Random Pet Challenge [v3.0]

Yeah, they're sort of race specific for me. I would like them on more characters, probably, if they didn't have such a "meh" special. I'm really not a fan of Lock Jaw.

Don't worry Tyger I feel the same way as well. I really can only see them with humans and worgen (because it's always funny to see a person-wolf with a dog as a pet haha). And since I begged Blizzard to change Kari back into a draenei after not being happy with her as a worgen....yeah...

I went to the draenei starting area and picked one up.




I ended up naming her Dazzle. Why? I'm not really sure but it really seemed to fit lol. What I really love about Dazzle is how she has sparkley/poofy stuff coming off of her all the time. It makes her seem more moth like to me. It makes it easier for me to imagine that she's velvety like a real life moth. I can't comment too much on her textures and stuff. I run WoW on a crappy laptop so all my settings are turned down as low as possible.


Dazzle's combat animations leave a lot to be desired, imo. She only has one action from what I saw and she just sorta smacked the mob. Her special ability is also useless on non-caster mobs, since it's an interrupt. It'd be a pet I'd bring if all the other buffs were covered, I guess. Other than that, I have other pets I use for dungeons.



I have to say... None of that is going to prevent me from keeping Dazzle with me. I think we look so good together! The first emote she did was landing on my head and I just had to go "D'awww..." and knew she was going to stay.


I also absolutely love her coloring. The blue and pink go SO well together. I especially love how to colors blend together towards the edges of the wings, making it look more natural. And look! She has a horn like a unicorn! Come on! How awesome is that?? She also looks really huggable. Like her mothy-ness makes her fuzzy and I could snuggle with her, even if she is a bug. I also like that her mandibles/mouth parts aren't scary looking, lol. They move around a lot on my wasp and it creeps me out a bit. On Dazzle, they don't move much and, if they do, I don't notice it so it's not distracting.

So anyway, I really like Dazzle. I think I'll use her as a PvP pet mostly but I love just running around with her and watching her fly around.

Yeah, I think a lot of people misread the "Rares I Have" section. You don't need to list every rare in your stable, just the ones that are really hard to get and would otherwise be excluded.

If you really want to include the others, you can do like others and list them as "Honorable Mentions."

Well, my game time ran out Friday. The previous day, someone offered to buy me three months of WoW time, enough to tide me over until the quarter ends and I can start working for the summer. So, I'm unable to play, but only temporarily. If you don't mind, I'd really like to delay that report on the brown rhino, so that I can do a more thorough job.

I was given the black raptor:D

I decided to start this thing out right, so I went took a while finding Takk the Leaper!


Note: This guy can JUMP lol, he jumped from the top of the cliff to the bottom a couple of times while I was chasing him down.

Anyway, I've always liked raptors. A green raptor was my favorite pet for many many levels, so I knew that I had to do this review right, in Jadetalon's honor. /cry I kept his name Takk, simply because I knew I wasn't going to be keeping him, and I didn't want him to lose his sense of identity.


These guys are really neat looking. They look fierce and aggressive, and let me assure you that they are both of these things, while also having a glimmer of intelligence in their eyes. Add the intriguing feathers and beads tied to their bodies, and you have a very nice, interesting looking creature model.

The only animation that I found lacking on this pet was the swim. It is a duplicate of the devilsaur swim, minus the arms being used. Since the devilsaur's arms are so tiny and otherwise useless, I figured that it would be the other way around, with the raptors using their large, powerful arms to assist in their swimming, but I guess not. Also, there is no special idle animation to speak of. The raptor always seems to be swaying, opening and closing its mouth, and clicking its large claws against the ground.


What the raptors lack in idle and swim animations, they more than make up for in the battle animations. They have a simple bit attack, pretty standard for most pets, and they also have a flying kick attack that is very...animated, I suppose (Fig. 1). Their claw ability's animation uses the standard bite animation for some reason, but creates a claw effect on the target (Fig. 2). Their special is called tear armor, and it reduces the target's armor by 4% for 30 seconds, stacking up to 3 times. This really helps the dps, trust me. When used, it creates a blood splash effect (Fig. 3). Something I remember from when I used to use these guys as my main pet was that they were BEASTS on the dps chart (Fig.4). This guy is level 82. Now when I look back at that picture, I realized that he was on a level 60 training dummy (opps!) so that accounts for the DPS, but when I put him on a lvl. 85 dummy, he was hitting around 800 dps, which is still respectable for being 3 levels lower.


All in all, raptors are very nice pets, especially for lower level characters. Their ability to sunder armor and their high DPS allows them to hold aggro very well for ferocity pets. Combine this with the fact that they are such a nice looking pet and you have a candidate for one of the best non-exotic DPS pets out there. Sadly, I'm working on getting all unique-rare pets, so I will be releasing Takk back into the wild, right when I found him, and hopefully some other lucky hunter will come along and give him a new home where he can really put his unique talents to use!

Anyway, the raptors work the same despite a slight pigmentation difference, so just pretend I did the other lol.

So Faron told me that I should be less grumpy and moody. Rather ironic coming from him, but whatever. After asking him for a suggestion of what to do, he told me to go tame a random pet, perhaps one I would have never considered before. Not feeling like thinking about it, I let him pick for me.

And so, off to Wetlands I set off to go track down a green raptor. I will admit that I wasn't expecting much, never really having encountered raptors much before. The raptor surprised me--he held a beauty and nobility that I had never considered before.


I named him Savage--there is a fierce look in his eye, and he looks as if he is constantly ready for battle. He makes an excellent traveling companion as well. Savage is larger than I, and between his looks and intelligence, he keeps people on their toes when we approach. I think I'll let him stay around a while until he decides that he's done with me.

Looks:

I was actually expecting the green to clash with Rose, but instead it actually provides a nice contrast (top left). One of my favorite features on this raptor is his smallish eyes because they actually give the impression that he's looking forward, as a predator should (top middle). The green model is lacking much of the jewelry of the other skins; this is neither here nor there for me, although part of me kind of thinks he's a little bland (top right). This skin also has the weird stripes that stretch out funnily over the shoulders (bottom left). Overall, I've always been pretty impressed with the raptors, I love how fierce they look and how they resemble their real life counterparts, especially in the face. Their teeth look as if they're painted on or something, and as they open the top of their head caves in (bottom right).

Animations, Sounds, and Combat:

Raptors don't have much in the way of an idle animation--not a specific one anyway--they shift their weight, twitch their tail and claws, and open and close their jaws. Their sounds are, well, raptory--they screech and roar in combat--loud buggers, but it makes sense. Their run is very smooth and loping and very much resembles the way they would have run in real life (top left). Their swim is pleasant as well; their arms don't do much, but they kick with their hind legs (top right).

For combat, these guys only have two animations--a bite and a jump kick. I managed to, by chance, nab shots of the varying positions the raptor takes during their jump kick which I found interesting, most notably in the highest point of their jump and how their legs fold up so that they almost look like they disappear (bottom right).

The raptor special is Tear Armor, which reduces the enemy's armor by 4%, stacking 3 times. It is a fabulous debuff to have around if the cat and wolf buffs are already covered. This debuff only affects autoshot, Steady Shot, and Kill Shot, but will help out any melee you have in your group. I suppose they could make a decent PvP pet if you didn't need a CC pet.

Overall, I rather like the way Savage looks with Rose, although he doesn't quite look corrupted or anything, which is her usual theme. I plan to keep him around until I find an Outlands raptor skin I like for Rose. I'm even thinking of corrupting Savage into the green Outlands raptor.
