Leatherworking profitable?

Unread post by Bulletdance »

I have alchemy on my main so its easy to make money. I use leather working on my hunter and it may be that I just don't spend the time or effort on it needed, but it seems like its really hard to make a decent amount of gold with this profession and if one doesn't raid getting good patterns is really hard or impossible. Do you guys like leather working and how it earns you gold? I might just be prejudice because I like alchemy so much.

I found leatherworking more of a money sink actually. I make most of my gold out of my mage who's jewelcrafting/mining.

Not a huge moneymaker. I make more money off of selling light leather from skining and my lw is at 450. Maybe when new recipes come out in cataclysm it'll do better.

I've never made a profit leatherworking, except with the item enhancments. And that isn't much compared to what other professions can do. I only have it to make stuff for myself and even that isn't so great. I wonder why I keep it, honestly. I could make more gold with something else. I could be more useful with enchanting. Oh well.

I've never found leatherworking to be a hugely profitable profession, so if you're just looking for a money maker I'd consider switching to something else.

It can get profitable if you bother to take it all the way into ICC, the high-end craftables are valuable indeed. The moneycost involved in getting there is rather big, however.

If you use it as a Hunter, it's mostly a make your own armor profession. It only gets marginally profitable at high levels. On my server, I can sell Frosthide Leg Armor for 200g each, and they aren't too difficult to make as long as you do some dungeons here and there.

I always found that it was one of the easier professions to LEVEL (since you kill mobs as you level and can skin a lot of them). And the benefits for making your own armor as a rogue/hunter are great. But not a huge money-maker until you get to endgame content.

Like Dragonpuff mentioned, I can sell Leg Armor and some of the cloaks for decent amounts of money. The epic 450 stuff sells pretty decently too for people starting to gear up their chars for getting into instances. But yeah, overall, not a huge money maker.

Keep in mind though that a lot of the BIG money-makers are really hard to level to. My main is a JC, which was positively BRUTAL to level, but at endgame content once you've earned a few epic gem designs it's easy to pull in several hundred gold a day with only one or two sales.

My Hunter is Skinning/Leatherworking. It's not really hugely profitable from a "casual" standpoint. My husband can sell a Titansteel bar for roughly 100g every day and it's essentially guaranteed to sell. I think that it's probably easier to find that highlevel LW in your guild or just someone you've met online and have them make it for you that way.

In fact, my husband was shocked to discover that my LW is hovering around 445, instead of maxed at 450. I had to explain that the two items I could make at first cost frozen orbs, 12 Heavy borean leather, plush elemental aspects and the occasional arctic fur. I could dedicate play time to grinding/farming leather, but that takes a certain mindset from me and I prefer to actually play the game.

I know that because of skinning it's so easy for us to get the base material for our profession, but I think it's a little imbalanced at the moment. Six Borean Leathers to make one Heavy Borean versus finding ONE Titanium node and the *multiple* objects received therein? I have a friend who doesn't farm his mining and has STACKS of titanium. He's flying around, sees a node, TINKTINK, back on his way. It takes a lot more effort to gather up all that leather. And I haven't seen an arctic fur drop in WEEKS.

Ever since they made titanium more popular, I think...

Anyhoo, just my random observations.
