The New Conan the Barbarian

Unread post by Arwyn »

Oopsie..deleted the photo by accident. But just go to the link to see Mr. Momoa if you missed it.

Jason Momoa who has taken the helm as the new Conan the Barbarian that is slated to come out in August. Before taking on a role that I will forever associate with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mr. Momoa appeared in Stargate Atlantis and Baywatch. Here be the article wihich has a little more info on Mr. Momoa along with a trailer for the Conan movie: http://blog.movies.yahoo.com/blog/885-m ... -new-conan

Of course you know there's going to be comparisons between this and the old one so hopefully the remake does the original proud. Hopefully.

I still think they should have gotten' Schwarzenegger to do the new one. :D

I'm pretty sure with the magic of CG they could shave off a few..a few..I'm pretty sure with the magic of CG they could successfully transplant Arnold's head to a body double with no problems.

They'd still probably have to do a whole lot more than that.. *cough* But with the new CG I'm sure they could come up with SOMETHING that'd work, but, for Arnold alone, would it really be worth the effort and money in the end. o.O

I'm not pleased about this at all. The original movie did not need to be remade. Dino DeLaurentiis made a classic film that even to this day is one of my favourite films of all time. (I know he didn't create Conan and he wasn't the only one who directed but I don't know the names of the others offhand.) I'm willing to give this movie a chance, but I expect to be disappointed.

He's my favourite actor, and I can safely say that he plays the aggressive/brute type of roles really well. (Being an avid stargate/ronon dex fan.) I've been interested in seeing how well he does in this movie for about a year.

The only reason I really want to check this movie out is because he's playing a significant role in it.

Ive been a fan of Robert E. Howard(creator of conan) Sense maybe first grade. Been following this movie very closely. I loved the old Arnie versions, even though they strayed pretty far from the original canon. But couldn't help loving Dino De Laurentiis's,.. Frazetta homage's. and of course maybe the most under appreciated movie scores of all time(Basil Poledouris)

Being Conan means you are one of the strongest dudes in all of Sword and Sorcery, I do agree that he seems barbaric,.. but at most he is a sidekick to Howards Conan. can you imagine how ridiculous Jason Momoa Imagewould look if he stood toe to toe with this guy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2F7p3Y-5b0

<---that is a barbarian. that is one of the strongest most athletic guys in the world. and Howards world was MUCH tougher than ours. There is no middle ground with conan! his character is not a matter of interpretation! I had to sit through Bryan Singer turning Superman into a creepy Effeminate stalker/dead beat dad. And who found it easy to watch Adrian Brody fight Predators?. Jason Momoa would look silly trying to best Frost Giants, Conan is not just a tough guy from up north(Not from Polynesia). He is the Apex of human barbaric power..BUT because they want women to buy tickets. they mock my favorite fictional characters....End of opinionated rant

To me at least the whole "gleaming oiled bodybuilder as barbarian warrior" just seems kinda meh - I mean it's one thing if they wanted to do a Hercules movie, or maybe a gladiator movie; the Greeks and Romans were after all fairly gung ho about the whole muscle beach thing... but for a barbarian I'd rather see someone who looks, well... barbaric. E.g. extremely tall and wide, with a greasy beard and draped in ragged stinking furs, swinging something that looks more like it was made for building demolition than for use on soft living tissue...

What's in yuir wallet??

Well if you go by roman standards anyone could be a barbarian. I mean they called the men of europe barbarians. They used some pretty advanced weps

Anyone other than a Roman, that is (or a Greek - the Romans borrowed most of their "civilized ways" from the Greeks, after all) - which rules out the "gleaming muscle man" image, since everyone else was too busy trying to stay warm to go around dressed like that... ;)

Well Conan has always been the "oiled muscle man" so makeing him as what you said would be ruining him :P

Then it wont be Conan now would it? Hes pretty crude and loud if you have read the novels and comics. But by makeing him what you said it would not be true to the source material and would not be Conan.

What's the point of a remake if it's just going to be the same as last time. We're all familiar with L Sprague De Camp's character, the Boris Valejo paintings et al by now... but look at any superhero and you can see how they change over time. A good case in point if Batman never evolved or changed, we wouldn't have Frank Miller's Dark Knight revamp and yet that was wildly successful (there's a good example in particular of a character who started out as very clean and tidy, morphing into someone rather more scruffy and savage). Etc etc.

So does not mean it would work for Conan. 90% of movie remakes have ruined the main character of the films. the remake of nightmare on elm street bombed becouse they tryed to change freddy so did the friday the 13th one. I don't want to see that happen to Conan.

Most remakes that try to change the character of the main character useally bomb and ruin the character.
