Did I overreact?

Unread post by tactfullyArtisan »

Alright. So this story involves four people; me, my best friend and longtime WoW player whom I will dub "N", a new WoW player whom I recently recruited who will be known as "R", and another person whom I have known for a long time and I will refer to as "C".
R is new to the game; he played computer games for a long while, but they were mostly FPSes and RPGs - this is his first big MMO. After much deliberating and checking out all the different race/class combos, he decided on a Draenei Hunter, much to my delight. So I start a little Shaman, and N decides to tag along with a friend of his, and they both make draenei as well. Once they're about level 12, C comes in and offers to run us all through Deadmines to level 20.
Now, C is notorious for being somewhat of a d-bag. There have been times when he's been perfectly nice and even bought me gifts for my birthday/Christmas. And there have been times when he is bent on pissing as many people as possible off. I figured this was one of the former, so we accepted quickly and were rushed off to Deadmines.
Once we get to the ship, I notice something white lying on the ground after C has made his way through the first patch of mobs. I realize it's the Brilliant Macaw, but too late, and give R a heads-up that it might pop up again. He is thrilled; he is already keen on pets and he doesn't even have a mount yet! I ask C if he could refrain from killing another if he sees it, to which he replies with an ominous "Well I don't really look at what I kill". I try to set my worries aside and we continue with the run.
Come our third run, we come back to Ironclad Cove and sure enough, Megawing is flapping around at the final spawn point. C aggros it, but doesn't kill it - he threatens to if R doesn't get there in time. R rushes over as I yell at C over the VOIP we use. R gets there, starts taming, and I start to relax -
But then the bird falls dead, and C gives a little giggle. I proceed to rage at him for killing it, stating that not only is it a rare spawn, but R was really excited about it and really wanted it. C replies with "It's not that big a deal, it's not that rare, whatever man jeez" and then we all fall silent for awhile.
I talk to N about it awhile afterwards, as he was in on the run, and he said that I might have overreacted a bit, but also that C was wrong to kill it.

TL;DR Being run through a dungeon, runner kills a rarespawn that new WoW player wants to tame, cue intense rage from me.

Was I wrong to rage, or did he deserve to be yelled at?

Just to clarify, the Brilliant Macaw and Albino Eyegouger are not true rare spawns because they don't have silver dragons on their portraits, they just have a low chance to appear in the instance; it's really weird.

However, the dude was a jerk for killing the bird that the other hunter wanted really badly, especially after saying that he would only hold it if the other person got their fast enough. It's level like 14--it's not like the high level couldn't just avoid it. -_- Personally, I probably would have reacted the same as you.

Where he in my guild I would have kicked the person.

There is no need to play with people who deliberately grief you or others. They are NOT worth the time.

If they are a friend in real life I would have a serious talk with them. If it is someone you just know in game, I would highly suggest not accepting any offers from them for any more "assistance".

Yeah, I know it's not truly a rare spawn, but "rare spawn" is easier to say than "Mob that has a low low chance to spawn instead of the common ones".

And I have tried to talk to him about it, but he's a very bipolar person. He really is alright sometimes, but he can just be a huge asshat when the mood strikes him. I don't want to give him up as a friend completely, I just really wish he'd listen.

I took my hunter and solo'ed that place a good 80 times before the blue and white one finally friggin showed up.

I only saw the albino one twice in all of those runs. So I can feel your pain.

I'd be upset too, it may not be a true "rarespawn" but your friend wanted it and he could have easily avoided killing it. He was griefing a friend of yours for no good reason and that's just uncalled for. You did not overreact at all as most people probably would have kicked the guy out of their guild for being a jerk.

I don't think you overreacted, but then that's me, and I probably would have done the same thing were I in that situation, so not sure if that makes my opinion valid >.>

My best friend is manic bipolar and she wouldn't do something like that.

Bah. Just don't accept offers of help if you know there is a chance you might find something one of the others want then. Just tell him that you guys want to do it on your own so you get more exp or something-which is true, if you run with someone who is so high they get no exp from the kills, it lowers the exp gains from the mobs for the lowbies in the group.

Either way good luck. :)

Well C is adamant that he was "just joking", but he went back to Deadmines after we got level 20 and went back to Stormwind, and lo and behold he runs down to the Cove and there are not one but two Brilliant Macaws down there. He summons R and me, on my baby hunter, and we both get to tame one, so he sort of redeemed himself by doing that. I'm still a bit pissed at him, but it's not as bad as before.

Lol if you're on the server Moon Guard like your status thing says I have a level 70ish Alliance pally who can solo most instances if you need a run through a low level dungeon and need someone who won't KO pets.

Great! At least he redeemed himself. And he was lucky he found them first run, they are tricky little blighters.

The rage sounds reasonable to me, rare or not he wanted to tame it. I've helped people tame pets long before I ever played a hunter...

Just wanted to pop in to say that I read this, and I think that the issue is nothing to do with the spawn, hunter, WoW or anything, but the fact that someone you think's your friend is willing to hurt your feelings and brush it off for his own amusement. It's hard to quantify the "did I overreact" by the WoW situation--your feelings would be hurt whether it was a WoW pet or something irl, and it's his actions that bothered you, not the gaming aspect, imo.

The fact that he tried to make it better rectifies it quite a bit, though :)

C sounds exactly like someone I used to know. Where you went wrong was expecting him to do the nice thing, as you already knew he has issues. Raging at him only encourages, as he thrives on negative attention. Either refuse to group with him or ignore the negative behavior when you do.
