Ever just wanted to tame something on a whim?

Unread post by Pawtrack »

...like, really feeling like you should randomly tame some creature?

Well, I had that feeling with the Sewer Beast.

And... after 4 days of looking on-and-off whenever I was in SW...

Found him, his little red dot obscured by one of the yellow canal crab's dots on my minimap. If I hadn't been mousing over every dot I saw I would have missed him!
Image
I like him a lot so far... we'll see if he's as good a tank or better then my little scorpid :D

I'm doing this right as we speak. I was bored with my horde toons so I logged onto my long forgotten nelf hunter and went rare hunting for no reason. As I was flying over Northern STV to look for the rare spawn gorilla, I decided to check for Pogeyan and he was there. After running around for a little while with the cat, I decided to tame him on my tauren hunter and am now camping him. I've seen him dead once and got to the spawn location 1 second after a low lvl nelf tamed him.

Congratulations!!! 's Sewer Beast.

I've made a few whim tames. Shango was a whim tame as was The Rake and a couple others. These whim tames usually end up being my favorites.

Tames on a whim? Sure! Let's talk about my most recent one!

It started out when I was browsing that "beloved common models" thread the other night. I like seeing what other people enjoy in their pets. So I'm scrolling, and someone posts this pet:

Image

Baby belf kitten. I've seen it around when I play horde side, I've even had it on a few horde hunters. I dunno what it was, but I decided I -HAD- to have one for Dara (we'll ignore that I was having issues rationalizing having three cats, but four? That's a-okay!). The skin had never really done much for me before, but by golly I wanted it.

So I took off towards Eversong Woods. Getting there wasn't much of an adventure, since there's so much and I can just ride around most of the guards with no trouble. When I arrive, I find a springpaw lynx. I watch him pad around, but I am stopped from taming it. This was the skin I wanted, but if I was going to get it, I wanted it from one specific mob.

Image

The Springpaw Cub, to be precise. Yes, the piddly little level one versions that wander around a handful of steps from where the babiest of baby blood elves start.

Image

I am amused at the size difference between the wild cubs and my newly-tamed one. About this time I noticed I was gathering attention from the locals (who I'm sure weren't expecting to see a big scary night elf stealing their baby kittens straight out the gate!) so we fled.

Image

She has since been named Jia and is a delight every time I summon her. I'm enjoying her quite a bit, and I'm glad I gave in on this whim :3

Oh, this has happened to me a number of times. ;) The ones who REALLY clicked, though, were Gosh-Haldir (who was the Large Loch Crocolisk at the time) and green Madexx.

We will not go into my impulsive IHAVETOTAMESHANGONOW story...xD

I have been running around Kalimdor after Madexx has been tamed or killed (camp downtime) and have just been taming all of the lower level rares I encounter and then abandoning them (some I have actually kept).

Considering the spawn timer on them is like 5min to 4hrs or so I don't feel that guilty about doing it.

Main reason I am doing it is in case some of them go MIA in the future or get a major makeover and I want them. I am not actively seeking any rare other than a certain color of Madexx at the moment, so I am not after anything in particular.

The last one I tamed and decided to keep was the Silithid Harvester about 4 days ago. He is a pretty beetle, and I like his colors.

My ghostcrawler Poseidon was a "might as well" tame. I normally give him away to other hunters in the area or from my guild but last night I finally caved in and tamed him for myself.
My other is my netherstorm Ripfang Lynx named Aldimir. I was going to stormspire to get a pet from the vendor there for one of my new alts when I flew over the group of lynx in the other dome. Couldn't resist the pull to tame one and so I did. :)

I tamed Pogeyan on a whim. Not sure how I feel about him--he's kinda ugly, but I like him for whatever reason. I named him just Pogeyan (though I may rename him ChexMix, don't know why either) and I'm going to drag him around with me for a while.

Hmm, there are definitely a few I have hidden away somewhere that were "on a whim" tames! Sometimes they can be the best companions because you don't expect anything from the tame to stick, and when it does it's just delightful to have a "no expectations" relationship (haha!). No but really, I'm sure plenty of people out there have camped or awaited a rare/hard tame for ages and then been let down when the pet doesn't click. I have never seen Sewer Beast alive, myself, but like Dara I tamed one of the tiny baby Springpaw kitties (Who is now named Phoenix; I believe I "rescued" her from being slaughtered by Blood Elves in training LOL).

On my main, the main two whim tames that come to mind (that really clicked) are:
Image Image
Krush - like many people - I saw when I was hunting for Loque, and decided I might as well tame him as he's here. I think he killed me first go actually, so I had to run back, but when I finally did tame him I spent a bit of time with him on my Loque hunt and he was such a delightful pet I still love to use him today. He's now named Rory and I still have great fun watching him stomp around dungeons with me.
My Silithid, Snuffles, was a 100% random tame FOR TEH LULZ because I thought the Silithid bugs were the ugliest damn things in all of existence and I wanted to tame one (as one might do for a sporebat, back when they were useless). Well lol. Boy was I wrong. I now consider Silithids to be one of the most adorable pet families ingame, and whenever I call out Snuffles I always end up with a big grin on my face as he's so fun to be around.

My alt, Tezz, has picked up a few impulse tames, primarily:
Image Image Image
I think a few people know my Chimera story, I went off to tame the Evalchaar and came back with both him and my beautiful Scarlett. I'm head over heels for that pet lol, don't even know why that much, we just clicked and she's now Tezz's "main pet".
The serpent was when I was on my way to a random pet challenge for the orange 2 headed vulture (who I also kept), I saw a pretty snake and tamed it on a whim. He doesn't have a name yet but I'm very much enjoying having him around and would like to keep him.
My warp stalker, Julian, I tamed whilst questing. I didn't even know he was there to be honest! I rocked up to the portal areas in that cave and saw three warp stalkers grinning at me, so I killed two, dismissed my pet and tamed Julian. He's been wonderful, though taken a slight back seat in favour of Scarlett for the moment, he's definitely a keeper.

I am a planner. Every single one of my hunters has a stable planned long before I even take my first tentative steps as a new hunter. That said, a few tames have not worked out that way!

First, there is Mozag's Pogeyan, Killer. I had admired the cat ever since I saw the PTR screenies, but I had a set theme for Mozag, and I did not intend to deviate from it. Pogeyan was going to my baby Orc, and that was the end of it. However, a great unhappiness for her current red lynx skin had been growing in Killer's heart. I was not happy with the way she looked next to Mozag, and I sensed that she wasn't pleased either. I tried doing some instances and Love Fool runs on her, but it just wasn't working. However, I did something I've not done before, and relegated her to the stables in the hopes that I would fall back in love with the skin. I usually ditch any pets as soon as they're not working, but I liked Killer's personality. So, she languished in the stables for a bit, while I ran around with different pets.

When the patch hit, I had to go to STV for the Love Fool achievement, and, being a hunter, I did a quick tour of the spawn points of the new rares. I didn't see the croc, I waved at the gorilla, and then...THERE. Oh my god. Pogeyan. In that split second Killer was reborn.

Thw other two happened for Lomelinda.

Heather and Daffodil.

Lomelinda's stable theme is a loose "white, greyish or blue pets only", and she's gone through a lot of, in particular, cat tames before settling on the ones that stayed. Both the animals above I'd tamed on her before, but quickly got rid of since they didn't feel right. Besides, I already had loads of cats at that point, as well as my beloved white worg, Sweet Pea, Lome's great love. I let the two go, and didn't look back.

A few weeks back, I woke up in the morning and just KNEW I had to have that tan coyote back. Like, right NOW. So off I flew to Westfall and retamed the first one I came across. It didn't need to be a special tame, and it wasn't. Daffodil was home.

Also, a few weeks ago, I was in the process of culling out Lome's stables, particularly trying to sort out her issues with the many cats and bird of prey she had. After many agonising hours, I freed many that were no longer suitable, with the promise of taming them again on other hunters. The most difficult moment was giving up Tulip, my beautiful spotted saber cat who had been with me since I hit 10. Somewhere along the line though, despite the great love I have for the skin, we'd grown apart. It may have had to do with the fact that I was usually only using Lily, her lavender saber tiger, and also that Wulfhild, my Dwarf hunter would look amazing next to a cat of Tulip's skin.

So, with heavy heart I waved goodbye to my old friend, and released Tulip back to Teldrassil, where she can be found by Wulfhild soon. This left me with only one cat, and that's not a situation I'm entirely comfortable with either, despite removing them, since six was perhaps just a tad too many. But I couldn't decide on a skin. Everything just felt a bit blaah, but I knew there was one more out there waiting for me (until the white saber model comes along, that is!), and again, one morning I woke up with the certainty, that I had to bring Heather home.

Lomelinda hightailed it to Dun Morogh, where she'd tamed her first one at level 10. Right there, in that same little place, near the Gnome starting area, Heather paced around. Within moments, Lomelinda was hugging her old friend, vowing to never let her go again.

They may not have been "whim" tames as much as some here, but I am an obsessive list-maker and pet-planner, and these are pretty "on a whim" ones for someone like me. :D

Sorry for the length!

Sochi has a few free spaces, which comes as a surprise for me. She tamed Terrorpene the other night and we were estactic. But that firey turtle was a planned tame.

Old Cliff Jumper was not. He was a whim. Got him last night (Thursday night here) around 10:50pm (9:50 server). I just decided that I had never seen him in the wild. Had only ever seen him tamed. And dang, doesn't he just have the nicest green eyes? So I put his ID into NPCscan, fly out to the Hinterlands, and start seeking. Nothing the first night. I parked Sochi on the roof of Featherbeard's Hovel and went to bed. The grass there is cushy.

Next day, logged in to check. Nada. Hopped over to Matalina, did a quest or five and got this urge to check on OCJ. Switched off to Sochi and NPCscan lights up my screen. Sweet! Hopped down and tamed Mr. Wolf. He was chewing on a hay bale. Poor guy, a little confused in the diet department, but ow he's got a taste for roast. But...yeah, those eyes are nice in that dark coat. He'll stay. Needed more wolves to balance Sochi's minor feline obsession anyway. Now I just need a name....

But that's another topic.

Most of my tames are impulse tames. :D Peaches, Vince, Scuppers - most of my "main" pets were ones I picked up for giggles who stuck with me.

Umbergore, in particular, was a whim-tame. One quest mob out of many that I felt bad killing, so I just tamed him instead. I didn't plan on keeping him, but all of my pets had names that didn't really fit on a roleplay server. So after some brainstorming, the eyeroll-inducing title of 'Umbergore' was slapped on the poor sod. I didn't meet Umberhowl until later on, and my friend and I had some laughs about his Shadowmoon cousin. :P He sticks out like a sore thumb among Veeka's more...childishly named pets, but I love him all the same.

The only pet I've actually gone out and looked for with the intention of taming was Karoma. I usually surf Petopia when I'm bored, pick something I like, and go see if it looks half as nice by my side. I did the Amani Dragonhawk run, tamed Duskfang, and met quite a few pets who I still use today thanks to these 'taming runs'. :)

I love planning my stables, and then I love changing my mind :)

Recently, I keep taming different spiders on a whim. I keep changing them out, not because I'm unhappy with my current one, but because they are all so pretty!
