New Way to Tame a Low Lvl Appearance Buff Pet(Thistle Bear!)

Unread post by beccuh »

This is based off the kill/spam revive while taming method.
Long story short: My 1-shot traps were too much for these little bears to handle. I called in a low level friend for help...

Hi Petopia!

I'm not really the type that goes and posts on forums in their free time.. but I discovered this and thought it would be selfish not to share it with other hunters struggling with the same thing.

A couple weeks ago, I had my heart set on taming the Consumed Thistle Bear. HEART. SET. (Bears = favorite animal, purple = favorite color. You do the math.)
So, naturally I go and attempt this "pet abandon" macro everyone uses.. fully expecting it to work, since I had tamed the Lone Hunter a few months prior. I spent maybe.. 2 hours of abandoning diseased, non-buffed bears. :(

*EDIT* Is it really true this method is officially broken?

It was time for plan B. I did some research... saw on the Lone Hunter's Wowhead page that there is an alternate way of taming a buffed pet. You immediately spam revive pet the moment the taming cast ends while simultaneously killing it.
A difficult task to say the least, ESPECIALLY for an 85 attempting to slowly kill a level 17-18 beast. Yikes!

Heres what I did:

First I located a bear and distanced myself just far enough for tame beast to reach.
Second, I set an immolation trap at my feet, and shot an ice trap between us.. slightly closer to him than me.
Then I began my tame beast.

What I hoped would happen:

The bear begins running towards me as I tame, hits the ice trap, runs slower.. then when he finally reaches me, with 2-3 seconds left on the tame(and me spamming revive pet), he hits the immolation trap and it takes the rest of the 2 seconds left to kill him. Sounds like a pretty legit plan, right?

Heres what went wrong:

1. The bear would charge at me through the ice trap 75% of the time, not setting it off.
2. Even with no armor, no aspect, and a haste pot.. my tame beast still was not fast enough to finish before my trap 1 shot him. (Every 3 or so tries it might've taken 2 ticks if I was lucky.)

I tried EVERYTHING... different ranges, different timings, even dragging him through the water to slow him down. (Good luck getting a bear to perfectly position himself for you by the water at the right time...)

FINALLY, after 3 more hours of this method.. I decided to call it a night. Err.. morning. I stayed up nearly all night doing this! >_<

ALRIGHT! So today.. I was ready for plan C! (When I'm determined to get something... I don't give up!!)
Instead of doing more research, I thought hard about what other options I had. Then.. it hit me. DUH! If I one shot the thing as an 85... why not get a lowbie to help?! Genius!
So I summoned my guildie's alt(29 rogue) out there. We meant business. This bear was gonna be mine... or else.

-----------------

>>>HOW I SUCCEEDED<<<

1. I'm actually skeptical about this being necessary.. but it doesn't really HURT anything. I started with TWO empty stable slots, then tamed a bear like normal and dismissed it, leaving only 1 open slot with the new bear in the stable. Just like all the petabandon macro methods tell you to do. I did this just in case. :P Who knows, maybe it's a vital part of the process.. or just good luck.

2. Have your low level friend get the bear to below 10% health. He will need to be able to one-shot the bear when the time comes.

3. Once I saw the bear get low, I got as close as I could to the bear and went to start the tame. Getting close seemed to make stealing aggro easier. We had a lot of issues with the bear ignoring the tame while chasing the rogue in circles around me before finally reacting to my cast. I just kept spamming tame until I gained his attention.

4. Tell your friend to WATCH the cast ticking on the target. He will need to wait until the VERY last millisecond... practically just let the cast finish and as soon as that little tame beast tick is GONE.. that very MOMENT.. have your friend use his most powerful instant attack. You'll need to clarify that the tame needs to virtually finish and he will only have a split second to kill him for this to be successful. Our biggest problem here was killing him when the tick had a little less than 1 second left. The time we decided to basically let the cast go off when he attacked was the attempt that worked.

5. Spam revive pet during the final 2 seconds. I had been using a macro for revive pet intsead of the actual skill. I found this macro when researching the Lone Hunter Wowhead page:

/cast [nochanneling] Revive Pet

I'm guessing this ensures you don't interrupt your tame beast while spamming it. Another thing that always helps is giving the macro a key bind. Keys = easier to spam than mouse clicks IMO. For all you clickers out there. ;) ;)

6. If the bear disappears and you actually begin casting revive pet... CONGRATS! You just successfully tamed an appearance buffed pet in 4.2!! Go show and brag to all your friends! :D

One thing I should mention is towards the end of our mission to tame this bear, we had another 85 guildie come out to watch/help if needed. I didn't realize this when it happened, but the attempt that worked is one that he assisted on. This wasn't planned, but the 85 rogue had used tricks of trade to help get the aggro off the low lvl rogue, ultimatley killing the bear at just the right moment. Very, very lucky here. Although, I have faith in this working without a 2nd helper.

**NOTE**
Depending on the class of the low lvl helping you, this could take SEVERAL attempts.. so be patient! This is currently the only pet that has been proven to be able to tame this way, to my knowledge.

Happy bear hunting!

I think those pets have a damage dealing appearance buff; you may want to double check on that bear.

The bear is actually fine to tame, however, the revive method has been known for a while around here. ;)

yes, i knew the revive method has been around.. but i had never heard of anyone using a partner when the beast is too low level for it to work.

Hm, now I kinda feel silly for insisting I need a low level for this. Haha, I probably just spend too much time trying NOT to 1 shot him.. that all I could think about was DPSing him down slowly. At that point any kind of 1 shot meant failure to me! xD

but yes, TOUCHE. :)

Good to see it's still possible to obtain this bear - I've been paranoid about mine accidentally losing the aura!
