How to Solo: Whale Shark [Hunter Class]

Hey guys! I sucessfully solo'd the Whale Shark as an MM Hunter. But you need a lot of patience and time on your hands. Im gonna throw in some tips my spec I used, rotation, and the time it took to kill this Enourmous Whale.

Step 1: GET SILVERDRAGON ADDON, Activate the Golden Ring on your Mini Map (Do not Track Anything it will become confusing due to the loads of mobs in this area)
Step 2: Copy this Spec - http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/l ... /secondary (Note: You do not need any fancy shmancy gear, just a good RDPS Wep.)
Step 3: Make sure Aspect of the Fox is on at all times. This is very important because you will kite Whale Shark.
Step 4: Here's your Rotation, Hunter's Mark, Serpent Sting, Steady Shotx2, Chimera Sting, Steady Shotx3, and Cobra Shot.

This can take up to an Hour depending on your gear. My gear it took 45 Mins. Now heres the most important tip im going to give you:
The Whale Shark is bugged because if you become too far away it will give you a "Line of Sight" glitch and he will reset. You have to keep the Whale Sharks DOT (not damage over time) half way to 3/4 within that Silverdragon Golden Ring on your mini map at all times or else you will become the Whale Sharks snack.

I hope this helps and y'all get your achievement without the struggle of finding a group!

FUN FACT: Bringing out a Lowbie Pet towards the end of the fight will give your pet approx 123.6k Exp. Sense I just tamed Olm the Wise that day (He was level 82) he got 123.6k Exp. Just make sure your pet has no abilities active because you want to have hate that whole entire fight. GOOD LUCK!

It was scary, because you appear to be in his hitbox, and if you go more than 20 yards away I think it is, he resets. I know you've mentioned this, but ohmygod, being that close to it IS scary if you've been hit by him before. Awesome tip about pet xp, by the way!

i use rangedisplay, kept myself between 8-15yds from him. hardest part is the pull, if you're too close he'll one shot you, if too far away, he'll evade.

Not sure I understand the need for that particular spec, particularly taking EVERY SINGLE point in the marks tree. There are some talents that are incredibly useful for sure, but some that really don't seem to serve a need for the point there from a strictly "kiting whale shark" approach. Also, wouldn't it make more sense to put the 3 survival points into ranged haste instead of stamina? It doesn't matter your stamina, it will kill you if it hits you once.

Beyond that, I would imagine any half decent spec will do if you have the patience. Though BM would be at a disadvantage (although leaving your pet out but on passive would give you BW/TBW every minute and a half.

Fire mage is also a very nice spec to do it on. Being able to scorch while strafing is neat.

I think any ranged class can solo these guys from what I've read on MMO-C.

I think fire mages may have it the easiest, but I've heard of a boomkin doing it too.

Yah, I can't compare to other specs, but iirc it took me about twenty minutes to do it as BM. After awhile I sent pet, on passive with Growl off, but I kept a fairly close eye on Omen.

I did it tonight as survival (I was bored and the thread inspired me). The rangedisplay addon that was mentioned earlier was a huge help. It was probably about 20 minutes total (after a handful of "figuring out the magic range" resets).

Survival is really nice and pretty easy. With cobra aspect of the fox you can pretty much do your normal dps rotation. Lock and Load procs a lot. I couldn't send my pet in at all, even towards the end... Whale Shark would just instantly fear him away. So I left him out on passive for the wolf crit buff as well as call of the wild. And because I wanted to level him. He went from fresh 82 to 83. If it wasn't so mind-numbing to kite the things, I'd intentionally kill more to level up pets in the future.

THEN, I decided I needed the achievement for my priest too. She took a lot longer - about 40 minutes. She doesn't have a lot of instants and I was very picky about what ranges I would let her cast VT or Mind Blast. Plus after about 85% I just stopped getting Shadow Clones to spawn (that would've made it much faster).

I'm tempted to try it on a character that isn't 85... to see how much xp they would get. Maybe when my boomkin gets to 83 or 84 and gets some semi-okay gear (she's a bit behind on the questing curve).

Fire Mage spec'd hunters are by far the Most OP and best to use here

Random fact: If you solo the Whale Shark at level 83, with rested xp, you get 199k xp and some change.

Less than I would expect, given how much xp pets get.

Im too paranoid to possibly get close to the whale. I got a 26" screen and if his body makes up about half the width i freak out and swim the other way xD I'll.. i'll try to gather my confidence cause the acheiv is rediculiously epic imo xD its just.. so random.. and ive seen a few different posts on trade of ppl gathering a raid against him so far (dunno if they did it tho) xD

Well I can give you a hint as to how you're not going to solo it - in melee!

Yeah, as far as I can tell, melee classes can't solo it, at least not anything reliably. A paladin with the talent to increase judgement range could do it with just judgements, but that would take a long long time. As a warrior, I'm not sure how you're going to be able to hit it without it hitting you for A LOT. I survived it once on my priest with a well-timed deterrence during a screwup, and he hit for 59k (after a 90% reduction).

Honestly, I don't think it's worth it to try to level off of whale shark, at least not time-wise. The xp I got from him at 83, while rested, is about 4-5 quests worth. The time it took me was a lot longer than 4-5 quests. It's a fun little aside that I've become amused with (next up is to respec my mage and swim around on her), but I'm not going to level any of my characters on it (though, maybe a few pets before they autolevel pets to our level).

I was initially hoping, given that pets get over 100k xp, for the kill to give a lot more xp to characters. Maybe there's a cap on how much I can get per any kill at any given level (perhaps I should test this by trying to kill it on say, my level 47 warlock - with water breathing potions and such, plus an afternoon to kill). Maybe I was hoping there would be an oversight on blizzard's part and we'd get close to 1 mil xp per kill and make for some fairly easy, if not a bit monotonous levelling.

I tried this and it was all going very nicely until SUDDENLY he got a surge of speed from I-don't-know where and was like *ZOOM* *SMASH* X_X
Wah. It was working better in BM except he kept resetting >.<
