Best MM pet for highest personal DPS?

Unread post by rach3l »

For 5 man content. I was wondering if the best DPS pet ability would be a "bleed dmg taken" debuff, or a debuff of the target's "physical damage taken". I realize the differences aren't going to be astronomical but I would like to min/max if possible.

Part of it depends on what buffs you have available to you. If you have a warrior or DK, using a cat will probably hurt your DPS because it's providing a buff you already have, know what I mean? Then you would want to bring a wolf for the +5% crit... unless there's a feral druid already bringing it. So many buff combinations!

I remember parking myself in front of a target dummy for a bit and found the pet that boosted my DPS the most was my cat. Note that this was in SV so MM may be different.

If all other buffs are covered, MM should go for a ravager, imo. They increase the physical damage taken by a target for 4%. They also look cool and are underrated. I think they're cute! :3

EDIT: You may want to take a look at these charts. They helped me out a lot.

It all really depends upon the specific dungeon, the make up of your group, and how your own talents are arranged. A Hyena for the bleed damage or a carrion bird for physical damage taken will probably end up being about the same, varying slightly depending upon your situation. For MM, pet choice isn't as essential as for BM -- just go with whichever pet you like best.

If that doesn't convince you, I'll refer you to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhvvNGeHHME

Just remember that if you go for +bleed pet, hyenas' debuff currently doesn't work on Bosses.

I use my Olm (Athena) when Im raiding. Idky but she made my dps go up compared to my cat and fox. (Plus my druid friend yells at me when I dont use her because "she's too dang nifty to keep hidden Boni") lol. Plus roar of recovery is great.

I myself go for a raptor or ravager for extra physical damage but-- if you want to raise your dps through bleed effects (like if you seem to be really lucky with that pierced armor debuff or whatever its called...) then a hyena or something else with same ability is good.

Also, ive been using my raptor for my dungeons and he's ferocity, he does really well and i out dps the tanks that are about half heroically geared and most other dps's lag behind in that, both for damage overall and dps average that do normals for the fact that they're a looot easier (ive heard, im not geared yet myself) and ive heard cunning pets have a higher multiplyer (?) and i plan on using my ravager (shares same debuff ability as raptor but a cunning pet) to run my dungeons and see how my dps looks.

Topics like these are kind of frustrating because there is no single best pet anymore. It all depends on your group make-up and what buffs/debuffs are missing that you can cover. I'd say a good line up to keep on hand would be Cat, Wolf, Raptor/Serpent, Ravager, Windserpent/Dragonhawk

Unless you really want the whole bleed increase thing, I'd take a boar over a hyena since, supposedly, the hyena debuff won't apply itself to bosses.

Bohic, all the pets do the same dps. It's all about group composition.

That's not true. Pets within the same class do the same dps. And yes, I understand group composition. I pull out the pet highest on the list whose buff isn't already present.

Actually Bohic, as of Cataclysm, ALL pets do the same base damage, which is then modified by talents and buffs.

And Jess, I already linked that vid. :P

More than one person linked it. :P

But yes, Tyger is right. ALL pets, regardless of tree, do the same base damage and it only changes based on talents/buffs/etc.

Sorry, I assumed that Petopians spec'd their pets. Yes, for those of you that don't choose pet talents, all pets do the same damage. For those of you looking to maximize dps like this thread's OP, Ferocity > Cunning > Tenacity.

Again, not true. :) My pets are all specced for DPS and I top charts regardless of which one on bring. (This is on bosses, mind you. I don't count trash.)

WarcraftHuntersUnion.com can give you the specs you need for dpsing pets, regardless of their tree.

I know this isn't a theorycrafting forum and I appreciate that, but this thread is asking for theorycraft on which pet provides the most personal dps for an MM hunter and I was happy to register to answer that question. I would also be happy to hear any valid criticism to what I posted.

Your response is not valid. While you might top charts in your guild no matter your pet choice (hell, maybe even without bringing a pet depending on how bad your guildies are), given the case where no other buffs are present, you will do consistently less dps with a bear pet than with a cat pet.

That is all. You don't seem to believe the actual facts already proven so theres a reliable source there to tell you instead. Good day.

There is no need to come in here and act like an elitist. All the answers you have been given are valid. There is no single best pet. If you want to go theorycraft and min/max to your heart's desire, EJ is that way ------->

Your reliable source clearly states that there are differences in dps provided by cunning VS ferocity VS tenacity and that hunters should be bringing the pet that supplies the best missing buff.

All I did was answer the OP's question. If any other answer than, "just pick any random pet because I say they all work the same," is elitist, then so be it.

But what we've been trying to say is "there isn't a best pet." There are recommended pets to have, such as cats because their agility buff is absolutely the best for hunters in PvE. It just comes down to group composition. And if you don't really care about min/maxing to the teeth, it really does not matter which pet you bring. The whole thing with Cata is that you can bring whichever pet YOU like best and still do good DPS.
