Help D:, ideas, something anything :(

Unread post by Siliverin »

Ok so we own some property in a town over, inthe middle of the desert. Now there are always strays in the area because people drop them off all the time and the city's animal control.... is lacking to say the least. Well normally yeah i feel bad and i know there is not much i can do about it :( but there has been this one.. She has been coming around every time we are at out property. She is very sweet and pretty, she has no home and we can tell she has had a liter of pups at some point in time :( for some reason something about her makes me die inside everytime we leave and she is left all alone in the desert hopeing someone will feed her. the bad: we have 3 dogs and that is the limit for the city i live in unless we get a kennel license and i dont know anyone who would want a dog :( she is still young as well. I have some pics on my phone of her, she looks part german shep for sure and maybe husky she has bright blue eyes. I dont know what to do it kills me and my son calls her Summer everytime she comes over. if i call the animal controll they will take FOREVER to get out there and then if they ever do which alot of the times they dont unless its a mean dog, they will send her to the pound and will most likely be put down :(

here is a pic from my phone of her

I don't think you can link photos straight from gmail like that I think you have to save them and then upload them to another site then link them here, or just upload them here.

It might be a stretch but if you have any Vet Tech schools around, you could ask the teacher of that if one of the students will find her a home, there's a girl I know who adopts dogs from the pound and puts up posters and everything and tries to find each dog a home so it doesn't get put down. Also my school had some program where the people in the class would be given a dog to adopt out and make sure it was ready for a home. No harm in looking there, just an idea.

I wish I lived even remotely near you, Sili, I'd take that beauty home with me any day. :(

Good luck finding her a home, I don't know how things work in the US, so I have absolutely nothing but sympathy to give.

That's too bad, really. I wonder if you can find an animal shelter in the area that would be willing to come out and fetch this dog, if you distract the dog for long enough. I don't think that trying to load this dog into a car and drive her to an animal shelter would be a good idea, but maybe you can find a group that does have trained dog handlers.

You said it was in a desert, this wouldn't happen to be anywhere near New River or Avondale AZ would it? I've been hearing of lots of strays being dropped near there, let me know if I'm in the wrong state.

I would start asking or looking for rescue groups to try and go with you to come and get her. Better then leaving her in a shelter.
Or yes take her yourself. She could probably be easily lured into a car with some dog food or treats. Then take her to a no kill shelter.
Hope she gets out of there.

ah, na this is in california, but its pretty much the same here they do it in Phelan ( all desert) or around where i live, becuase of all the homes they figure someone will take them home :( but it dont work that way. yeah the animal control around these parts honestly suck i called on a pup and i mean like 6 months old... they never came, they dont care unless 1) its a threat or 2) you own to many dogs and they coem to tell you do something bout it.

that i know of, all the shelters out here put the dogs down after so long D: and i been trying to get ahold of some rescues only one replied saying they feel bad but they are packed as it is

Take her in, and call animal control to have them come get her; if animal control never shows up and anyone hassles you about having more than 3 dogs, well it's on record that you reported the stray right off, and you can truthfully say you are just holding her in the meantime until animal control can make it out to you - not your fault if they never showed up.

Right? :)

You say animal control, but what about the humane society? In our area. they seem to try and get homes for strays instead of just putting them down. The rescue groups are another you can try, but they usually are full and can't take more. I've alway had luck with the humane society, and I've gotten my pets from them. I know every area is different, but at least check on it.

Or, once you've at least got things cleared up with your horse boarder going forward, tell her if she adopts this dog you will write off the back charges on your 5th wheel that you incurred because of her... ;)

Its too bad I dont live in Cali anymore...I'd take her, she is beautiful.
And Cali does suck when it comes to handleing stray or dummped animals. :( I hope you can either find some place to take her or figure out what to do with her.

And you are good to want the best for this dog - my suggestion was intended as a last-ditch alternative to her spending the rest of her days as a stray, if nothing else opens up.

I volunteered at a cat shelter a few years ago, and I remember how it changed my outlook. I'd always loved animals hence why I was there in the first place, but it struck me that the people there sometimes applied such stringent standards for adoption that most of the cats that did get adopted were just sent to live with the volunteers, so you had this small circle of people with a dozen+ cats and a huge bottleneck at the shelter.

I started out feeling the same as them, but even I had to adjust my expectations after I'd been around that for the first few months - just because I personally treat my cats like my kids (we sometimes joke they are all kids just some have 4 feet) I have to recognize that lots of people have a different approach to pet ownership that may be alot more casual even to the point of letting them run around outside a lot and not spending much on vet bills - but those animals are still better off than the ones with no home at all.

In my view any person who is willing to be a pet owner, is at least moderately loving and is not outright abusive, is better than letting an animal live as a stray.

Just my 0.2

Not to threadjack but you are SO RIGHT, Worba. The shelter I used to volunteer at was quite good about adopting out, but the local cat rescue group where I currently live is ridiculous. Home visits required before placement, for example. Gah.
