trying the free trial of Rift

Yeah I spent the last hour cluelessly looking through their soul trees, and Riftstalker looked like a better tank than anything available in the entire warrior class. Wasn't sure if they're given any decent AoE threat abilities though. I don't know if there's any limitations on those PvP souls, but 16 points in vindicator lets you block without using a shield, you still lose all of that armor though. =/

Eh, screw it, i'll just take the damn shield and see how I go. xD

I think i'll copy the game over to the other computers and con my family into playing the trial with me as well, lmao.

The PvP souls can only be unlocked by PvPing and earning honor and whatnot.

My rogue is currently set up as assassin/riftstalker and even though I'm DPS specced she can take a fair beating.

I'm on the free trial right now. I'm a bit put off by the fact that the level cap is 15, and that the "honor" cap (favor, is it called?) doesn't allow you to try out a PvP soul.

I've made a hunter who can blink (Riftstalker tree) and stealth. Basically I'm kiting in PvP, using the slowing shot, bleeding ("Quick") shot and casted shots from the Ranger tree (along with the worg pet), and using the fire "shot" and stealth from one of the rogue trees, Nightblade I think, along with the Riftstalker's blink when things get too close. In the Riftstalker tree, which I was intending to use to give me survivability, there's a talent to heal you when you kill someone with combo points left over, and talents in all three trees for stamina, damage and, in one or two cases, healing taken.

I have no idea if I'm "doing it right," but it's quite fun, although very similar to WoW's hunter in the way I've set it up (although the pet seems quite weak); but on a trial account, I was topping damage/kills in the Black Garden quite a lot, which was fun

If I had the cash I'd cancel WoW & play this instead, but the initial bit of money seems to be quite a chunk. I don't know what end-game is like here anyway, but it was still interesting to play with a bit

The UI is so identical to WoW's (both the setup & the default binds) that I didn't even have to learn it. It also feels much smoother than WoW's. The graphics are more realistic, more LotRO-ish, which I like; but the races are very limited & limiting, and I've run into quite a few graphical errors. I also have to play on "low" for a decent framerate, which is very odd considering my computer is quite good, and the three or four other people I've spoken to have said the same. I'm also an animal lover, and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a true beast tamer class, nor are there many mounts to choose from. I do, however, love the mechanical horses So steam punk.

To be fair, WoW's free trial caps at level 15 as well so one can't really complain much about that. As for the purchasing of the game itself, it's no different than WoW either, and if you think about a new player coming into WoW right now, it's like $10-20 for Classic, another ~$20 for TBC, and like ~$20-30 for WotLK, and then like ~$40-50 for Cata; that's a lot of money to just start a game, granted you can start off one expansion at a time just in case you don't like the game.

As for your rogue, I don't think Rift's "hunters" are as powerful as WoW's, I think the Ranger's used mostly for solo or something like that, I can't remember. I just remember my friend making fun of me for going ranged DPS on my rogue because they're not as strong in PvE or something.

Anyway, sounds like you were doing pretty good in PvP, which is something I haven't messed around with yet. I bet it's a nice break from WoW where everyone's just clad in BoA gear and nuking everything.

I ended up taking my rogue melee spec and totally fell in love with her. My man's going to turn his rogue into a Riftstalker tank. As for the end game, I don't know much about it other than my friend seems to do a lot of heroics and raiding as our guild is mostly focused on getting server firsts and stuff like that. I think it's a similar system to WoW in that you run normals, and then heroics, and then there's rift raids and instance raids. Beyond that, I don't really know anything.

Thanks--I made her, and LOVED her (she looks identical to my old EVE-Online char), and then my husband *ruined it* by saying "she looks like a goth Night Elf."

Yeah, I guess my EVE char looked like a massive goth as well They're not IDENTICAL, but one sure does remind me of the other. I probably could have gotten closer to the right skin tone, makeup color, etc, but hey, close enough

You might be able to log in on Rift's site and download the new free trial, I'm not sure.

If that doesn't work you'll probably have to make a new account.

Well I think I want a BM warrior as I recently started one on my own shard but shes only level 9.. I'm debating between Bahmi or Kelari and hopefully can use the name Jackal and if not Lakcaj - which is Jackcal backwards and I pronounce as La-Caj(Like a hard Ca as in Cause with a J added) If that makes sense..
