Hi I was wondering what you guys use and if there is any reason behind it
I use Silver-Dragon but the reason is simple I did not know there was any thing else,
Both links can be found below If you do not have one of them I do recommend getting one they help when looking for rare pets and mobs

I use NPCscan mostly because it seems to be a popular one, plus it does everything I need it to. It hasn't failed me yet, and I'm used to it. I've never tried Silver-dragon.

I use NPCScan. It isn't just an automated targeting macro like SilverDragon, it can "spot" mobs from half the zone away.

I also exist on DeviantArt.

I don't use any of them. Not because I am against them -- not at all! But because I am too lazy to install them. I'd rather wander around like an idiot. *shrug*

I prefer SD. With NPCs, you have to delete the creature catche every time if you want it to work effectively, and I'd simply forget to do that. SD may not have the max range that NPCs has, but it still goes pretty far and I don't need to remember to do something separate every time I log on. It's nicer.

I use NPC Scan because a guildie said, "It'd be much easier to find Skoll if you used NPC Scan and the overlay." So I downloaded it and hav been using it. If Someone had said "It'd be much easier to find Skoll if you used Silver Dragon." I would have downloaded that. Honestly, it was the first addon of that type mentioned to me. I knew nothing of it before I started to use it.

NPCScan mainly because of the alert.

I've never used SilverDragon though. XD

I like SD because I dont have to clear the cache. I know it's supposed to be ok, but it makes me nervous and I always forgot to do it anyway.

Actually, you don't.
Silverdragon is "just" an automated targetting macro, no real configuration needed.

Clearing the cache isn't too difficult once you get used to it. :D

My boyfriend actually made me a batch file which deletes the folder for me automatically when I double click it. I have that right below my WoW icon so I always remember to hit it before I log in. It works sort of similar to a macro actually. You type out the raw commands in Notepad, then rename it to have .bat at the end. This transforms it from a text file into a tiny batch program that carries out the command you told it (like deleting the file you specify). I can type out a more detailed explanation here if anyone wants it. It's completely safe and simple, I'd just have to double check with my boyfriend since he knows what he's doing with that more than I do. ^_^

Alternately you could make a shortcut to the Cache folder onto your desktop so you remember.

rm "wowfolder/Cache" is the linux version.
The actual file would be dependant on where you installed your WoW, however.

Really? That batch thing sounds interesting. If I don't have to go digging through the files every time, I might actually gice NPCscan a try. XD
More detailed explanation please?

It's basically an incredibly small program you make yourself. Tell where your WoW folder is and Ill make ye' one. Just start it, it'll instantly remove the folder and turn itself off again. You can even make it play a fancy sound or something. :D

I actually use both along with yet a third whos name escapes me atm. I notice with silverdragon that I get messages even in towns such as "Gondria spotted in Orgrimar...definately a pet". At least I think that's SD doing it. All I know is that between the 3 I never clear my cache yet rares always sound off, evn ones I've downed. I also use NPC Overlay. It shows NPC paths on the maps...usuefull for tracking mobs along their routes.

My Wow is in the generic folder place for most computers. I didn't feel the need to fiddle with it. lol

Sorry about the delay! Here's how to make your own Batch File to easily delete the Cache.

Now, this particular one only deletes the Creature Cache file (that's the only one I was interested in as I was only going after rare pets). I'm also assuming you have Windows XP from your WoW folder pathway. The following won't work on Windows 7 since creating batch files is a bit more complicated. Luckily for you it'll be really easy though. ^^

Note: This is the generic pathway of the folder for Windows XP computers. Some people might have different paths, so double check.

  • 1) Create a new Notepad file/Text Document on your Desktop. Name it whatever you want to (eg. Delete Cache)
    2) Open the text document and copy the following lines in: (note that these are two lines, don't have them as one line)

    CD C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS
    del CREATURECACHE.WDB

    3) Save the text document. You should now have a text file called Delete Cache.
    4) Edit the name of the document and add .bat at the end (eg. Delete Cache.bat). The file will transform from a text document into a batch program.
    5) Double click on this and it will carry out the deletion of your Creature Cache file. :D Then you can just keep that on your Desktop or somewhere convenient and double click at your leisure.
Let me know if you have any questions. ^^
