I want this dog for back up

The K9 is Brutus, a military K9 at McChord.. He's huge - part Boxer and part British Bull Mastiff and tops the scales at 200 lbs. His handler took the picture.Brutus is running toward me because he knows I have some Milk Bone treats, so he's slobbering away! I had to duck around a tree just before he got to me in case he couldn't stop, but he did. Brutus won the Congressional Medal of Honor last year from his tour in Iraq . His handler and four other soldiers were taken hostage by insurgents. Brutus and his handler communicate by sign language and he gave Brutus the signal that meant 'go away but come back and find me'.

The Iraqis paid no attention to Brutus. He came back later and quietly tore the throat out of one guard at one door and another guard at another door. He then jumped against one of the doors repeatedly (the guys were being held
in an old warehouse) until it opened. He went in and untied his handler and they all escaped. He's the first K9 to receive this honor. If he knows you're ok, he's a big old lug and wants to sit in your lap.Enjoys the company of cats..

That dog is beautiful, like the others said. Brave and loyal. He seems like a very, very good dog.

I hate to say this, but this is a (rather obvious) hoax.

I'm absolutely certain that that's a Belgian Malinois, and in addition, K-9s are not trained to "rip out throats."

Neither Bullmastiffs nor Boxers regularly reach 200 lbs, and if they did they wouldn't make good working dogs.

I did some digging, and here's more info:

Hoax Link.

Yes I thought he looked like one too. And while I am bummed and now agree this is a hoax you have one fact wrong. Some MWDs in Afganistan and war zones ARE trained to ..well not rip out throats but crush the windpipe. While police dogs are trained to detain catch and arrest, MWDs are in a war zone and sometimes when it comes down to it you need a guy dead or you die.
...still bummed its a hoax

In my time working with attack/protection dogs, I have never heard of anyone in modern times training dogs to do more damage than an arm-hold.

Edit--and even the shallowest googling is saying the same thing. I don't know who told you that military dogs are being trained to "crush windpipes" but I think they're pulling your leg at best.

Ex: "Evans says that at no time have dogs been trained to kill in the police or military. “Security dogs trained by the military are taught to grab and hold, as are police dogs. The purpose is to restrain the offender so that they may be apprehended"

(If it makes anyone feel any better, the dog in the picture is an actual police K-9, which pretty much automatically makes him a hero anyway ;)
I met Spike's handler/companion Scott. According to him, these dogs are trained by and live at home with their officer/handler and his or her family. After a demanding tour of duty, usually between 5 – 9 years they usually find themselves taking it easy, slouched on a couch, watching TV. I was able to get close to Spike and not knowing the Belgian Malinois breed I asked Scott about his bloodline. That's why I remembered this particular dog. He was very relaxed at the time, probably in his waning years as a cop and looking forward to a nap. And that, my friends, is not an urban myth!

Wonderful story and very cool dog! But I can help but giggle at the comment:

"Enjoys the company of cats.." for some reason I think to myself he'd add to that "but prefer them lightly salted":P
