Hellsing happens to be my absolute favourite manga and anime series of all time. :D Alucard's badass.

You know Veph, you've made me just realize something. I bought the entire Hellsing box set a long time ago, and forgot to watch it. O.O It's sitting in my giant pile of box sets/movies somewhere. I may have to watch that over my long holiday weekend in April.

But so far my favorite movie/series is Ghost in the Shell. Not because it's "Girl Power" or anything, but because I think Kusanagi is just awesome. :D

Back to the OP's post.

Yes, I've had "nerdrage" moments. I'm not generally a dramatic person, but usually when I make up my mind I tend to get these feelings of justification and try to find things to support my point of view. After thoroughly entrenching myself into a mindset and witnessing some challenge to it, I'll find myself almost reflexively defending my point of view with a passion I hadn't probably expected to have for it and come off as dramatic. heh.

I get why you don't like avatar, but the real issue seems to lie in how you decided to judge it prior to actually seeing it. Most people believe "don't knock it till you've tried it" and won't listen to reason with someone with an opinion who hasn't experienced it yet. We actually honor experience over wisdom in this society, which aren't mutually exclusive but just correlated. Even so, you seem to have built a pretty firm platform against the movie, regardless of it being of just of /meh importance. Your friend decided to call you on your opinion, put you on the defensive and you thumped her. She'll get over it.

Its something I've been thinking about a lot lately, though not specifically about nerdrage. Can someone who feels completely justified about something feel unmistakeably right while truly being completely in the wrong? AND, if that person can feel justifiably right and still be wrong, can it be said that anyone who feels "justified" about anything isn't qualified to consider if its right or wrong? In a general example, a 2 year old can feel "justified" in doing a lot of crazy behaviors, but its a parents job to teach them right from wrong. In an extreme example, Hitler felt justified. I think the majority of people would disagree with him.

With the above understanding, if you were open minded to the good of the movie and accepted it enough to understand that you just don't like these kinds of movies, that would lead you to a truly /meh opinion. When you justify your not liking it, you essentially polarize yourself opposite to anyone who "loved" it and are going to find at least one point of contention with them. I personally end up doing this completely unconsciously and I rarely notice its happening till after I'm broadsiding someone with a "Oh yeah? Well, you suck more!" (paraphrased of course ^^).

Twilight on the other hand is a very unusual phenominon. At first glance, I want to despise all that it stands for based on the hype, the previews and the commentaries. HOWEVER, if you reverse the male and female characters, it then becomes a very different film indeed, with a different, but no less "meat" hungry audience... emo female vampires saving and seducing the shy teenaged boy next door... saving him from other female vampires.... sparkling when "exposed" topless in the sunlight... /snickers yep. It might not have the following of the population of gooey eyed teenie boppers and their "romance book" reading moms, but... dammit, there I go being all justified again...
I don't really feel like this is so much the "Post-Modern" era as much as its the "Pre-Zombie-Apocalpse" era. I consider myself more of a forward thinking guy and an era that just won't die is just as feasible as a coming era, where the dead come back.

Epicfail: I thought people were allowed to hate something/have opinions of things, without having to absolutely go and see it or experience it. I'm sorry but I just had no desire really to see Avatar. I never said I hated it. I dislike the movie because mostly it's Pochahontas in space, and if I wanted to watch a movie like that, I could go to youtube and watch all my kid classics or even one of the dr suess cartoons.

I hate Happy Feet, and I watched it, and tbh Avatar in the end made me think of that movie, and if I disliked that movie...

And I'm not saying I feel justified about it.

Anyways we've cleared it up and all that so that's all that really matters.

You've not read many vampire 'romance' books have you.

That's like the summary for a crapload of 'Vampire' and 'Vampire Romance' books I've read from order forms for bookclubs, scifi and others.

The sad thing was, the plot that Twilight reminds me of, stars a female character who evidently slept with a vampire and a werewolf and is having a child and it's up in the air over who the father is and I just facepalmed so hard.

I haven't read the whole thread (sorry!) but I had to interject here:
VelkynKarma wrote:all the visuals tend to overwhelm you, and you don't even think about the story until you're out of the movie and realize, holy crap, all I did was watch Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves...alien style. How was THAT original?

I loved Avatar though. Way I figure, I wanted to be entertained, and Avatar delivered. :)

Also, as for this:
VelkynKarma wrote:As for the 'nerd rage/road rage' thing, I'd honestly say that's actually pretty common. Or at least, judging on the number of people that come to me for advice and tell a story of this sort. Usually people are just stressed, or stubborn, or being pushed too far, and that tension explodes in a totally different fashion--over something stupid, like movies or whose turn it is to do the dishes or whatever. What else do they call them? Kitchen-sink fights?
100% true. I've actually lost a couple of friends over time, because of stupid shit like this. Sometimes, people just talk past each other instead of to each other, and at that point you can't resolve any differences. Unfortunately, there are those that consider these types of fights deal-breakers for friendships... :(

I actually said:

I didn't say you weren't allowed to make opinions of things. I was simply pointing out how most people in society think to explain why you were getting resistance from others about your stance against Avatar. Well, if you really had to do something before you were allowed an opinion, no one could complain about the presidency until having been a president. No one could bad-mouth America until they've actually been there. No one could insult someone for their sexual orientation, race or gender without actually having been in their shoes...

Don't get me wrong. I make uninformed opinions like anyone else. I'm not convicting you here, but rather showing you I understand how you feel. I sense a familiarity with much of what you have written and how I thought when I was younger. I've learned to be a lot more open-minded, but that was only after I justified an opposing opinion to a great many things...

Oh, if you really feel you're right (about anything), there's a justification behind it, even if you can't put it into words. If you believe you are wrong (about anything) there's a conviction behind it, even if you'd rather not admit it. If you had an argument with your friend for any reason, its because you felt justified or... there's no fight in your words. Believe me, Ryai. Of all the people who post on this forum, you definitely have fight in your words. I happen to respect it, or I'd have just ignored your post. :)
