EDITED: The List of "Buff" Pets No Longer Obtainable

I'm not sure if it is, though I'd always done it with Varethyn so I can't say (I'd attempt with another character but since it looks to have been fixed after all there doesn't seem to be much point).
I always had 3 pets with me to start, tamed a random mob (or the same mob in the case of lone hunter) normally, dismissed it, then tamed the target pet with the macro, spamming it from 2 seconds left on tame to shortly after the pet vanished and then relog. Even with the longer wait for lone hunter I had managed to nab him first time. Now every attempt is fail, as are the oiled wolves.

Frrghgx. I've spent an hour working on the dead/revive method and can't get it to work. Good thing I already have my oil wolf. I'll give the Petabandon another go, this time with all but one slot full. Why not, right? :p

Went out to Zul Drak on a whim after reading this thread.

hour of farming the bears with petabandon = no bear. Much sadness. I wanted a cool bear that wasn't a spirit beast, too. Why did they have to implement that?! Maybe they're keeping the appearance buffs without us having to do the fancy tame exploits? That would be amazing, but unlikely. Closest I got was literally the same as how I got all my other effect pets; tame ends, pet despawns RIGHT as tame ends. But, the thing LIED and said I didn't have a pet to summon. My ghost wolf with a sword begs to differ.

I'm thinking that it did "just" kick in, too. Pets tamed this way usually were auto-aggressive, and you could not directly edit their action bar.

The revive method works as of 6/17, just tamed another oily wolf as horde, it took about 10 tries but I got it.

....Ten tries? I spent a bloody HOUR out in Borean and still haven't managed to get oil bird. I've done all sorts of things, but they always die. There is no justice in this world.

...How'd you do it? A lot of haste, right?

I was level 77 with BoA gear, the wolf I just got lucky with timing, but the oil hawks always die within one serpent sting.

I wouldn't be surprised if all these methods are being removed one way or another. Some things do take months to actually be implemented (didn't 4.1 say the dark phoenix would be fixed, and its not until 4.2 for example).

The fact that it *does* seem like Blizzard is shooting down method after method of the "appearance buff" pets seems to suggest that Blizzard doesn't want us having those types of pets. That's just how I see it though.

Maybe one day I'll try for the fire pig, but overall none of the appearance buff pets really keep my attention XD

Confirmed that the tame/revive method still works, tamed a flaming boar today after about 40 min of attempts (had to get my timing right).

BUT, don't do what I stupidly did. I logged on my hunter in Org tonight to show my boyfriend and... my boar wasn't on fire. I ran around for like 3 minutes then figured something messed up and abandoned. I logged on my baby hunter on another realm who tamed the boar a long time ago. I had a heart attack because there was about 5s before the flame visual kicked in... then I realized it must have been friggin lag on my first hunter >_> Now I'm off to tame again.. xD

I accidentally pressed the abandon pet macro in a dungeon with my flaming boar, and had to tame a new one ( in two tries /flex )

Ya a week ago I was trying to get a Consumed Thistle Bear for a new hunter alt with the purplish glow using pet abandon. I thought I was just being unlucky and not getting it just right. Read this topic and tried again last night with using kill/revive (which is hard when you are a low level) but I managed to get my glowy purple bear after a good hour trying.

Gah! Does that mean we will never be able to tame using a method similiar to pet abandon (where the pets doesn't die)? Also tame/revive confirmed as working 6/18 But sadly not pet abandon. Hopefully someone can come up with a similar method to pet abandon.

Frankly, the macro version never sat well with me, seemed more like a out-of-game gimick. the death-revive method fits more into the game..

Plus, I feel " rewarded " when I can get something using the revive method, because it seems like a more natural way, rather than using a script.

How does the death-revive method work? Really intrigued. I'd like to get a couple of these pets, but not sure how ti works.

Yes as of right now the death revive method should still work, but only on oiled hawk/wolf, flaming boar, misty ghost carrion (sp) feeder, and possibly poison bear. It only works on these because the effect persists through death unlike princess (boar with ribbon) which disapppears on death

I remember getting an oil wolf just by timing the tame to end at the EXACT moment the wolf despawns, which took a lot of tries. (I mean, a lot. Around an hour.)

It was the same technique, more or less, that I used to get Garwal back in the day.

However, I too don't know what's involved with the 'kill-revive' thing. I'd kinda like to get a purple plaguebear but I'm not sure what the technique is.
