Random Pet Challenge [v3.0]

Kormai, I haven't played Champions Online, but my brother has. I've just seen pics / read some reviews. My bro had similar issues with the UI, but he said it was pretty fun. I hope you like it so far!

My roll this round was the Light Brown Eagle:


•Model: Golden Eagle
•Skin: Light Brown Bird of Prey
•Animations: Flapping while idle; Bonus Ability "Trick" (loop-de-loop / barrel roll!).
•Food requirements: Fish, meat.
•Tanking ability: Holds fairly good aggro against typical NPCs.
•Pet family abilities: Snatch (10 sec. disarm)
•Utility: Definitely PvP pet, with the Disarm ability. Love Birds of Prey for this very reason!

...off to Loch Modan I went!


The eagle I chose was regally perched upon a boulder, overlooking the southeastern meadows of Loch Modan. He calmly watched as I circled around him, with golden-hued eyes and an intelligent face:


He didn't care much for the whole taming process, and raked at me with his talons throughout the channel. But he did look impressive!


I ran around with him for a bit, to try and see if we connected or not. I took him for a dive; he has no special swim animation, and instead just flaps through the water like a champ:


I did try to connect with him, but for some reason we just weren't clicking. I took him to the mountains above Red Ridge for a final farewell before I released him back into the wild:


I chose to release him because I already have two Birds of Prey that I adore...Aotona (Tiki):

Arisia: hehehe petpet, that's so cute. And Nuramoc was very elusive for me but I finally got him/her the day 4.0.6 came out. If you camp, it should be fairly painless.

:: Hey, petpet *works* if you have my mindset ;D And you were right-- I logged in this AM, did ONE sweep, and there was Nuramoc-- and I nearly lost him twice; NPCscan said he was there, but for some reason, I could NOT spot him... so I targeted, landed, and hit tame beast and BOOM-- purkle and blue dragon! Now for a name...

Of course, I later flew into Sholozar, NPCscan caught Loque, and by the time I landed and flew back, I could not find him... ah well

ANYhow-- I then went and got me a tiger! For some reason I had thought it was the one that Shango turned into, but then noted it was one in Uldum, which I have yet to enter-- I play with my better half, and her computer died; we got it fixed this week, but it means reinstalling WoW, and so we've yet to get to Uldum.

having now been there, the geek in me that used to inhale Egyptian ancient history and mythology is in LOVE... and then I tamed mah new shiny laser-red eyed tiger!


Appearance: We've all seen orange tigers-- this one is shiny, and very attractive, with eyes that honestly look like they're glowing ruby... spooky, but yet cool. They're amazingly neat looking, and you're talking to someone who has had most of the cats in the game at one time or another. The tiger will race along at your side, loping with that easy muscular lope that looks so very cool and attacking, fighting and even swimming just plain work.

Food: Meat and fish, meaning you can level your fishing and feed your pet if you choose to not work the talent tree in with the ability for them to feed themselves.

Special attack: OK, I *hate* prowl-- I have used it, and can understand uses for it, but I like my pet walking next to me-- its an aesthetic thing. I really wish that if you clicked prowl OFF, it just turned off immediately, not when you attack something.

Anyhow, after the taming, tiger was renamed Akhenaten (beloved of the sun) and we went on a killing spree...

Take THAT cat centaur!


Let's go do some dailies, Ankh... but first, kill some blood thingies...

... and so we did! And we had a wonderful time, since cats make very effective killing machines, whether for solo killage, or in an instance (yes, MgT, where no mount or mini firebird dropped yet again... day 13... lol)... in short, if you want a nice partner in death dealing, try a kitty!

And then, the day ended... we returned to Orgrimar, for a snack and a nice dip in the river:


And thought the one thing I do not need is yet *another* cat... Ankh isn't leaving; he's part of the stable! Yay!

I didn't forget, I didn't forget! I was just super-duper busy with school. But now I can finally sit down and play my hunter without feeling guilty about procrastinating

Anyway, I had this little spider:

I didn't feel like getting ganked by running to the Draenei area, and the Hinterlands one seemed "too easy." So I decided to try my luck with the Darkmist Widow in Dustwallow.



I was surprised to find her there waiting for me.



I decided to name her Abigail. While I was in the area I remembered the little raptor hatchlings you can find in the nests. While I didn't find any nests, I did find this guy:



After killing him, we went off to quest.



I've never really used a cunning pet at a higher level. I'm not much of a fan of the family. However, I have used spiders on low level hunters (for PvP purposes). I have to say, I love the Web move they do. And being BM-spec, its CD was pretty low. I didn't think it was too useful in PvE, but that 5 seconds of having the monster immobilized was wonderful. Abbie had more than enough time to get threat back if I happened to steal it.



I wasn't much of a fan of this particular model. The fangs kind of freaked me out... I mean, the rest of the spider looks pretty elegant, but then suddenly RAWR GIANT FANGS.

Anyway. I like spiders. They have nice animations, and they're incredibly easy to feed (meat is plentiful, or if you're short on that, they'll eat a corpse instead). Their DPS is more or less on part with ferocity pets, too. While I don't think I'll be holding onto this particular pet, this has given me the motivation to go play with another spider pet (preferably one without gigantic fangs )

Ziarre: Wow, the purple is actually rather striking once you notice it! That's pretty cool Also, the eyes cannot be unseen.

Tyger: Some of those serpents have some really nice patterns on their backs and I think they picked really good colour schemes too. Kari has the blue one like that from inside Wailing Caverns.

Concussion: It is fun, but after playing wow for so long it takes a bit to get used to it...I can't complain too much since it is free after all! Also...none of my bird pets on any of my alts have done the trick so I don't know what it looks like. Sounds cool though.

Arisia: Grats on Nuramoc and on getting your wife's computer up and running again! As for prowl, left click the ability to have the cat (or spirit beast) leave prowl immediately .

enylia: Don't worry, real life comes first! As for spider models, you might try the newer bone spiders...they are pretty cool looking! (And I HATE spiders)

Yay got some game time from a very nice friend...but I'm still gonna finish the sig.

My beetle challenge!

I had to tame the purple beetle.

I was already in Tanaris, so finding and taming him was easy.


I could tell from the start that he was the rebellious sort.


He accompanied me through my Venomhide's quest, to get silithid eggs. As we were fighting off a few mobs, I noticed something odd...

His behind, it folds up. O.O How does a shell fold up like that?

We then went to Un'Goro, and later came back to Tanaris to test how lighting affects him.

Looks like he's a lot brighter at day, and the Un'goro lighting turns him a rather drab color. At day, in Tanaris, he was a very bright, vibrant red-purple with a pretty streak of pinkish purple on each side.

Model: I still can't think of Beetles as pets. However, the model is very nice, really. I like it a lot. It's well done, though slightly low on Poly count. The leg detail is quite nice, with spikes sticking out along the armored part.

Skin: A very pretty beetle skin. He's very bright in sunlight, with streaks of brighter color along his shell. Not too much to say about it besides that, though. He's quite dull in low lighting, but most pets are.

Animations: My only quarrel with this pet. When he attacks, sometimes his shell breaks. O.o His other attack animation is very nice, and really shows off how nimble and long his legs are. As for idle, he swings his head from side to side in a lively manner, and his feelers are always moving.

Sounds: A *very* quiet pet! His only sound is a very quiet hiss, I believe the same sound a crab has.

DPS: Low, of course. He's a pure tanking pet. Tenacity, with a shell-shield like ability. I specced him tank because of this, but he would probably do fairly good DPS with the right spec.

Tanking: Very, very good. He's one of the two "true" tanking pets. The fact that he's tenacity gives him Thunderstomp, too, which is necessary for tanking sometimes. His special skill is very nice here. He was tanking elites in Un'goro without any trouble, and didn't even need Mend Pet on him.

Special: Pure tank, and very nice for that. He's the kind of pet that you'd pull out to off-tank heroic dungeon mobs. However, it does no DPS, and doesn't buff the group. He's not a DPS pet in any way.

Overall: I may or may not keep him. I'm leaning away from it, simply because I can't click with beetles. Still, gave me a new respect for them!

Sadly not, Beryl Hounds appear to be 69-70, as do the Coldarra Mage Slayers. I sent Zi over to Borean to check, but forgot to actually nab one for the sake of reviewing before popping her back in Azshara. If it helps, it shouldn't be more than a few days before I've got Tufani that high at this rate. XD

I'm glad your manly cow enjoys these serpents.
I just couldn't get over how incredibly pink it looked next to Venjin.

@Kormai: I loooooooveee serpents.
The dark blues ones are gorgeous. I was excited to see become tamable because I longed for them in Wrath. And is a really gorgeous model as well.

And I'm thoroughly excited to see that someone got assigned the yellow outlands chimaera. I adore them so much!

If it isn't too much hassle, you could do a write-up on your old friend, as well as the reroll that Kormai gave you. I think it would be neat to see what you've noticed in a model over time, and what made you bond with him/her.

Well, I've been on the sidelines long enough. I'll do a double roll; Cialbi's pet will be temporary but there's more options available to him, while Shorelfon may actually keep his tame (My Petopians hunter is a bit too low of a level for me to ask for a roll right now).

I was rolled the Orange and Black Ravager. Luckily I have actually wanted to tame one to try out, so that was perfect.

Here he is in his natural habitat in Hellfire Penisula.



After I tamed him we, named him Ripper and went to Sholazar Basin for some questing, and here he is killing some Venture Co. workers.



He swam out for what I would consider a bug.



Now for the review.

The orange and black ravager actually looks real nice, the to colors compliment each other very well. I did not notice any idle noise, and the idle movement was basically him turning his head to look both ways. His attack noise is ok, not annoying but not cool in my book. His diet is of course meat and meat only, I don't think it would eat fruit with those teeth. As much as I like Ripper, I am not 100% sure I am gonna keep him. For now he can sit in my stable till I find something better or decide to just keep him.

And as always I would love for another one, this is getting to be quite fun and gives me something other then the daily norm.

Lol I tamed the 'extra spiky' purple n red ravagers that are at the entrance to Zangarmarsh and named her Imagination xD I usually have sound off tho so i dont notice the growls-- will check that out today :3

Anywho~ Sorry i havent posted about my Roc, I was given the Two-Headed Red Vulture and I went to tanaris and tamed Emberwing. The first thing I noticed is that he is HANDSOME! Im becoming less and less of a fan things that fly but Kenneth with that white ruffle around his heads reminded me of royalty <3

I did some quests and some dungeon runs and while partially camping spirit beasts, babysitting Deathmaw to keep killers away from him while waiting for a friend to come tame, just simply stared at him aweing at those awesome ruffles lol. My major problem would be the Demoralizing Screech.

Ive had a few greifers about it and my Avian Warhawk when she had the screech never bothered me was always a vocally abused pet by the majority of ppl i would group with I released Emberwing and on my new hunter, Paudette i noticed the Bonepicker Felfeeders were green and i kited one down and tamed him I wont be using Peppermint for groups, hes more kinda just eye candy and he doesnt carry the royal ruffle as well as a Red Vulture hes still a fav of mine.

So after getting a purple serpent challenge on Venjin and mentioning something about a girly, cutesy hunter, I decided that I'd have Fiona be one of my new Pet Challenge hunters, and would also collect cutesy looking pets.

Anyway, I finished up the goblin starting zone and then made my way out to Durotar where I nabbed the first raptor I came across. I already knew in my head she would be female and after staring at her for a minute, decided to name her Candy (I figure it's a cutesy sounding name).

At a glance, I really like the old world raptor models, but I get a little nit-picky with them when I start examining them too closely. One of my biggest pet peeves is the way the stripes on their shoulder look. Instead of being a smooth-ish line, they bulge out and look like a badly designed piece of jewelry on the raptor's shoulder.


The other thing that kind of creeps me out with them is their eyes. Now, predatory animals have forward facing eyes for better hunting, but when you look at the eyes of these guys from the front, they bulge out of their head and the pupils seem to be more sideways facing than forward facing.


Other than that, raptors don't bother me much and I think the colors on this gal are gorgeous. I love the teal stripes and eyes and I love her purple feathers.


For animations, I like raptors. They're lively by your side (but not annoyingly so). They look really cute when running, especially from behind, and their swim is reminiscent of a devilsaur's.


I decided to go quest in Azshara (after making a quick respec to SV to level with until 69). The nice thing with SV at this level is that I don't really have to rely on Candy to hold much aggro as Explosive Shot and her basic attacks will down a mob rather quickly. The only downside is that I did end up doing a lot of kiting and meleeing as Explosive Shot has a high focus cost and sometimes my set up was rather poor.

This was no fault of Candy's though and just something many low level hunters have to deal with until we get misdirect. For what she can do at this level, Candy's damage is rather good and I plan to keep her around. I kind of like the way she matches Fiona even though she's not necessarily 'cutesy.'

Well I got the wonderfull color-changing crab.

When I finally found one,




I tamed him.



The most interesting thing is the fact that it says it randomally chooses a color, but upon testing throughout the day, I noticed he choose green and orange the most.

I decided to name him Shifter, since he shifts colors. The model is ok, I do like the fact that it has spikes on it and it looks a little more like an attack crab then some of the other models. He is a finicky eater, only eating fruit, bread and cheese. He swims kinda funny, it almost seems he is struggling to swim at all. I again did not notice an idle noise with this guy and the idle animation is the usual look around. Now I did notice when you move and he moves, he clicks which I am assuming are his "feet" hitting the ground. Overall I like this guy, so he is gonna stay with me. It is nice to have a pet that if you are not feeling the color, you can dismiss and resummon, and boom, different color.

Well as always I would love another.

Hey, look at that. Way back when Cialbi was leveling through Dustwallow Marsh, he came upon this white crocolisk named Deadmire. Back then, my stables had a few white pets, and I had eventually decided upon a white pet theme (I later broke the pattern by taming a silithid and falling in love with the dancing buggy). So, I hurried up and leveled once or twice, until I could tame the albino croc. I remember that I renamed Deadmire to Albilisk upon taming, a combination of 'Albino' and the '-lisk' ending to the pet family.

That was then; a lot has changed since, and Albilisk was abandoned who knows when.

But, this is now, and it appears that the time has come for a little reunion. After a quick check, I learned that Deadmire had survived The Shattering. So, it was off to the marshlands for Cialbi.


Now, to get reacquainted...


We headed back into 'town', if you can call a place named Mudsprocket a town, to take some shots of this crocolisk skin.


As with all the old crocolisk models, there are the 'chinese dragon whiskers' along the lower jaw. Also note the red eyes; this crocolisk is one mean-looking albino.


I've said it before when I was last assigned a crocolisk, but I'll say it again; crocolisks were not built very well when it comes to running. That said, this time around it bothered me less. *shrug*


Now, for some talents (first BM, then SV). I picked somewhat impulsively, with a goal of giving Albilisk a spec that none of my other pets have. Towards that end, I succeeded.


My opinion of Ankle Crack is that the ability is good for PvP, which I don't do anymore, or for helping your pet regain aggro sans Taunt. I decided to do some questing with Albilisk when in my SV spec and not bothering with Misdirection. Interestingly enough, things went much smoother when Ankle Crack was off CD, but that could have been due to other abilities like Growl, Thunderstomp, and Charge also having enough time to come off CD themselves. My conclusion was that while Ankle Crack is great for low-level hunters who are lacking in pet tanking abilities (this coming from personal experience, as you can see in a previous pet challenge I did), it becomes less and less useful for pet tanking as you get access to more and more Tenacity talents.

I did say that this pet would be a temporary one. While Albilisk doesn't really have a permanent spot in my stables, I won't be abandoning her yet. I'm enjoying our little reunion at the moment, and I have yet to come across a beast that will fill her spot. No need to fret over this yet, I guess.

Is it me, or did someone get into Cialbi's ale supply?

I will post Shorelfon's adventure in a bit, although it may have to wait until tomorrow due to the late hour that I am posting this.

Tyger: Yay someone else noticed the eye positioning in predator vs prey...in all honesty I would expect them to notice things like this; come on Ghostcrawler you don't have a PhD in marine bio for nothing!

Peshooter: I'm really lazy and I just use the Glyph and "feed" my pet with mend pet...I'm a horrible hunter like that. My pets never get fed.
