OHMYGOD I love that white worm. I had the black one, which replaced my Grubthor (loved that fella to death)--I found myself not using worms as much, so figured I'd try out the black Jormungar. I really loved the skin in THEORY. I played with it a bit and it turns out it's more of a dark, dull green/blue than black, and with the nerf to worms, I just wasn't very attached to it.

Your pictures of the white one are tempting me very, very hard to try it out :D I can't say if I prefer one or the other with your troll--I guess you'll need to decide that one on your own. The old world ones have such a charming and confident, almost mischeivous expression on their faces--and yours is no exception. But that Jormungar is beautiful!!

WTB old-world faces on Jormungar bodies?

Also, apologies for re-rolling pets. It's hard to keep track, and when you posted the owl I sorta smacked my forehead. I guess the more of these you do, the more chance there is of overlapping pets--apologies for it and thanks for being such a good sport!

On to the rolls! (And no worries, no char is too low! I'd be fine with lowbies playing regardless, but with the Shattering, so many skins have been moved to or duplicated in low-level areas that it's really not too hard :) )

For Daranara!

Image

Reptiles!

ImageImageImageImageImage

Marsh Croc, Yellow-orange Raptor, Green Wind Serpent, Purple Snake and Green Turtle!

(Please not that if you want to tame a stable color Cata croc, feel free, but as they're all rares I was hesitant to assign one!)

For Buitre!

Image

Undead Pets!

ImageImageImageImage

Diseased Wolf, Diseased Gray Bear, Undead Hawk, and Undead Boar!

Enjoy! And as always, please shout if I missed anyone.

No worries! I expect a bit of overlap with as many of these as I've done and no real leveling out of Venjin yet. So long as you don't mind a little copy/pasting, I don't mind repeats. :P

And with the worms...it's SUCH tough decision. They're both adorable and they both have awesome personalities. I'm leaning more towards Donaghy because I've never had an old world worm and because I know that my baby white hunter will be grabbing the white worm as soon as she's high enough in level.

I'll be requesting another of these as soon as I get a baby hunter high enough to experiment with pet specials. :D

I lied, I'll take one more on Venjin. XD

Name: Venjin
Level: 80
Pet Slots: 8
No Restrictions
Notes: I've had the Bug theme, Blue theme, Undead theme, Northern Reaches theme, Demon theme, Bioluminescent theme, Safari theme, and White pets theme.

Acherontia, with the wave of Dwarf Shamans/Warlocks/etc. having all moved on from Loch Modan, Gosh-Haldir is rather easy to find. Even if Daranara gets unlucky and comes upon Gosh-Haldir as she's being killed, she can move on to taming the other pets she's been assigned, coming back every once in a while.
AKA Nazthandol, in <Petopians> (US)

Okay I really hope this isn't too much. Haha. I'm spending a lot of time in Deepholm waiting for Aeonaxx so writing this sort of gave me something to do :P It was fun, will be back when Tezz is a little higher in level.

---

Little Tezzra's challenge was themed around Safari pets - and boy was she excited. Tezz has spent a lot of time in Zangarmarsh recently, and she was rearing for a change of scenery. So off to the Northern Barrens she went to begin her Safari tour.

Her first target was the stunningly-spotted savvanah kitty, Dishu. Dishu seems to have a displacement issue and spends most of her time lolling around with lions, but hey, to each their own. After a reasonably uneventful trek - Tezz stopped for a moment when she saw a certain grey raptor fly past her head - Dishu came into sight. As soon as we landed, she rose from her sleeping position and gave Tezz a sassy little glare.

Image

The tame was easy, no hassles, though being a spirited huntress Dishu still put up a fight. The first thing Tezz noticed once the tame had finished, was that when her new kitty Prowled, she was completely lost in the savvanah environment. Spot the kitty:

Image

I have to say, as far as cats go, I rather like the spotted models (admittedly a little biased) but even so, a little close-up of the cheetah skin shows this colouration to be really beautiful. The yellow/gold coat is blended well and isn't too bright or unrealistic, and the startling white looks really nice and clean, particularly on the face and ears. The white also, imo, makes the teeth and claws look a little less old-school-graphics. There's a touch of pink on kitty's nose to give her some colour. But one of the most gorgeous things about her are her eyes. Gorgeous shades of red and yellow... and it suits this skin really perfectly.

Image

Image

The biggest problem I have with this cat model is how small the head is in comparison to the body. Realistic or not, it bugs me when I sit staring at it on an angle like the above for too long.

As ever, kitty animations are very smooth and well-considered. They're an ideallistic raid pet. You don't tend to get slack for having a cat with you. The idle yawn-slobber bothers me but as a) I love cats in general and b) my favourite pet of all time is a cat, I put up with it. Kitty doesn't have a name yet but I'm considering the ever-apt "Kitty" as a shortened form of "Katherine" (Tezz chooses human names for her pets).

So, with one tame under her belt, Tezz continues to the next. Snort the Heckler is nowhere to be seen so she heads over to Tanaris.

Image

Along the way, she spots some stranded turtles (really) and offers one of them a swimming lesson. The turtle is furious at this suggestion so Tezz continues on her way. Silly turtle.

Image

It isn't long before Tezz happens to spot a rather attractive serpent, however. She once has a serpent, it was a bright pink/red one from Tanaris, but it was just TOO bright, pink and shiny for her liking. This one, though, might be a sweet alternative. Just as she popped down to tame, Tezz and her new scaly friend spotted a rarespawn. Now wouldn't this make a gorgeous pet skin @_@

Image

Anyway, detour over. Finally Tezz makes her way to Tanaris and finds her next task: the orange and black two-headed vulture. Now, the whole reason Tezz was created by yours truly was to try out and (hopefully) appreciate pets I just can't handle on my main, and this birdie is certainly one of those.

Image

The first thing I noticed was like cats, birdy's animations were very nicely done. Smooth flight, smooth idle, and I really enjoyed their feeding/interaction animation:

Image

Birdy's colouration is really quite nice when you sit down to look at it. He's obviously a ripoff of the old vulture models, however he has extra bits of fluff here and there that hide some of the 2D faults. He also has a row of feathers on each tail which is a detail I really like, as it makes the tailfeathers seem less like ropey snakes.

Image

Another rather attractive detail is the tip of his beak: pretty black and white swirls fading into gold. In general the thing I really enjoy about this skin is that it's different and colourful without being absurd, unrealistic or over the top. After a little inspection, I also realised he actually looks really happy/cheerful... sort of like a scorpion or devilsaur; scary/unusual on the outside but just big playful puppies on the inside.

Image

Like all carrion birds, these guys have Demoralising Screech, an often-overlooked but undoubtedly useful ability, and certainly one that is plenty worthy for use in PVE. I find that these birds are much smaller/more streamlined than many other things with wings, so if "wings getting in the way" is an issue for you, perhaps a vulture is a pet to consider. They also fly at a nice height from the ground, but will playfully flap up and down or jab you at the shoulder for attention. It's good the one Tezz picked up is a softie or else it could probably eat her and be done with it:

Image
(Look at those cheeky grins.)

Phew! Tezz and currently-unnamed birdie continued on a short distance until they found the rather unusually-hued pink hyena. When Tezz first saw this girl, she was excited (look how high the head is!) but no, it's only like that when they move. Sadface!

Image

Dismissing birdy, Tezz cast tame beast... but wait! Ferocious little hyena had other ideas and interrupted it haha. It took me a moment to realise that Tezz had been knockbacked by a beast like 20 levels lower than her. But nevermind: if you want a pet with courage you need to be ready for a bit of fight. The second tame attempt was considerably more successful. Interestingly a name - Fiona - sprang to mind the second I saw this beast, so Fiona she has been dubbed.

Image

I'm sure many of us are aware of the problems with hyenas at the moment, so instead of the obvious, I'm going to focus on the colouration of this skin. I've looked at it on Petopia before and thought "gee it's pink" but never had a close-up inspection before. I have to say, it's quite pretty, and her fading pink-purple-blue coat reminds me of sunsets. Her claws/ears/teeth are all a dark blue, which I think makes the graphical issues a little less obvious. The spots on her back are a lovely dark pink/red , as is her mane. It's nice to see the colours all flowing into each other when so many hyena skins just look like brownish colours slapped on top of a standard base.

Once Fiona had been settled in her stable for the night, Tezz made the cross-continental journey to Stranglethorn in search for her final target, an elder crocolisk. She found one without too much trouble and the same was easy as pie.

Image

Crocolisk, crocolisk... what to say. Well, being an oldschool model, they're quite oriental-dragon-esque in their features, and in my opinion a little more grumpy than the new Cata crocolisks. As far as his sounds go, I quite like them (I'm fond of reptiles in general, their "hiss" is cute hehe). Good for someone who isn't keen on noisy pets. His animations are basic and he's like a giant lump who's quite happy to soak up some sun all day. I personally find crocolisk movements a little awkward, perhaps due to the extra legs or something. I've never really bonded to a crocolisk, and unfortunately this guy is no exception.

One thing I did find funny was his expression when he was being fed. "n___n"

Image

Of all these guys, birdy will definitely be staying, and I am certainly considering keeping Kitty. I'm releasing Fiona back into the wild in favour of my already-tamed red hyena, Mottle, and I didn't really form much of a bond with the crocolisk.

Sorry for the delay, and shout if I missed anyone!

Cialbi, I know she's pretty easy to get, but I hate assigning rares nonetheless!

Comett, love the pics, especially the angry turtle, and that shot of the bird's "feeding" animation is great--looks like you're playing catch! :D

Supposedly there's a way to trick it so that if you see other people doing the quest or something, you can lay down a trap and hope you pull one out of phase.

Hmm, would explain why I've never seen the quest. :) They're neutral, so there's generally speaking no need to kill them.

WARNING: In this review, I say some unkind things about turtles. If you're a turtle lover, I'm sorry in advance, but it's important you know the whole story, even the mean bits.

Daranara-the-younger checking in with part one of her big pet review, part one of two!

REPTILES! They're fun! They're exciting! They're ectothermic! Let's talk about them, shall we?

First up, let's talk about:

Image

The green Cataclysm crocolisk. Well, technically I was assigned the color-changer, but...

Image

Hey, she was up; who am I to complain? Meet Anya!

Image

She is varying shades of turquoise-green, with eyes that match my hideous pants. As you might guess from the picture, she and I never really hit it off.

She's a very low-to-the-ground pet, which I guess is okay. I'm more of a fan of pets I can see at a glance, and if some of the ground clutter is almost taller than her, well...

Image

Her model is solid, and much preferred over the old croco one. Her animations are all good, even with the wiggly run. She holds aggro well, as is expected for a tenacity pet. Overall, she's a solid thing, but we just didn't click. You can tell because I have almost nothing to say about her.

I let her go back with her croco friends, so maybe she'll have better luck next time. Sorry, girl!

Moving right along, we have...

Image

The yellow raptor!

Now, I am a recent convert to raptors, having finally trying them on my main and falling in love with Myra the Murderbeast (formerly Dart), so I was interested in seeing if her pale cousin could compare.

Looking them up, I saw this skin had a rare spawn associated with it as well: the Razormaw Matriarch. Excited, I headed out to her cave to try and find her.

Image

No luck. Since she was gone and her babies were now running the risk of being caught by poachers, I scooped them up and took them with me.

Now normally I'd wait out the rare spawn, but I knew if I just went one zone north there was a raptor to be had, so I went and soon enough my baby raptor had a Daddy:

Image

I named him Cyras, in remembrance of my very first raptor, when Dara-the-elder was about Dara-the-younger's level. He wasn't a yellow raptor, but let's not waste time on memories! Let's have a look at him!

Image

he's got kind of a pretty skin, even though it keeps making me think like he was just an orange raptor left out in the sun too long and faded. The blue is a good contrast to the orange-yellow, and the colors themselves shift nicely. The feathers provide good contrast for his limbs, though I think I'd prefer it if they were the blue of his stripes rather than teal. Ditto this for his beads.

His animations are neat, and give him a restless, energetic feel. his attack animations are like you'd expect a critter like him to fight. The jump-slash is a personal favorite :3

I will not be keeping Cyras, because he reminds me too much of a pale imitation of Myra the Murderbeast, but I will be finding a different skin for her raptor needs. They are good, intelligent-looking pets, and I'm glad I finally came around to them.

Next up!

Image

Meet Taran, the green turtle:

Image

You want to know a secret? I used to HATE turtles. No joke. They did not appeal to me at all. To me, they looked kind of stupid. The blank, vacant stare, the goofy expressions, everything about them just SCREAMED "herp a derp derp" to me, and who wanted that? I wouldn't even consider having one of them as a pet. Yes, I'd heard they were good tanks, but so what? I had Jerk, he could tank for me.

But enough about that, let's talk about Taran.

Now, Taran's from the same neighborhood as Anya was, because it was close. A quick hop in the water, and there he was. Woo boy, a turtle. But right away, even before I had a chance to name him, he was off attacking something. And what did we kill?

Image

The Modan Monster! I know it's not impressive to kill an elite several levels below you, but hey, a first kill is a first kill. Let's get out of the water to have a better look at him.

Image

I haven't changed my mind in that they look kind of derpy, but I'm not holding it against them anymore. It's kind of endearing, really. His animations are very... deliberate. He knows exactly what he wants to do, and how long he wants to do it in, and you can't hurry him or stop him.

The model itself has varied textures, but they mesh well together. I'm not sold on the... tusks, I guess they are, but that's alright. I like this coloring better than most of the turtles, so no complaints there.

Okay, so you want to know the exact moment I was sold on him, though?

Image

This, right here. We were running WC by ourselves to go get Marina (who I'll talk about later), and it was just after we'd killed Night-Elf-Boss-Who's-Name-I-Cannot-Recall. He came charging back to me, his shell shield still up, then he held his head up high, like he was proud of his accomplishment. And I smiled. He had won. Both the fight, and my heart.

He's a good little tank, as so many have said. He has a very solid presence beside me, which I enjoy. Overall, I am thrilled to have him here.

And now, because I ramble and fear this is getting long, I will split my review. My next post will have m remaining two pets, and an overview. See you there!

Okay, Daranara's review! Part two! Electric boogaloo?

*cough* Anyway! When we last left our intrepid heroine, she was in the middle of a reptile roundup! Let's see who's left!

Image

Green wind serpent! How neat!

I've had the red one, and the grey outlands one, so let's give green a try!

Image

Meet Joanna, shortly after tame. Wailing caverns is a terrible terrible place. Even the outside. And the light is terrible. Let's have a loot at her in better light, shall we?

Image

Much better! She's a pretty enough green color, with a yellow tummy and accents. I've always kind of enjoyed this model, and I feel they did a pretty good job melding the idea of scales and feathers on the same critter. The head feathers are kind of iffy, but so it goes.

Animations are still kind of hit or miss with me. Moving and swimming are pretty and I enjoy them, but the idle standing animations have always struck me as strange. I still don't understand the idle whipping of her lower body and tail around; It seems almost more likely to hurt her than it does to help keep aloft. But ah well.

She held aggro off me better than I expected, actually. Her special is a little meh for soloing things, I feel, but she's pretty enough I don't mind.

Will I be keeping her? For the moment, yes. I do want to have a wind serpent, but I'm thinking I may change her out for a different color should one strike my fancy. But until then, Joanna is a keeper!

Last but not least, we have:

Image

Purple cobrasnake! Hurray! Here she is!

Image

This is Marina, named to go with Joanna. She is quite the pretty snake! A bit of a pain to get to, because I get lost easily and am predisposed to hate Wailing Caverns (I died there once. At 80. By falling off of something. There were witnesses.). Bur I persevered on, and soon she was mine!

Image

She's very... pink. Much more so than I at first realized. But when she's not pink, the purples in her scales are vibrant and lovely, and the blue stripes help provide contrast. The fins along her back are quite neat.

Image

Along her jaw she also has a set of fins, which read to me as scaly facial hair and I am now regretting making her a girl, despite the colors.

Also just look at her expression. This is a freaking smart snake, and she knows she's smart, and she's plotting. I'm not sure we should be left alone together.

Her animations are shared with the worms, which I found adorable on them but a little sinister on Marina here. Probably the expression again. But it also means they get this!

Image

This is possibly the worst picture of it, but it's the unburrowing animation some worms get when they come above ground. It's kind of neat to watch a cobra do it, but a little strange, too. It's definitely the oddest part about the two sharing base models, but it's not a distraction, really.

Combat wise, she was like Cyras, but a little worse. She was alright, but nothing to write home about. Though the animations where she whips out her fangs to bite are vicious and kind of fantastic.

Will I be keeping her? No. I'm not a fan of the color scheme, and if I have a raptor, that's got me covered buff-wise.

CONCLUSION

Total:
Pets not keeping: 2
Pets getting new colors: 2
Pets keeping as-is: 1

This bunch was pretty good, overall. I learned a few things I like, I learned a few things, I didn't, and I learned to stop worrying and love the turtles.

I'd say this theme was a success! (though I am now excited to level enough to add a warp stalker to the crew).

I used to be like you Dara. I used to loathe turtles and refused to tame one for the longest time. I gave in when I found these forums and found out that they're not so bad.

I definitely misread that as "I used to like you, Dara." Like you were about to tell me you didn't anymore because I was mean to turtles or something :P

but yeah, they're really much nicer pets than I was expecting! The warning is a joking one, but I know that there are some people who have loved their turtles forever, and didn't want to surprise them with sudden pet-hating :P
