I was excited at first until I saw the part that he loses the aura when he dies. :'(.

There are several threads on this topic, the best being Griffley's and Acherontia's which both list the trick-taming methods and what can be trick-tamed. (I can also vouch for Spiteflayer, though his is also a damage buff: BEWARE. And of course good ol' Icehorn.) I highly recommend checking those as well.

For ease of searching however I'll try to explain as best I can here, too.

There are 2 ways to trick-tame something, but neither are 100% guarenteed.
The first is to have the target pet die/despawn right as you finish the tame with the help of serpent sting, immolation trap or a friend. This one is tricky to get the timing right but in a way feels more "legal" than the other. (Both of course are fully legal as long as you avoid damage buffs.)
The second (this is the method I use and is, in my opinion, easier to pull off) is to use the macro: /script PetAbandon() and spam it when the tame timer reaches roughly 2 seconds, and continue to spam until shortly after the target disappears.
There have been several ideas on how to increase your chances of success; such as having 2 free pet slots or (my preferred way) to tame another mob (or the same mob if its on a short respawn) normally and then immediately tame the target pet using the macro.
I also recommend doing everything possible to increase FPS and reduce lag, by turning down your graphics settings and turning addons off respectively. The smoother the game, the more chance of it working.

Both of these methods require you to log out for it to take effect. Until then you will still have what appears to be an empty pet slot. This is also how you find out whether or not it worked, as the pet you trick-tamed will be next to your character on the login screen if you succeeded.

I hope this has been helpful to you. Good luck and happy hunting :)
