretty name for a pretty little moth.

Looks Review:

I will admit up front I'm not a huge fan of moths. They have never clicked with me on a hunter outside of my orc huntress. But this colorset isn't bad, I must admit. It isn't the stark, too-clean white of the white moths, and it isn't the "white moths taking a dust bath" of the tan moths I never cared for. I enjoy the contrast of the dark legs and horn compared to the light body, and the purple eyes are nice.

Those of you who remember my last review, I will tell you mr. grey moth also has some of the color-borrowing going on, though I did not notice it as much as I did on the worm.

Her animations are okay, nothing to write home about. The flapping doesn't bother me much, though the fact she's so low to the ground does. Most flying pets seem to be higher up; I think the moth could benefit from that, a bit.

As far as fighting goes, she seemed to be okay. I tried to run a couple of dungeons with her, but my connection was giving me fits, so I never managed to finish one with her. I can see how her special might be useful, but we were mostly killing beasties in stranglethorn, so there wasn't much of a chance for her to show me.

Overall, she's... okay. Nothing special, but since I have the room I'll give her a longer chance to grow. Maybe as we level.

It was amazing how it changed colours with the environment; really pretty. So when my Nesingwary hunter(s) are high enough I'll be taming one of them too!

Hah, that's incredible. Serendipity at work if I ever saw it. I was just eyeing these boars earlier today (in Westfall) and pondering taming one. I'll go fetch one out of Duskwood as soon as I'm done in Redridge.

I must say, however, that the way this works is that the pet assignments are picked using a random process. If the pet they come up with doesn't work with your restrictions then the process has to be repeated. Said process is hardly instant; a random number generator is used, then Kormai figures out which pet class that corresponds to, then another roll is done to figure out which pet skin from that family to assign. Making your restrictions preclude every single pet in your stable will quickly make this process excessively lengthy, and Kormai is doing this voluntarily on her own time. So, if she assigns you a pet in your stables, could you please just do a report on the pet anyways?

The restrictions option is there in case there is a pet family that you cannot stand. For example, Loethlin is arachnophobic. Therefore, she asks to not be assigned any spiders.

Meet Tony the undead hawk.


First, I'll explain Tony's name a bit. When I first showed my boyfriend this pet, he said "that looks like the symbol Tony Hawk uses." I forgot about it and asked him what I should name this guy, and he reminded me of our discussion. And thus is how Tony earned his name. =P
The lowest level tamable version of this skin is only obtainable through a quest, however, with 4.0.6, Blizzard has added new, higher level versions of these guys in Zul'Drak and Icecrown.

On to looks. I was surprised to find myself pretty impressed with this guy looks wise. The model is actually really well done and looks to be in decent quality.


His vertebrae sticking out of his back made me go "O_o" at first, but doesn't creep me out enough that I wouldn't tame this guy. Like I said, it's a pretty solid looking model with some really nice touches on it. His face and feet have no skin on them. What feathers he does have are a neat greyish-brown color and he has bandages wrapped around his body (to hold it together I guess).

These guy have animations pretty standard to the bird families. They flap in place (next to your shoulder thankfully and not by your feet), they fight with their beaks and claws. The noises they make are pretty cool, very fitting to an undead bird I think. Also, they do perform trick! ^_^

Their ability, snatch, can actually come in very handy in both PvE and PvP. Disarming a hard hitting mob in PvE will make both a healer's life easier in a dungeon, and make your life easier soloing (less healing on the pet). The bright side is that with Grace of the Mantis, cunning pets can even function as pseudo tanks (and perform quite well at it actually). Disarming unsuspecting melee in PvP is also fun as well, and PvP is probably where these guys shine the best.

Well, I'm glad the piggy got rolled for me, as I was already considering taming one and the roll made me decide. And he's staying While I may end up swapping him out at times, I'm not abandoning him ever.

First off, a quick review of the family and skin.

I've never had a boar before. Well, okay, I lie, I have a boar-on-fire on my goblin hunter, but it's more of a vanity pet than anything else.

Boar animations are really cute. The run, the swim, the attack animations and especially the idles - one where the boar sniffs the ground (and his nose flattens and goes longer and awww cute), and one when he jumps and looks around all threatening-like. D'aww. The sounds are pretty cute too.

Petopia calls the skin black, but he's more of a really dark blue. That originated his name - I was originally thinking of "Indigo", but then settled for "Ink" instead, as the former felt too serious for this feisty critter.

He holds threat about as well as pets do at this level - better than a ferocity or cunning pet (due to Charge buffing his first attack), but not by much. But then again I'm not terribly good at holding back and letting him get threat before I start shooting at stuff, I'm too used to my higher-level hunters having additional threat-buffing talents on their pets (that and Misdirect).

His special is... eh... additional damage taken from bleeds doesn't do anything for me, but he's cute and if I were hugely fussed about pet specials I'd be lugging around a turtle. Which I'm not. (Well, not yet, I want Ghamoo-ra from BFD, but I'm not getting rid of piggy.)

His diet is awesome, as far as I'm concerned. Anything edible, he'll eat, which is terrific for characters below level 25. After that, any pet of mine lives mostly on Mend Pet and cuddles, but it's nice to have non-fussy pets anyway.

And that's my piggy. First one I ran into when I turned off the road.



The boars are mixed in with plagued, evil flower elementals. While killing a few of them to get a feel for the pet, I spotted a rare one - a giant version of the pumpkin pet from the halloween event - and decided he'd make a good target.



Rare mobs give a hell of a lot of XP. (For example, I got 113 XP from a normal mob of the same level as the rare, whereas I got 1964 XP from the rare.) When timed right, this gives hunters a chance to experience something that normally only warlocks do...



...the simul-ding. I went from 25 to 26, whereas Ink went from 22 straight to 25.

I've had lots of adventures with Ink so far, from saving Darkshire...



(You can just barely see Ink there, wedged under Stitches' leg. Also note how the town's on fire, and yet nobody's bothering to haul buckets to the fountain.)

...to looking for crabs in Stormwind's canals...



...to visiting royalty...



(They don't look terribly happy about posing for a picture, do they? Do you reckon I should've tossed some valentine quest items at them first so they'd have little hearts for me? Maybe that would've make them look friendly...)

...to learning how to pretend to be dead.



(Ink doesn't think I smell dead, and can't believe anybody would fall for it. I told him to shush.)

Ok, I would have never thought I actually would like a Silithid, but Jitters has grown on me. I don't know if it is my sound card but I really did not notice any idle noise from him, but love how he is constantly moving and jittering around, hence the name. Luckily I like the color green so that was good, and I have grown to like how they look. I had a spider but I like the silithid look better and still get the same web ability. The only thing I have not done is Pvp, but I haven't felt like PvP the last few days, but I sure he will be great. The attack sounds aren't the coolest but they don't bother me. And I apologize for being such a noob, I had thought I read enough to understand the rules, but guess I didn't, hehe. Well here is a picture of me and Jitters, I am eventually race changing to human to help my guild out.
