All righty, Venjin and Rorshach reporting in for duty! :D
Image

I got the purple silithid wasp for my first pet theme challenge and I learned to love these sort of under-appreciated wasp models. :)
Rorshach is a very handsome looking wasp, the white and black coloring complements him nicely.
Image
(Side note, wasps photograph (aka screenshot) beautifully.) I love the overall look of the silithid wasp models, especially their faces.

These guys are very neat to look at from behind as well as they have a beautiful back and wing pattern (which is how Rorshach got his name :P ).
Image

Wasps are busy little guys. Their wings are always fluttering (obviously) and they often clean themselves so if you like quiet pets, these guys aren't for you. Their wings make a humming noise that I find to be rather soothing, others may find it annoying. One thing I like about wasps is that unlike some of the other low-flying pets, these guys don't get in the way.

They have a neat little flying animation as they run next to you, makes me think of how a real wasp would fly if I weren't so terrified of them to study one for long enough.
Image

The wasp ability is Sting, a 2 second stun. This ability is yay and nay for me. It's only two seconds and it puts any other stun you or your group might have on DR (diminishing returns--ie the more you use an ability like a stun, the less effective it becomes). This could be useful in PvE if a stray mob aggroes to your healer, you can send the wasp over there for some quick CC until the tank can get it back under control.

Overall, as much as I like Rorshach, I like Sorbet, my purple wasp, better next to Venjin. Rorshach will be getting rehomed on my white pet collector though as soon as she's high enough to tame Qirot. :)

My random pet was the yellow raptor model, below is my report! Hope there aren't too many photos, but I enjoyed myself alot..

Muira is often hired to track and hunt animals that have become a problem and it was for this reason she found herself hired to deal with a raptor issue in the Wetlands. After talking to some locals it seemed that the raptors attacks came from a cave located in the hills.

Image

Fighting her way through the caves she encountered the source of the problem, a large powerful matriarch!

Image

Muria realised that she was only protecting her eggs and she couldn't bring herself to kill the animal.

Image

But then of course she had the problem of the eggs.

Image

She couldn't just leave them there, undefended so she carefully packed them away in her bags.

Taking her new found friend Queenie, she returned to her regular duties fighting the Scourge in the Plaguelands.

Queenie was a fierce protector and defended her new mistress with teeth and claw.

Image

She glided through water with grace and elegance, more so than a female dwarf.

Image

After an hour or so of intense battles Muira felt something moving in her packs and on close inspection one of the eggs hatched!

Image

Mother and baby seemed like they needed a rest so she went back to Ironforge so they could gather their strength.

Image

I shall be keeping 'Queenie' on Muira as finding the Matriarch up, with the egg as well helped them click together. I have a brown/gold/red theme I am working on with her pets so she works really well. I loved her fighting animation and the way her claws click the ground. She didn't seem too noisy but then I usually run with a cat as a dps pet.

The colours work really well and the beads and feathers offset the model nicely. I did one random dungeon with her and her special ability would be useful if no warrior was in the group. In normal questing she was a level or too lower than me at the start, but kept aggro really well considering.

I just need to think of a good name now as Queenie was not allowed! <pout>

Ok, I can honestly say that I have been lucky enough to always get pets that are well below my level, which is an ok thing for me. Well I get assigned the red wind serpent, which I always thought that I would like. So I went to the Swamp of Sorrows to get one, which I did of course.

[img]PetChallegeFoundOne.jpg[/img]

Now I did give this pet a shot, but alas I just could not find it in myself to like it. While the flapping of the wings is relatively quiet and the attack noise don't bother me, the way it moves when just sitting next to me for some reason I can't stand. Now I did manage to actually go swimming with this one and take a pic(looks just like when you are running with it, just in water).

[img]PetChallegeSwimming.jpg[/img]

And the last screenshoot I got was just me and the wind serpent hanging out. And no I just could not think of a name for it, probably because I just did not feel a connection in any way even though I tried.

[img]PetChallegeJustHangingOut.jpg[/img]

Well as always I am loving this so.

The .jpg files won't turn into images by putting img tags around them. You have to upload them to a third party site (like Photobucket or ImageShack), copy them here, and then put the tags around them. :)

Or just go into the image by clicking into it (So that the image is alone in it's own page), copying the url, then pasting it in the image tags instead. :P

That too, but a jpg loaded from a computer file (which is what it looks like peshooter did) won't be able to do that because it won't be hosted online to have a URL. :)

I know Photobucket has on option for sharing on each pic you upload to it and all you have to do is copy and paste the image code; they do all the tagging and whatnot for you.

GREEN NETHER RAY

Thanks for the roll, Kormai--hope Champions Online is treating you well!

My task this round was to tame the Green Nether Ray:
Image
Model: Nether Ray
Skin: Green
Animations: Smooth wave-like idle, with side-to-side gaze.
Sound effects: Hollow roar.
Food requirements: Fungus, meat. A bit specific, but my Mend Pet glyph helps cut down on food stacks.
Tanking ability: Holds fairly good aggro against typical NPCs.
DPS output: With BM special abilities used, 3.5k DPS at level 83. Promising for max level.
Pet family abilities: Nether Shock (spell interrupt and 2 sec. lockout).
Utility: Definitely PvP pet, potentially PvE if her DPS increases at max level. Probably won't bring her raiding, but random heroics are a possibility.

This was another surprise to me as, much like the Phase Hound dog, I'd never tamed a Nether Ray before, either! Behold, the Green Nether Ray in her natural habitat:
Image

Her colors blend in with the environment, save for the glowing beacons upon her forehead and belly. Her mouth reminds me of a lamprey's, which is fairly freaky in its own right. I knew she'd make a fun PvP pet, even while she chewed on me during the tame:
Image

Meet Lambda! The name popped into mind as an homage to the lights on her head and belly, and also for the sinusoidal way she moves (sorry, I'm a nerd...):
Image

We immediately went for a dive in the Bog. Lambda has a nice smooth movement animation already, which transfers nicely into the water:
Image

We also repaid a visit to the Worg volunteer in Twilight Highlands. He'd already died to my Phase Hound (Chupacabra), so was resigned to his fate the second time around. Lambda has a very smooth attack animation, and whips her tail right into the face of her opponent. BLAM!:
Image

...it does seem that her special ability (Nether Shock, spell interrupt and 2 sec. lockout) is not smart-cast, as she used it repeatedly on our poor non-magical Worg friend. However, I can see this as a useful ability in battlegrounds, and will take her in for a test run once she hits lvl 85. All in all, I do enjoy this pet and was very pleased to see how well she matched my hunter:
Image

She now has a home in my stable! I'd love to roll again, as I've already been pleasantly surprised by the previous two. Thanks!

So my lowbie hunter got the color changing cataclysm crocolisk (tongue twister?), which is found in the swampy area near the Greymane wall. Easy for me, since I'm questing in Silverpine. Apparently this area phases out after a certain point in your questing, but higher level players shouldn't have this problem. This model changes between white and green/blue, and I grabbed one that was currently white as it suited Finick's color scheme (black/white/grey) better.

Image
Not the face!

Of course, as soon as I flew back to the area I was questing in he turned green and stayed that way. I have this same croc on my main hunter, Tydarus, and more often than not he is green. Which is fine, but sometimes you want the white version, you know?

Image
Yes you're very pretty but please turn white.

Anyway, I said in one of my previous reviews that I like the new cataclysm croc models. They are not as noisy as the old world models and are more hi-res. Their special, which mine was too low level to have for this particular challenge, is a movement slow which can be useful if you pull aggro, it gives your pet time to catch up and pull the mob back.

I'll take another one for Tydarus, please!
Level 74, exotics yes, and no monkeys

So here is my EXTREMELY late report.

I had the black devilsaur! Scary. :D

Image

I was in Outlands so I decided I would just grab Tyrantus. For a big devilsaur he was kind of difficult for me to find, lol.

Image

Easy tame, although I was stepped on a lot and he called in a minion.

Image

The first thing that struck me about this model is the eyes! They're so... blue! And they're a different blue than the rest of his body so they stand out (and he's black so they stand out even more!). I also love the teal/blue stripes on his body and face. It really makes him stand out and look much more "other worldly" compared to the red and green devilsaur models.

Image

Rawr! Bestial wrath! I love how big these guys get. It's like "OMFG A DINOSAUR WTF?!?" instead of a huge cat or worg or something.

Image
Image

I LOVE HOW THEY SWIM. They move their itty bitty stick arms like they're actually helping them move!

Image

I also love how they run. It feels very natural to me since they kind of stomp around and will randomly roar! I know some people don't like how he roars since at first it's like a raptor squeak and then a REAL roar.

Image

He wasn't too happy being in Orgrimmar... Too many people on a busy server, I think. We just didn't click. I already gave my heart to my red devilsaur named Altan and didn't need another. :) I went all the way back to Netherstorm to let him rule in his little "habitat" with his raptor minions. I have this skin on my NE hunter and named her Mahdis, which supposedly means moonlike. They get along much better and I think he would go best with a night elf or a character with darker colored hair. For some reason, color matching with my pets can be a big deal.

Tyger: I totally agree that Sorbet looks better with your hunter. I think the black and white one would go better with undead or something.

Muira: Mommy raptor and baby raptor are so cute together!

Peshooter: I know exactly what you mean that you can't stand them idle beside you....their wings flap in this weird way and I can't see them being able to "slither" on the ground at all. I have the spiked outlands model on my Worgen and I like how it looks but it's still weird.

Concussion: Do you play? I only started on Saturday at my former roommates insistence. It's nice that it's free but I gotta say the UI leaves something to be desired. I guess every mmo can't be wow...And because it's free I will likely continue to play it. Guess which class I picked...the Marksman of course! I wish I could have pets :(

Tydarus: I'll go with what Cialbi said, you should totally get Ripscale! And I'll try to remember: no more crocs for you haha!

Miraga: At least you did it, even if it was late, right? And for the longest time I didn't have a devilsaur and avoided them at all costs. Then I realized as a BM hunter I really should have one...my Worgen got this model and I really do like it a lot! They look good together.

Please Blizz, make my worgen a draenei again!

Peshooter
I gave you an alternative because I don't know how excited you will be to find out you have to go through a quest line and grind some stuff to be able to summon this pet.

Diary of a Grey Rhino

Oh look, it's dawn again. Looks like it's gonna snow again. Time to move out and wander happily on the tundra-- it's darn cold, but what can you do, right? Dig dig dig, eat uncovered grass... dig dig dig... eat uncovered grass... see nasty bitey thing... charge and stomp... kill... stomp stomp stomp.... turn back to dig and wait wait-- what's this? This two legger is trying to reach me! Oh, HELLS NO ... gone run and stomp and...

well crap... freeze trap... that sucked and well crap again she's reaching my thoughts and telling me we'll be friends and work together and...

...

:: swallows nice cakey treat ::

OK, so this isn't so bad...

Twolegger says my name is Wooly... well, fine; ignore the fact I might have a name...

::swallows another nice cakey treat::

Hmm, Wooly it is then- and we're going where? Sholozar? Nope, never heard of it-- but hell, for another cakey thing I'll go with you, Twolegger.

hey, wait I don't wanna blip to this Sholozar Whatsis....

Oh wait... its warm here-- I like warm... what do you want, Twolegger? OK, sure, I'll go kill that other Rhino-- he's bigger than me, but a wimp...
Image See?

Ooooooh.... and I really LIKE this waterfall thing...Image I like it a LOT...

Yeah, let's go kill things for a while, Twolegger! ::eats another nice cakey thing::

============================

OK-- that over; I felt bad that I took this long to report. LOL Wanted to do a fun one...

While a rhino might be for others, sadly, Wooly was released after I played with him for two days. We did some dailies, we did some leather farming, we even raced about in some low level instances, but it just did not click. I think they're cute in a large, hairy way, and I think when I make a Taurean hunter I might try one with that -- somehow I can see a thoughtful Taurean (how I tend to play the race) with a big, thoughtful wooly rhino. ::grin:: And for those who wonder-- he was set free in the nice warm Scholozar, near the palm trees and waterfall, where I am sure he lives a very happy life :D

They tank well, the charge is nice (I have heard it was nicer patches ago when they had killer knockback) but honestly, not really earth-changing for me. They eat bread, cheese, fruit and fungus, so remember to keep some on hand (wish there was a way to harvest fruit or fungus all over the way you can fish...) and they are exotic, so you MUST have the beastmaster spec to tame one.

I'm up for another:

Honestly? Rhino's are nice-- I think if I did more instancing, I'd have one in my stable; but since I normally solo and run older instances, it's less of a necessity.

I think I need to do an overhaul of both main hunters stables again and release some of the pets I haven't been using. Most of the ones I'm not using right now I'm keeping because I like how they look. And since my Nesingwary Kormai is more than half way to max level she can start taking over the pretty, much less used ones from Kormai and Kari's stables. And then Kormai can get a rhino and a Madexx haha!

As for your random roll; I'm really liking the outland armored models but I'm glad I rolled you green because I've never seen that colour (nor have I seen yellow either) and since they are newer, they have yet to be reviewed here.

I utterly love my yellow outlands model chimaera! :D

Also, Arisia, I wouldn't bring a rhino, personally, to a group instance, they're tenacity and most tanks are picky about mobs being knocked around. I think that rhinos shine best in PvP. :)

Good luck
Luckily since I had a warp stalker, I knew I would like it overall. Now I actually got to choose which one and I will say I am glad I went for the black one because it was quite fun grinding a little to get it. Overall I like the low profile of the warp stalker compared to say a bear, and on this particular one, I love the coloring of it. Luckily I don't have to have my pet match me, I just have to like the pet. I didn't notice any idle noise with the warp stalker, which I named Spike. I do however think it is funny that sometimes while running from one place to another, Spike seemed to have to hurry to catch up. Spike's swims kinda like a dog in the sense that it looks like what a dog would swim like. The attack noise is not annoying and not too bad. Now since I like Spike my black warp stalker, I got rid of my white one.

Here is a pick of us just hanging out on a rock in Grizzly Hills.

Image

And here is one of us swimming.

Image

And last, here is one of us just killing some bears.

Image

Hopefully I did the images right so everyone can see them.

And as always I would love to do another one, I think I might be having too much fun doing this but I don't care because it is fun.

Re: Random Pet Challenge [v3.0]

Unread post by Moonlost »

Here is another Moonlost Pet report!
This time, my goblin Slumlost was assigned to pick up the Orange Dragonhawk.

So, these guys are pretty simple to pick up for Horde, I just took the teleporter to Silvermoon, went out the gates, ran to the west and there they were. First one I saw was tamed pretty simply. I can imagine alliance having a tougher time with this, as they'd have to slog all the way there through EPL and Ghostlands.

Anyway, I named this guy Venant, after one of the four Royal stars. I felt it was appropriate. :)
Venant and I soon found ourselves in the Eastern Plaguelands and working for the Argent Crusade, occasionally helping a travelling caravan as we moved. Venant seemed rather aloof of our situation, but quickly became engaged as we started to thin the local scourge population. He was not happy being forced to follow along behind Fiona's wagon though.

~The Review~

Model: Details and anatomy of dragonhawks are... weird. Like a mix between reptiles, birds and insects. It took me a while to get used to the look to be honest, but I admit to having it grow on me. The model itself is rather smooth looking and pretty detailed. You can definitely tell this was a post-vanilla model.
The first thing I noticed about Venant's movements is that he is a very floaty pet. He doesn't move so much as just hover there in the air, which I've heard can be a little off-putting. I personally don't mind it so much. But oh wow, this guy looks amazing when he flies. It's as if I have a rippling wave of fire beside me, it's awesome. Anyone pining for a phoenix pet should seriously check out the orange dragonhawk. Swimming motions are pretty much the same, only slowed down somewhat and reducing the "rippling fire" impression. One other thing I noticed is, just like the tallstider, dragonhawks have a very regal look and feel to them. Very proud and graceful. The only thing I dislike about the dragonhawk animations are the attacks. One of them is a rather sensible diving peck, the other one is a rather pathetic tail slap which looks just about as painful as a thrown pillow. Other than that though, very smooth moving pet.
This guy's colours are pretty fantastic. The body seems a little drab at first, but I found it to mesh quite well with the rest of him. The shading is really subtle, much more so than the other dragonhawk skins.

Utility: Dragonhawks are... not good for soloing. I was having a bit of a hard time not snagging aggro from Venant while in combat, even as a Beastmaster. His ability doesn't really benefit us much either, asside from one or two abilities I think. However, that same ability would be very useful for raids, PvP and groups with a fair few spellcasters in them. As a cunning pet, Venant is perhaps a little more suited to PvP than PvE, but you should still be able to deal damage with one, should you desire to run with one.

Diet: Dragonhawks live on a diet of meat, fish and fruit. Although vendors for these can be hard to find when questing, most beasts should drop some food for a hungry dragonhawk to eat, Or you can fish something up for their supper. So they're not too hard to keep happy.

Final Thoughts: I gotta admit Kormai, you have a way of rolling well for me. I've been thinking of picking up a Dragonhawk for Slum, but decided to wait until I could pick up one of the higher level colours, specifically the Zul'Aman Dragonhawk. But after running around with Venant, I think I just may keep him instead. :) He is gorgeous, especially as he flies. I'm not sure he'll be used as often as some of my other pets, but he's definitely got a space in my stables.
