Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I generally stand there for a moment or two while expressing my excitement to friends and guildies. I don't think there's really any harm in that. If someone else is looking for the rare and is in range, odds are that their scanner went off at the same time mine did before the tame and they'll have to clear their cache anyway.
When I come across another hunter taming or having just tamed a rare, I cheer at 'em.
Now on the flip side, I've encountered something like a half dozen hunters who seem to find a lot of joy in naming their pets the same as the original rare. They'll then go to every spawn point for that rare and pulling it out just so that they can screw up the scanners of other hunters. This seems to mostly happen with Skarr/Karkin on my server.
I think the new challenge pets are a great idea, but they do seem to have brought out the worst in some hunters.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I just want to point out that this isn't always what you think. I am a hunter that often names my rare pets with the same name they had before the tame. It's not to harass other hunters. I do it because that is the creature's name. A hunter's pet is supposed to be that hunter's companion, not it's property and not it's servant. The word "pet" doesn't really match with this way of thinking, but I do believe that was the original design intent with the hunter's pet.Boven wrote: Now on the flip side, I've encountered something like a half dozen hunters who seem to find a lot of joy in naming their pets the same as the original rare. I don't rename my party members when we do an instance together, why should my pet have to choose a new name simply because he decided the travel with me and share in my adventures?
Some pets get new names. Usually when I can't rename it with the same name, like when there is an apostrophe in the original. I don't do this to be malicious, it's just something that I like to do.
Also, I never used NPC Scan. I use simple targeting macros to locate rares that I camp. People renaming Skarr as Skarr screws up my macro targeting as well, though it's never been a big enough deal to matter. Just a moment of misplaced excitement is the worst that has ever happened.

And that's how you feel about it. Personally I feel an original name is just as fun. It makes more sense to me especially if it's like Loque. How many mates of Harkoa can there BE? But hey. It's all y'know, opinion.
Also, jerks ruin it for everyone is the ultimate moral.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
Yes, that's all I meant. I didn't mean to imply that it was wrong to rename a pet or anything. That's the most fun really, to give your pet an original name. I just don't usually do it for rares (for my own silly reason), and wanted to point out that not everyone that does that is being a jerk is all.Novikova wrote:And that's how you feel about it. And to answer your question, there is only ONE mate of Harkoa, he just happens to travel with me! Seriously though, that's one of the pets that I gave an original name to. Without the apostrophe, it just wouldn't look right.

My issue isn't with renaming. The second sentence you quoted is the main complaint. In conjunction with giving the pet it's pre-tame name, it becomes a bit more annoying.
I should very much hope you're not going to each Skarr/Karkin spawn point and getting out your Skarr, dismissing him, then getting out Karkin and repeating that behavior.

I sincerely doubt he is. There are people who just like the original names. But I think my point stands: Jerks ruin it for everyone.

This is pretty much what I do also. Once the excitement has died down, I immediately Hearth back to home turf, and then figure out a name and talent spec for the new addition to the family. Since I enjoy rare cats and spirit beasts in particular, this ritual will also include a trip to the town's Target Dummy area, in order to clear their default, active, Prowl ability (why, oh why, can't you simply right-click this away!).Boven wrote:I generally stand there for a moment or two while expressing my excitement to friends and guildies. Once the pet is named and specced up, I will generally keep him/her in my 'active pet' list, but I do not take that pet out in the zone where I tamed them, out of courtesy to the other NPCScan users out there.

Also, if you just tamed it, their NPCscan has just been set off anyway by it being there pre-tame! Unless they just showed up, anyway.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I'm not sure what the big deal is about tiptoeing around people and keeping a different pet per zone.
Most of these rarespawns are in a remote enough location that will not trigger a cache assuming everyone else is in the zone of general traffic. Even Deth'tilac, which is fairly close to the entrance of the Front, is far enough away not to trigger until you go up the ramp. Maybe not Solix and Ban'thalos, though I really don't see anyone running around with either of those.
If you are just standing at the entrance and eagle-eyeing the spawn points and someone pops out of the portal with a Molten Front pet, then you are not camping and have no real right to feel irritated. On the other hand, if you are camping in front of a Skarr/Karkin spawnpoint and someone runs by with a Skarr pet named Skarr giving you an NPCscan heartattack, then sure you might feel irritated. For the most part, people who have Skarr don't really want to camp it again, so while griefers will grief, in the 8 hours or so I was camping him I didn't see a single Skarr trip my scanner. When I did tame him ofc all the pet Skarrs popped out of the hunters lying in wait
Being a pvp zone on a pvp server though, I haven't relied on NPCscan to alert me to a spawn since 4.2 except for Ban'thalos (because it was going on 7am with 2 hours of sleep and I was starting to feel my brain melting).

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I agree with Fafnir about the tip toeing part. In my own personal stable I have so many rares that I use that I am going to be caching up some hunters npcscan on a daily basis without meaning to.
Now I'm not going to go wiggle around in front of someone I see camping with a pet from the area, but it's just something that needs to be taken with a grain of salt and not be so upset about.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
Put it away - immediately. Then I log out, power off my PC, and unplug it - just for good measure.
After that, I usually wait at least a couple days or so before venturing back on, and if someone asks me "hey didn't you have a purple spider with you a couple days ago?", I just /shrug, /distract, then /run before they can sound the alarm.
Can't be too safe.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I usually stand there for a couple minutes, generally because my hands will still be shaking and I'll be taking screenshots and going "OH MY GOD I GOT IT!" I don't do it to be a jerk; I'm usually just in too much shock to take off right away.
Plus I figure if I'm looking for a pet, I'd rather see the person who just got it, even if it means clearing my cache, because at least I'll know when to come back.
However, I don't stay on spawn points while I spec/name my pet, because that would just be a little bit excessive. I go back to Org to do all that.

this, this is full of win! it has made my day LOLWorba wrote:Put it away - immediately. Then I log out, power off my PC, and unplug it - just for good measure.

But in to the OP: I normally put my pet away after unless i have guildies there /cheering but when they are done i dismiss ( only about 30sec after tame then dimiss) Then i hearth pull my new pet out name them, spec them, the whole nine yard. On the tip toeing- i dont go out of my way to do it but i try to avoid it. What is making it bad with this patch is, we got all these new rares but they are clumped into 2 zones, and the tip toeing not to set off alarms can get old. I mean i have no problem with people who are questing, doing dailies farming what not with rares from that zone just dont coem into their spawn point xD
everyone is gonna have their own opinion, and jerks will be jerks,

Sig by Kurenio!

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I stand there briefly going "derp did dat jus happinz?" before mounting up and flying off (or in Kirix's case, running towards the portal to go byebye).
As far as naming the pet after itself (which I hate anyway); the reason it messes others up would be the target macro. Named your Skarr "Skarr"? /tar Skarr would get your pet targeted, and would disappoint the targeter. Setting of scans purposely is one thing, but disrupting targeting macros on top of that (purposely) is really low.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
I dance, cheer, and then take a few screen shots. I get too excited to worry about what other players are doing. Its not that I am trying to be rude, but usually I have spent lots of time dreaming about the pet to just dismiss him/her and fly away. I would expect any other excited hunter to linger around for tiny a bit as the initial shock wears off.
However one hunter I encountered purposely hide himself and left his pet out in the open to set off alarms. And then did a "/no" to the me and another hunter that got close. That I don't do, and I frown upon it.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
well sins im pretty much worn out when it comes to camping new shineis, i dont prance around showing/telling people i got that and that. no current rares exites me atm.
If its a low pop zone i may stand there for a min or two, specing the pet and then send it to kill something. then do a little sircle to get the "feel" of it. if it doesnt ding then im either gonna put it in the stable and never use it or i release it.
OR i do a couple bgs with it...
If im in a high pop area like firelands, i tame. mount up, run, get to safe zone, wonder what to do next.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
What I do, immediatly after taming, is announce in general chat ''X tamed at X:XX AM/PM'', then after that I mount and get away from the place. If I had quests to do there IF it was a pet I REALLY REALLY wanted (Like Deth'tilac, Terrorpene or Loquenahak) I will use it, if it was only for collection (Like the other spirit beasts), I dismiss it and take out my other pet.

Re: Etiquette Question: Freshly-Tamed Rare
Depends on the situation. Generally, my tames are not of rares, or if they are, they aren't often the endgame rares that EVERYONE WANTS RIGHT NOW OMGOMGOMG, so it usually doesn't matter for me. On the occasions that this was not the case, I tend to hang around with the pet out, both bonding and giving the opposite faction an idea of the spawn timer; same-faction players can just ask.
