This is amazing. I was going to name my gull "Coleridge" because of the albatross in Rime of the Ancient Mariner... But I thought it would be too obscure for a lot of people. Instead I went with "Hemingway" for The Old Man and the Sea. But your owl makes me happy.

At one time I had a crab named Elliot. This is a nice theme, I'll have to make a hunter like this sometime: a Dire Raven named Poe, a Stranglethorn Tiger named Blake...

My blood elf Khaotic gives her pets names in the Drow language via a translator I found (image on the front page would likely be NSFW >.>). So she has-

Image
-Gulhalrathn (means "ghostsaber")
Image
-Alti'ui'qo ("wing clip")
Image
-Maelthra ("dragon")
Image soon to be changed to Image
-Vress'lve ("claw")
Image
-Kaldaka ("wolf")
Image
-Feher ("puppy")
Image
-Athiyk ("spirit")
Image
-Jiala ("laugh")
Image
-and RexAshil, because I liked his name too much to change it. >.>

My Nelf Wildlark names her pets whatever happens to pop into my head. Most of her pets have short, simple names, like Tuah, Kao, or Trev. Quiloe her black wolf is one of my favorites.

My most beloved pet is named Kyra after my long lost puppy. I've never replaced my dog and I will always have a stable spot in WoW for Kyra.

On my main, all of the girl pets are named after different goddess of war (with the exception of Effy the pink shale spider):
Anath (warp stalker)
Skatha (Gondria)
Luna (Karoma)
Athena (red raptor)

while the boys have fun names. My favorites (besides the four devilsaurs in my signature) are:
Grissom (Terrorpene)
TheFitz (red Madexx)
TweetyBird (spiteflayer)
Gryffindor (Sambas)
Moose (Ghostcrawler)
Sodo (Skoll--he's also Luna's boyfriend lol)
RandallFloyd (Mazzaranche)
Baconator (armored boar)
George (blue beetle)

On my alt, all of her pets (with a few small exceptions) are named after different characters from some of my favorite literary works:
GregorSamsa (Grunter)
WalterMitty (Tsul'Kalu)
Buck (Ravage)
Charlotte (Mother Fang)
Lenore (Zaricotl)
Fawkes (Emberwing)
Doris (Ashtail)
SalParadise (Deathmaw)
Renfield (black wind serpent)
Moloch (Echeyakee)

My favorite exception to this rule is NotoriousDOG her starting mastiff. :P

I also never realized until I wrote this out how many of my pets I consider to be boys. Whoops!

A name I thought I'd mention is my favorite o3o:

I have a red maddexx, named Röslein meaning little rose; more to the point the name is taken from the poem Heidenröslein, little rose on the heath: Furthermore it refers to this line of the poem:
Said the boy: I will pick
you, my red rose on the heath!
Said the rose: I will prick
you and I won't stand it,
and you won’t forget me.
Poems actually about a girl, but still I thought it was a decent name for my maddexx based on those lines.

I named my Sambas, Shadow after the cat I lost in April to cancer. I thought it'd be a fitting tribute because he's the King of beasts..

My Core Hound is named Orthrus, who was Cerebrus' two headed brother.. and finally my decrypt bird is named Aerokordax, which means 'Fabulous bird' in Greek. :)

My goblin hunter Matalina has a tool theme going. But I expanded it to include some rocks too, as she's a miner and buidling implements.

She has Anvil, a mastiff.
A tallstrider, called Scaffold. He brown and non-descript. Neither rare nor brightly colored. I love this bird.
A guildie found Scalebeard and Matti had to go see. Poor turtle, the naga were causing him trouble. So he was tamed. He's sporting the name Lugnut now and he's Matti's tank of choice.

Shaon has a mini-theme going, based on four little animals carved of stone. My husband put these into my stocking on our first Christmas as husband and wife. They are a rhino, a cat, a dragon and a bear. I tamed one animal for each one; Hematite the rhino, Ramas the black leopard, Jasper the white warpstalker (Shaon's favorite) and Subek the bear-who was the first retame once the stables were rebuilt.

Names are important for me. I try for ones that suit the creature who will bear it. I prefer serious over silly, but I don't mind something mildly silly-like Lugnut-when it fits.

I have quite a few, so this might get big...

Image
Kyra. She's the first pet that actually "stuck" with me more than just a couple levels. She's stubborn and a bit grouchy, but never leaves my side (no, really, she's always my Slot 1 active pet) and is basically the pack matriarch.

Image
Tonka. Lazy, bit of a slob, has a habit of trying to sneak snacks from guildmates' packs. Basically a cross between a fratboy and a throwrug.

Image
Blacklight. So named after the curious fact that most IRL scorpions glow his color under UV exposure. Skittish and a bit cowardly, with a habit of waving his claws to seem bigger - done more for his own selfconfidence than for enemy intimidation, it seems...

Image
Maleficent. Haughty, spoiled, basically a big scaly elven dramaqueen. But she's inexperienced, so never can "overthrow" Kyra in being the "pack leader".

Image
Winston. Another rescue, this time from the undead-obsessed cultists of the Scarlet Monastery. The perfect example of noble breeding - strong, loyal, steadfast. Also allergic to undead; they give him sneezing fits. Maybe thats why the Scarlets let him go so easily.

Image
Ormagoden. Act-of-mercy here - a team were sent in to destroy him, but I saw a soul in need where they saw a vicious monster. He's basically a broken-bird case - gonna take a lot of work to bring him out of his shell after so much torture.

I have a few others, but haven't really gotten a "persona" for them yet.

Wykea, I love the personalities you gave to your pets (or that they developed for you I should say). :D
By the way, Maleficent is an excellent name--my Chromaggus is sporting it.

A Chromaggus is where I first saw the name. But consdering who the original bearer was, a large black lizard seemed more appropriate.

Weirdly, I've hardly seen any other Chromag's on my server, though I regularly get folks asking where I got him. And not one person has gotten the reason behind the name yet.

I was actually curious about your Chromaggus' name myself. What's it mean? :)
You're right about a black devilsaur being a good bearer for the name Maleficent. If you don't mind, I think my Disney character will use it for her devilsaur when she's high enough to get one.

Brutal Legend. Take a look, and you'll agree with me - Chromaggus and Ormagoden look a hell of a lot alike.

I usually name my pets in Elvish (Lord of the Rings, more specifically the original version, Quenya and Dungeon and Dragons done by The Grey Company versions). The elvish names like Fallaner for my spirit beast Arcturis means 'healer' due to his Spirit Mend spell. Loque is named Aliosacath which means 'snow leapord'. I catch a black fox and a white fox and name them Ronyo (black version) and Rusco (white version) since thats my bf's and i's nicknames ^^ Ronyo is the D&D elvish for 'fox' and Rusco is Quenya for 'fox'.

Pets that i name otherwise usually are named in an instant of a name popping into my head or it takes lots of thought and not always do i even like the name i end up naming the pet since sometimes its not a burst of inspiration. Other pets get named after songs xD when 4.1 comes out im gonna be sporting a gorgeous RidingSaberSkin: White named Paperflowers after the sing Imaginary by Evanescence :)

Right now... I dont exactly have a beautiful roleplay for beast and master unfortunately but my troll is beginning to eye one of those pretty White Saber Worgs....

I don't have a whole lot of pets yet, moved server a few months before Cata and I've not had a whole lot of free time to level up my hunter alt again.

Currently I have these who I got very quickly as replacement for some of my original tames back in vanilla.
Yang (Echeyakee)
Yin (Humar)
Iorek (Bjarn) My first tame after doing the old fashioned run from Teldrassil through the wilderness.
Maturin (Originally Ironback but I like the Ancient Turtle skin and it suits the name better, so replaced with Ghamoo-ra this time)

Not thought of names for anything else yet, I tend to tame the skins I like and not name them until something comes to mind and sticks. I've released a few tames just because I couldn't find a name that suited them... even if I do end up getting them back a few weeks later when something comes to mind.

I have a bunch of pets that have Latin names.

Olm the Wise: Sapientia (wisdom)
Sambas: Aureus Rex (The Golden King)
Loque'Nahak: Albus Lux (The White Light)

And then there's my fake Madexx, who I named Nemadexx (Not Madexx).

M black Jormundgar is named Yog'Shoggoth and my Kurken is named Aphoom Zhah after Lovecraft deities, and my Pogeyan is named Ulthar after the city in the Lovecraft short story, "The Cats of Ulthar" (after the cats of the city kill a family who has been trapping and killing cats there becomes a law that it is illegal to harm a cat).

Other than that I usually name a pet after a certain attribute they have, like my Oil Covered Worg is named Pitch (for obvious reasons), and Ashtail is named feisty because she(?) was moving all over the place when I was taming her. And finally, for certain pets like Chromaggus, I don't feel like I can remove the title from such a powerful and respected beast.

My first pets were following the undead/paranormal theme:

White tiger saber cat- Sinister
Snow leopard saber cat- Phantom
Ghost saber- Spectre
Black fox- Cryptic
King Krush- Belial
Yellow worm- Fester
Purple chimera- Leviathan
Green chimera- Absynthe (wouldn't let me use real spelling)
Undead boar- Frankenswine

I love the original lion looks and named each after the archangels:

Black lion- Michael
White lion- Gabriel
Regular lion- Raphael

All but one of my spirit beasts is a Native American name:

Loque- Kanati, Cherokee for The Lucky Hunter..I felt so lucky getting him after looking for 2 years
Skoll- Hino is an Iroquois thunder god
Karoma- Aningan is Inuit for the moon
Arcturis- Wachabe is Sioux for The Black Bear. A guardian spirit.
Gondria- Anguta is Inuit for gatherer of the dead.

My last spirit beast, Ghostcrawler- Hotfix...it fits

The following are just some silly names that popped into my head when I tamed them:

White corehound- Brinks
Green raptor- Spielberg
Terrorpene- Tamale
Red hyena- Doodles
Arctic wolf- Mayhem

And the last one took the longest to figure out since he is such a special cat I felt he needed a special name:
Pogeyan- Aker.. The Egyptians believed that the sun traveled through a tunnel from sunrise to sunset, and each end of the tunnel (entrance and exit to the underworld) was guarded by a lion.

Sorry for the length of the post but I love my pets and felt they should all be mentioned :P
