Terrible In-Game Tragedy
Here's the long story of how.
A couple of years ago, I was best friends with this guy from seattle, who went to boarding school with me, here in england. At the time I had spent two years on a warlock on EU servers, and He played US servers.
So, He begged me again and again to join US servers. Eventually, I gave in, but I told him I wasn't levelling another character from scratch. He agreed, and decided to give me his level 50 hunter, to play with, as he never used it.
I had to buy WoW, BC and Wrath, set up the account in his name, and pay for the character transfer. I made my peace with it, due to the fact I would be playing with my best friend.
Not long afterwards, He left school, and I never saw him again. I sent him emails, and called him a few times, but he never responded. Last year, he finally got in touch again. I was relieved, and we started playing again. I found out he had been doing drugs and had almost landed himself in jail, and that WoW was his way of staying away from all of it. So, I paid for a month when he was out of funds.
Then, He starts getting all full of himself, as he gets himself better gear, and gets into top guilds. I ignore it, but it just gets worse. It gets to the point where he has become arrogant, self centered and thoughtless. He was hurting his friends emotionally. So, I called him out on it a couple of weeks ago. Then he decides, because we aren't friends anymore apparently, and he doesn't like me anyway, that he wants his character back. You can imagine how I felt.
For obvious reasons, that totally shattered my relationship with him, and a mutual friend had a go at him for it. Can you guess what happened to their friendship? That's right. Just because he can't take anyone telling him anything remotely negative about himself.
So he's been trying to get my account back, and so I had to resort to doing something that left me depressed for two days. I turned my characters into skeletons. I sold all of their items, used all of my hunter's emblems for primordial saronite and crusader's orbs, and deleted everything else. The hardest part was releasing her pets. Why should he get everything I worked SO hard for?
Using the recruit a friend thing with my australian friend, I just made a new account, and moved everything over to her. So now I have a level 14 blood elf with 3.2k of gold.
I have to ask you, did I overreact? Did I do a bad thing? Surely if I worked so hard for the gear and items, I should be able to keep them? I mean I haven't deleted her, so he still gets the character.

That's a really tough situation to deal with. In all honesty, though, I support what you did in the end. I can't imagine how hard that must of been, but due to the fact that the hunter was technically from your friend's account, I could see nothing but trouble arising in the future.
I think you have a lot more freedom and security now that you truly have your own account. The gold will definitely give you a good foot hold to start with, and I think once you're over the initial shock it might feel good to start again and know that the character you make is absolutely yours.

Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
Honestly, giving up my hunter was the hardest thing i've ever had to do in-game. I felt so stupid for having red puffy eyes by the end of it.
And you know, I think you're right Vephriel. At least I have a good foothold with this new account, and triple experience means I should level to at least 60 in no time. I'm just starting to get over it now, I just needed t share my story, and get opinions from other people. My friends' opinions didn't reassure me much, as they will always side with me, and I wanted an unbiased opinion.
Still, that means Alyssia is no more. /tear

Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
Yes I have to say, you over reacted. The character is now Yours. He Gave you the character. It wasn't a loan, it was a GIFT and such things, as like Judge Judy says in court, aren't things to have repaid. Why do you think women get so mad when they realize they've been swindled by a younger hot man out of their money? They had never thought to mark down any money freely given to the man as a loan, and thus are screwed over by the law.I have to ask you, did I overreact? Did I do a bad thing? Surely if I worked so hard for the gear and items, I should be able to keep them? I mean I haven't deleted her, so he still gets the character.
He no longer had rights nor claim to your character or anything on your account. I mean you could even have contacted a GM yourself, and told him you were being harassed by a friend who had given you something and now since he's decided a life of drugs and crackcraft is more important than real life and people who care about him, he wants a gift he gave you back.
But seeing as you've already done the deed there's not much reason to keep it or the account, since a GM most likely can't give you back all the items you've sold away/deleted or restore them.
So I suggest not getting into contact with him because unfortunately, he's a drug using bastard and it's obvious what sort he is if he blatantly goes I don't do drugs when I play WoW. That's like saying Please, officer, don't send me to jail for doing crack, I have two kids I need to take care of!!!.
Cause I know a guy, he did drugs, booze, you name it, he did it, I mean HORSE TRANQS. And he Still played WoW.

All in all, I don't use the same server as him anymore (even though this is when BC was the latest expansion
Anyways, people act weird due to wow sometimes... It is just nature sometimes. The way I see it, Ryno was right. You did recieve him as a gift... Just change the account name, password, and all that. Switch servers and you could have been free. But still, things like this happen. Don't feel bad, you didn't really over react in my book

/HUGS
That is terrible. I can totally understand getting misty-eyed about a decision like that. Even if it's just a game, just a chunk of pixels, you get attached. They become people of their own. Letting them go is hard.
I realise you've made a fresh start already. I can see you're trying to think positively and move on, but if the character is as important to you as it sounds, I'd seriously consider sending a long e-mail/have a long chat with Blizzard support. Explain the situation, exactly what happened, and like others above this have stated, Blizz may rule on your side. If that happens, they could potentially restore for you, maybe not everything, but.... Something, you know?
Or, if you just want to stick with your new girl: I'm assuming you've stayed on the same server. Can you re-make Alyssia? Can you still get on the old account? It would hurt, but totally deleting the character would be a final goodbye, and let you truely start over, name and all.

Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
It's completely preferable to have your own account than one which was borrowed or gifted. It's against the TOS to sell or trade accounts or use another person's account, so you really wouldn't have much support for your cause if it came down to your ex-friend petitioning Blizz for the return of the account. Of course, Blizz likely wouldn't help him either since he also broke the TOS, but you never know. Thus it's best to have your own account.
It's always better to have something that is yours even if a borrowed version is better. The security is worth any other drawback.
Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
Um I think you need to re-read. She never received an entire account from the ex-friend. He gifted her with the hunter, nothing more, nothing less. That's what it seems the guy was basically trying to get back. A character. OP made the account herself basically, she bought the games/made the account.Anansi wrote:You did the right thing, and I would have gone a step further and deleted your character outright.

the ToS is for selling/gifting accounts, nothing against making one yourself- if I read OP's post right.

Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
The problem is that Nikkrosnil's account was set up under the guy's name. So technically that entire account was the friend's. That's why I think it better to start off fresh with an account that he can truly call his own and not worry about the issues that may arise.Ryai wrote: Um I think you need to re-read. Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
Um I think you need to realise that you cannot just give a character to a different account. Character=account. I can't make a character on my wife's account and transfer it to my account, for example.Ryai wrote: Um I think you need to re-read. She never received an entire account from the ex-friend. The entire account was given to Nik, not a character. He bought the game and the account was under the friend's name - essentially the friend had two accounts, one of which Nik was using. The paid character transfer would have been to another server, not another account.
Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
He DID give u that hunter so u dont need to give it back in a beter condition than u got him he should be thankfull u even got him to lvl 80. and even bought him a new account and paying subscription fees.
Now small tip. More likey he will come back asking for forgivness but
DONT go play wih him again. Chat / email ok but dont go play.
The chances of him doing something like that are really high
had same problem with a friend luckily on private Lineage 2 server which is free
Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
Tbh the only issue is with how the Character Transfer works- the account has to have the same name but the Ex-friend has no ties to it as it was only using his name to have the character transfer possible. But tbh that's just my opinion.Vephriel wrote:The problem is that Nikkrosnil's account was set up under the guy's name. So technically that entire account was the friend's. Re: Terrible In-Game Tragedy
So I agree that the safest thing to do was to set up your own account with no ties at all to the old account, or the old character. And hey, now you get to level a new hunter! I love doing that.
... although I would miss Mania if I lost her, I admit. But better to look forward than back.
